Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project Manhigh took humans to the threshold of space using balloons. In the 1950s, a small band of Air Force doctors were on the cutting edge of the United States' space research programs. Working at the Aeromedical Field Laboratory at Holloman Air Force Base in southern New Mexico, they used balloons to carry laboratory animals followed by human pilots above 99% of the atmosphere. Drawing upon flight reports and technical data, this book documents Project Manhigh and the high altitude flights that preceded it. The Manhigh flights were, in many ways, prototypes for future space missions. On each of the three flights, the Air Force placed a lone pilot in a sealed capsule nineteen miles above the ground. At such extreme altitudes, the pilots were well within the functional equivalent of outer space and needed the sealed capsule to survive. Manhigh existed prior to the creation of NASA and helped pave the way for human space exploration.

Book No Dream Is Too High

Download or read book No Dream Is Too High written by Buzz Aldrin and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beloved American hero and astronaut Buzz Aldrin reflects on the wisdom, guiding principles, and irreverent anecdotes he's gathered—both in outer space and on earth—through his event-filled life, in this inspiring guide-to-life for the next generation. Everywhere he goes, crowds gather to meet Buzz Aldrin. He is a world-class hero, a larger-than-life figurehead, best known of a generation of astronauts whose achievements surged in just a few years from first man in space to first men on the moon. Now he pauses to reflect and share what he has learned, from the vantage point not only of outer space but also of time: still a non-stop traveler and impassioned advocate for space exploration, Aldrin will be 86 in 2016. No Dream Is Too High whittles down Buzz Aldrin's event-filled life into a short list of principles he values, each illustrated by fascinating anecdotes and memories, such as: · Second comes right after first. NASA protocol should have meant he was first on the moon, but rules changed just before the mission. How he learned to be proud of being the second man on the moon. · Look for opportunities, not obstacles. Buzz was rejected the first time he applied to be an astronaut. Failure is an opportunity to learn to do better. · Always maintain your spirit of adventure. For his 80th birthday, Buzz went diving in the Galapagos and hitched a ride on a whale shark. He stays fit, energetic, and fascinated with life. No Dream Is Too High is a beautiful memento, a thought-provoking set of ideas, and a new opportunity for Buzz Aldrin to connect with the masses of people who recognize his unique place in human history.

Book Man of High Empire

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roy K. Gibson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2020
  • ISBN : 0199948194
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Man of High Empire written by Roy K. Gibson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pliny the Younger (c. 60-112 C.E.)--senator and consul in the Rome of emperors Domitian and Trajan, eyewitness to the eruption of Vesuvius in 79, and early 'persecutor' of Christians on the Black Sea--remains Rome's best documented private individual between Cicero and Augustine. No Roman writer, not even Vergil, ties his identity to the regions of Italy more successfully than Pliny. His individuality can be captured by focusing on the range of locales in which he lived: from his hometown of Comum (Como) at the foot of the Italian Alps, down through the villa and farms he owned in Umbria, to the senate and courtrooms of Rome and the magnificent residence he owned on the coast near the capital. Organized geographically, Man of High Empire is the first full-scale biography devoted solely to the Younger Pliny. Reserved, punctilious, occasionally patronizing, and perhaps inclined to overvalue his achievements, Pliny has seemed to some the ancient equivalent of Mr. Collins, the unctuous vicar of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Roy K. Gibson reveals a man more complex than this unfair comparison suggests. An innovating landowner in Umbria and a deeply generous benefactor in Comum, Pliny is also a consul who plays with words in Rome and dispenses summary justice in the provinces. A solicitous, if rather traditional, husband in northern Italy, Pliny is also a literary modernist in Rome, and--more surprisingly--a secret pessimist about Trajan, the 'best' of emperors. Pliny's life is a window on to the Empire at its zenith. The book concludes with an archaeological tour guide of the sites associated with Pliny.

Book The Man in the High Castle and Philosophy

Download or read book The Man in the High Castle and Philosophy written by Bruce Krajewski and published by Open Court Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man in the High Castle is an Amazon TV show, based on the Philip K. Dick novel, about an “alternate present” (beginning in the 1960s) in which Germany and Japan won World War II, with the former Western US occupied by Japan, the former Eastern US occupied by Nazi Germany, and a small “neutral zone” between them. A theme of the story is that in this alternative world there is eager speculation, fueled by the illicit newsreel, The Grasshopper Lies Heavy, about how the world would have been different if America had won the war. In The Man in the High Castle and Philosophy, twenty-two professional thinkers look at philosophical issues raised by this ongoing enterprise in “alternative history.” One question is whether it really made a profound difference that the Allies won the war, and exactly what differences in everyday life we may expect to arise from an apparent historical turning point. Could it be that some dramatic historical events have only superficial consequences, while some unnoticed occurrences lead to catastrophic results? Another topic is the quest for truth in a world of government misinformation, and how dissenting organizations can make headway.

Book excerpt: From the author of THE KING'S MINDSET and PEOPLE GAMES... Have you ever felt invisible, powerless, and/or unattractive as a man? Specifically, do you feel that women don't respond to you, like you're always the one chasing them and not the other way around? Or, do you feel that men lack respect for you, don't treat you seriously, and maybe even look down on you? The main reason why these things are happening is because your "value" is currently too low and that unfortunate fact has become all too obvious to those who interact with you. It doesn't have to be that way. Introducing THE HIGH VALUE MAN: PRINCIPLES OF POSITIVE MASCULINITY... You may think that you need to have good looks, a fancy car, a Rolex watch, and an envious bank account to be taken seriously by men and women. This couldn't be further from the truth. You might have even read somewhere that you should aspire to become an "alpha male" in order to gain the respect of men and women. While well-meaning, this social construct is thrown around somewhat recklessly in order to explain why some men are successful and some are unsuccessful in life, whatever those words mean. However, in The High Value Man, you will learn how to authentically and positively assert and manifest your natural masculinity and transcend the alpha/beta dichotomy. What's inside The High Value Man? The reasons why you do not need to subscribe to the alpha/beta construct. A six-step plan to help you transcend the alpha/beta dichotomy and become a high value man. The twelve behaviors that you must eliminate in order to become a high value man. Two guiding principles to help you always figure out how a high value man should behave. Five tools and exercises to help your implement and reinforce high value behaviors. What will you also learn in The High Value Man? The difference between assertiveness and aggressiveness. How to handle real-life situations like a high value man. What will you gain by reading The High Value Man? Women start to notice, chase, and obsess over you more. More confidence, self-respect, and swagger. A more authentic sense of self and healthy self-identity. And most of all, people will start treating you better! What are you waiting for? Book excerpt: ‘One of the greatest escape stories I’ve ever read’ Mail on Sunday An ordinary man’s extraordinary escape from Mao’s brutal labour camps Xu Hongci was an ordinary medical student when he was incarcerated under Mao’s regime and forced to spend years of his youth in China’s most brutal labour camps. Three times he tried to escape. And three times he failed. But, determined, he eventually broke free, travelling the length of China, across the Gobi desert, and into Mongolia. It was one of the greatest prison breaks of all time, during one of the worst totalitarian tragedies of the 20th Century. This is the extraordinary memoir of his unrelenting struggle to retain dignity, integrity and freedom; but also the untold story of what life was like for ordinary people trapped in the chaos of the Cultural Revolution.
