Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Men in a Motor Car When I decided to write this book I felt myself under a moral obligation, not only to my charming fellow-travellers, but also to all those persons (of all colours) with whom I came in contact who so kindly supplied us with valuable information in many cases not even mentioned in guide-books. My object is to tell the story of our trips simply and impartially, showing things precisely as we found them, in the h0pe that the reader will be charitable enough to pardon any error he may find. I regret that there is no romance connected with this story, but it has been my endeavour to make it as light reading as possible. Book The Motor Car Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Motor Car Classic Reprint written by Duncan McMillian and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Motor Car The object of the Author, in the pages that follow, has been to take a straight course through the typical modern motor car, beginning at the engine and finishing at the road wheels. The principles underlying the various parts of the car are explained and illustrated by means of simplified diagrams, these being followed by illustrations from drawings and photographs of the actual parts. All variations from main types have been excluded, and as to details no attempt has been made to include the latest in the motor car world. It is hoped by these means to make the elementary principles underlying the construction and working of the modern motor car clear to even the most unmechanical owner. Chapter I. Deals with some elementary ideas regard ing the power required to propel a car under varying conditions, and the descriptive work on the motor car proper begins in the next chapter. In order to follow out the scheme of proceeding straight through the car, the descriptions of engines which depart from ordinary poppet valve practice have been placed at the end of the book. This system has proved successful in the courses of popular lectures on the motor car given under the auspices of the Royal Automobile Club of South Africa and the South African College, and it has also been found that this simple descriptive course forms an excellent introduction to the more advanced course taken by the engineering students at the College. Book Roy D Chapin

Download or read book Roy D Chapin written by J. C. Long and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-20 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now back in print, this is the only biography devoted to the life and career of Roy D. Chapin—one of the foremost figures in the history of Detroit's independent automotive industry. "John Cuthbert Long's Roy D. Chapin is a thorough and detailed biography of a remarkable, but little-known Detroit automobile industry pioneer. Historians should include Roy Dikeman Chapin (February 23, 1880–February 16, 1936) in any listing of significant American auto industry pioneers, along with the Duryea brothers, Ransom E. Olds, Henry Leland, Henry Ford, William C. Durant, and the Dodge brothers. Outside the cloister of automotive historians, Roy Chapin is an unknown. This is in part because no company or car bore his name. Unlike many contemporary auto pioneers, Roy Chapin was a modest man who did not promote himself. Even Long's superb biography of Chapin is not well-known because it was privately printed in 1945 with a small press run. In reprinting this volume, Wayne State University Press is making an important contribution to automotive history." —From the introduction by Charles K. Hyde, Department of History, Wayne State University

Book The Book of the Automobile

Download or read book The Book of the Automobile written by Robert Thompson Sloss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Automobile: A Practical Volume Devoted to the History Construction, Use and Care of Motor Cars and to the Subject of Motoring in America How shall we explain this attitude? Let us be fair and point out that some of the automobilists themselves are, unfortunately, partially to blame. Some drivers of the automobile regard it in the light of a toy to furnish amusement in speeding and racing on the highway. So regarded, it is truly a nuisance, a menace to life, and no legitimate means of street locomotion. Further, nearly every man has his mind directed to many abuses which are continually advertised by the yellow journals to increase their circulation. He hears that a million aire has ordered a 120 H. P. Machine, costing to beat the record of another millionaire, and that fortunes are spent with impunity by the rich on these space-devouring monsters, just for the fun of speeding. He reads that Mr. So-and-so, when giving bail, tossed a hundred-dollar bill to some clerk, afterward forgetting to have the money refunded. All these and other highly colored and sensational stories, mostly untrue, influence his imagination, and when he is forced by a drunken or reckless automobilist to jump for his life, it is but natural that he should nurse hatred against the man. Book excerpt: Classic Speedsters: The Cars, The Times, and The Characters Who Drove Them chronicles the most significant vehicles ever to have traveled American roads and racetracks. Speedsters were the pizzazz cars of their era. Speedsters were owned by entertainers, captains of industry, the wealthy, and in some cases, the everyday guy or gal. They were often expensive, but always fast and sexy. Speedsters were America's first sports cars. Each chapter frames the birth and evolution of a company that produced a speedster model in its lineup and includes a biography of a famous owner of the period. This book traces the journey of the speedster concept across several time periods and among twelve automotive companies. It answers three fundamental questions:· Why were these cars so important and influential?· Why did so many prominent people own them?· What message do they have for modern design?

Book Packard Motor Car Company

Download or read book Packard Motor Car Company written by Evan P. Ide and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1899, the Packard Motor Car Company grew into one of America's finest automobile companies, producing cars that exemplified American quality and innovation. Packards were the cars of presidents, movie stars, and those with an appreciation for high quality. The company is known for producing a variety of automobiles, as well as marine engines for PT boats. The Packard represents the classic era of automobile manufacturing and remains one of the most sought-after collector cars. The Packard Motor Car Company was in existence from 1899 to 1957, but the golden era of Packard cars came to a close in the late 1930s. The images featured in this book represent the early years at the Warren, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan factories. The first Packard was built in 1899, and the company then went on to build the fifth car to climb Mount Washington and some of the finest record-setting racecars in the history of automobile racing. Packard Motor Car Company contains rare images from the Larz Anderson Auto Museum that were saved from the Packard factory and the personal collection of James Ward Packard when the company closed.
