Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the winner of the 2015 Man Booker International Prize The latest novel from “the contemporary Hungarian master of the apocalypse” (Susan Sontag) Seiobo — a Japanese goddess — has a peach tree in her garden that blossoms once every three thousand years: its fruit brings immortality. In Seiobo There Below, we see her returning again and again to mortal realms, searching for a glimpse of perfection. Beauty, in Krasznahorkai’s new novel, reflects, however fleetingly, the sacred — even if we are mostly unable to bear it. Seiobo shows us an ancient Buddha being restored; Perugino managing his workshop; a Japanese Noh actor rehearsing; a fanatic of Baroque music lecturing a handful of old villagers; tourists intruding into the rituals of Japan’s most sacred shrine; a heron hunting.… Over these scenes and more — structured by the Fibonacci sequence — Seiobo hovers, watching it all.

In the late 1800s it was a hotel catering to travelers and businessmen; then it was converted into a rest home for the sick and infirm; and finally, it became a privately-owned care facility, providing a home for the physically and mentally challenged of six counties. It was often the last refuge for those suffering from alcoholism, drug addiction, and severe behavioral disorders. Long after the building closed its doors for the final time, many people claim that some of those residents never left. Now a magnet for paranormal investigators, it is said that the abandoned rooms and hallways of Malvern Manor are haunted by the restless spirits of those who once called it home. Does the spirit of a young hanging victim still linger upstairs, calling out for somebody to play with her? How can Rose, the haunted doll, move around inside her glass case without human intervention? Who is the aggressive shadow man that likes to attack visitors in the nursing wing? And what is the truth behind the malevolent entity that lurks on the second floor? Join author Richard Estep (TV's "Haunted Case Files") as he and his fellow paranormal investigators take up residence at Malvern Manor and embark on a search for answers.

A one-act play in which apologies must be made to Chekhov. A one-act play in which there is a blueprint, & that blueprint is ignored entirely. A one-act play in which a decision is made, but it is unclear by or for whom. A one-act play in which the wind has the smallest hands, no, even smaller than that. Over the course of 41 one-act plays--most of them starring the characters ME and YOU--Dalton Day investigates grief, love, anxiety, and loss in this stunning collection of dramatic poetry. "Ferlinghetti's 'wild surmises of the imagination' are on full display...throughout this collection...EXIT, PURSUED will appeal to those who enjoy absurd humor, those who find poetry in the everday irrational twists of language, and those waiting for the rebirth of Dada."--John Bradley, Rain Taxi

Book Before Lyricism

Download or read book Before Lyricism written by Helenē Vakalo and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Lyricism includes six book-length poems: 'The Forest' (1954), 'Plant Upbringing' (1956), 'Diary of Age' (1958), 'Description of the Body' (1959), 'The Meaning of the Blind' (1962), and 'Our Way of Being in Danger' (1966). Each of these, apart from 'Plant Upbringing,' was published as a separate book, which Vakalo herself designed. ('Plant Upbringing' was originally included in the volume Wall Painting, of which Vakalo later repudiated all but this single long poem.) For Vakalo, these poems formed a larger, accretive whole, which she titled Prin Apo Ton Lyrismo (Before Lyricism). By bringing these poems together under a single cover, Before Lyricism allows us to see the complex web of intertextual relations that bind these books together. Meanwhile, by bringing these poems into English, this volume will enrich not only our knowledge of this key period in Vakalo's career, but English-language readers' understanding of modern Greek poetry as a whole.

But life at Henry VIII's court holds more than artifice for an intelligent observer, and Honor knows how to watch--and when to act. . . Angered by the humiliation heaped upon her mistress as Henry cavorts with Anne Boleyn and presses Rome for a divorce, Honor volunteers to carry letters to the Queen's allies. It's a risky game, but Honor is confident--until she's proven wrong by dashing courtier Richard Thornleigh--a man who awakens her heart, and who also has something to hide. . .. Swept into a tide of intrigue and danger that stretches across Europe, the Queen's lady is about to learn everything: about pride, passion, greed--and the conscience of the King. . . Book Somehow They Knew

Download or read book Somehow They Knew written by Anthony M. Cooper and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love stories are as old as time. What makes this one different is that it is true. It is an enchanting story that starts during the Second World War. An artillery officer about to go overseas on active service meets a pretty girl in a small village in the south of England. She is a talented draftswoman in the drawing office of a key wartime research establishment. They fall in love. His embarkation leave turns into a whirlwind courtship. Separated by war and duty, they never lose hope that one day they will be together. There is a first-hand account of the Allied landings in North Africa and the invasion of Sicily. A charming picture is painted of the day-to-day life of the young girl as she awaits his return, with fascinating glimpses of life in wartime Britain. Their dreams come true and they are married. In the post-war years their life together is rich in travel and adventure; the scene moves to Singapore, Hong Kong, America and France. It contains many amusing incidents and anecdotes that portray everyday life in the half- century that has just ended. Through it all runs the thread of their timeless romance. It is a lovely story that never loses its enchantment. It will have special appeal in an age of some cynicism about romance and marriage. Once started, it is hard to put this book down.
