The Dhāraṇīsaṃgraha collections have been present in South Asia, and especially in Nepal, for more than eight hundred years and served to supply protection, merit and auspiciousness for those who commissioned their compilation. Book Civilization of the Americas

Download or read book Civilization of the Americas written by Ethan Gomez and published by DTTV PUBLICATIONS. This book was released on with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction There is much more to Mesoamerica than the Aztec, Mayan, and Toltec civilizations. In fact, several different ancient Mesoamerican civilizations had their own gods and religious beliefs. These civilizations included the Olmec civilization, Zapotec civilization, Teotihuacan civilization, Maya civilization, Toltec civilization, and Aztec civilization. The Olmec civilization is the first known Mesoamerican civilization. The name Olmec comes from the Nahuatl word for rubber people, and they were pre-Columbian people living in what is now southern Mexico, in the modern-day states of Veracruz and Tabasco. The Olmecs are essential to history because they were the first Mesoamerican people to develop a writing system, use hieroglyphics, and construct significant stone monuments (such as pyramids). The calendar developed by the Olmecs was one of their most remarkable achievements. They based their calendar on 365 days divided into 18 months of 20 days each plus 5 extra days at the end of each year—so it was different from our current calendar! They also used zero as part of their number system, which is why we still use it today! The Zapotec civilization was in the Oaxaca Valley, Mexico. This Mesoamerican civilization was known for using the Mesoamerican writing system and art. The Zapotecs were one of the first civilizations in Mexico to develop a writing system. They used it to write on stone or pottery, but we don't know what their language sounded like because no one left any written records about them or their lives, so all that remains is physical evidence, like pottery with pictures and hieroglyphs carved into it. This type of evidence is called epigraphic because it's an inscription on something else (like a statue). The city of Teotihuacan was a center of trade and politics. It existed from about 300 BC until 600 AD when it was abandoned. The site has been a subject of archaeology since the 19th century; it is now an essential source of information on Mesoamerican civilization, among the most significant early cities in pre-Columbian America. The city is located just north of present-day Mexico City in the state (state = province/county) of Mexico, 65 km (40 miles) northeast of the Federal District (Mexico City). The name "Teotihuacan" means "place where men become gods," possibly an allusion to their belief that their rulers became divine after death. The Teotihuacanos were not only builders but also warriors; they fought with neighboring groups over territory and resources. Their most important military victory came in 378 AD against Xolalpan by capturing its ruler Cuauhtémoc and killing many Xolalpan warriors during battle. After this victory, they took over Xolalpan's lands, including Azcapotzalco, Colhuacan, and Tlaxcala areas, where they established their control over those regions along with other surrounding places like Cholula or Chichen Itza until finally falling into decline due to internal conflicts caused by constant wars between various ethnic groups within the Aztec Empire itself during its final years before being conquered by Spanish Conquistadors led by Hernán Cortés after they arrived at Cempoala Island (between Veracruz/Tamiahua province) in July 1519

Book The Quark of Language

Download or read book The Quark of Language written by Sidney J. Baker and published by Enhancement Books. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quark of Language is a remarkable collection of papers on the psychology of language and more general human communication by two seminal figures in the field: the great philologist Sidney J. Baker, and John Diamond, M.D., one of the world’s foremost holistic healers. Best known as the author of the classic The Australian Language, Baker also published many papers on language in leading international psychoanalytic and psychological journals between 1945 and 1955. Diamond contacted him in 1966 and with his encouragement Baker produced two more important papers, although battling severe illness. Appearing here in print for the first time, they include “The Quark of Language,” for which this collection is named, which traces the evolution of language back to a single primal sound. This paper is arguably one of the most important statements ever made about the origins of language. In addition this volume contains two of Baker’s most insightful papers from the 1950s, “The Theory of Silences” and “The Instinctual Origin of Language.” The collection is complemented with three of Diamond’s equally original essays, which were directly inspired by his friendship with Baker. Also included is a moving personal reminiscence of Baker by Dr. Diamond and a complete bibliography of all Baker’s published writings. Produced at the behest of Dr. Diamond, The Quark of Language is a powerful, long-overdue tribute to Baker and his work, and will be a revelation to anyone interested in the psychology of language.

Book News from the Empire

  • Author : Fernando del Paso
  • Publisher : Dalkey Archive Press
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 1564785335
  • Pages : 722 pages

Download or read book News from the Empire written by Fernando del Paso and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If there was not so much fiction in News from the Empire, it could be called a work of history. In fact, the focus of this broad work is history itself, as well as the many unrecorded lives and events that history has forgotten from this strange era in Mexico's early nationhood. Using Emperor Maximilian and his wife, Carlota, as a starting point, Fernando Del Paso both considers what Mexico is and the country's place in the larger narrative of world history. The book spans the palaces of Europe and the villages of Mexico, yet despite its broad focus News is a book rich in characters and details, a work that opens up this era of Mexican history to readers without specialized knowledge. Maximilian and Carlota are the focus of the book, and even if they are not explicitly on every page, they are always in the background somewhere, providing the humanizing contradictions that fill it. Del Paso draws a complicated picture of two naïve people placed in a situation they could not manage and a country they did not understand. This innocence is especially inexplicable in the case of Maximilian, who, as brother of Austria's Emperor Franz Josef, should have known something about ruling but is completely unable to govern.

Book That Spanish Woman

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank Wilson Kenyon
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1963
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book That Spanish Woman written by Frank Wilson Kenyon and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical novel concerns the provocative Empress Eugénie, a dark-haired Spanish beauty who captured the love of brilliant but fickle Louis Napoleon. How did a girl from a Spanish merchant family ever marry a monarch? Her mother, the Countess of Teba, was a cunning matchmaker. But she urged her daughter to be shy, reserved, and agree with everything Napoleon said. And because Eugénie was attracted to the short little man with the keen eyes and the quick mind, she obeyed. At first Napoleon considered her a ninny. Yet her natural wit and charm finally made him offer her marriage where once he had offered her only his bed. Eugénie's salon was soon filled with Europe's elite and among her intimates were Pauline Metternich, wife of the Austrian statesman; Prosper Mérimée, the writer, and Queen Victoria of England. Eugénie was gay and chic and invented the fantastic crinoline. Also kind and warm-hearted, she did her best to relieve les miserables of her realm. No one ever doubted her independence or daring. As a young woman, she blew smoke in the face of a lecherous old Duke. As Napoleon's wife she not only bore France a Prince Regent but proved herself an adept politician. And at eight she found climbing Mt. Vesuvius mere child's play.
