Book excerpt: The effect of nutrition on the vital process of brain development has received increased attention in the last two decades. Using animal models, experimental research scientists have accumulated a wealth of infor mation and epidemiological studies of field workers have brought the animals and human studies together. Most times, there is an agreement on the results of animal and human experiences, but occasionally a voice of uncertainty is heard when results of animal studies are extrapolated to humans. After all, the human brain is far more complex than that of other species, and comparisons are not always accurate. Behavioral sci entists have attempted to correlate the findings of the biochemists and neurochemists to the "working" of the brain. Severe effects of malnutrition on body growth and function can usually be reversed by corrective procedures. But when such effects include the impact on brain development, the outcome can be devas tating. Underdevelopment of the brain caused by malnutrition during early life may not respond to corrective measures in later life. Undoubt edly this is a very controversial issue and the final verdict has not been reached. Unfortunately, even with today's tremendous technological innovations and applications, there are millions of people, including infants and children, who cannot obtain adequate food and are therefore exposed to damaging effects on the orderly development of the central vii PREFACE viii nervous system. Thus, this is a critical issue to many struggling popu lations who can ill afford such deprivation.

It can impede behavioural and cognitive development and educability, thereby undermining future work productivity. Chapter authors are experts in this field of research and provide an up-to-date insight into the role of the individual nutrients in brain development and function.

Book From Neurons to Neighborhoods

Download or read book From Neurons to Neighborhoods written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-11-13 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we raise young children is one of today's most highly personalized and sharply politicized issues, in part because each of us can claim some level of "expertise." The debate has intensified as discoveries about our development-in the womb and in the first months and years-have reached the popular media. How can we use our burgeoning knowledge to assure the well-being of all young children, for their own sake as well as for the sake of our nation? Drawing from new findings, this book presents important conclusions about nature-versus-nurture, the impact of being born into a working family, the effect of politics on programs for children, the costs and benefits of intervention, and other issues. The committee issues a series of challenges to decision makers regarding the quality of child care, issues of racial and ethnic diversity, the integration of children's cognitive and emotional development, and more. Authoritative yet accessible, From Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the evidence about "brain wiring" and how kids learn to speak, think, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the climate-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.

Download or read book Discovering the Brain written by National Academy of Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain ... There is no other part of the human anatomy that is so intriguing. How does it develop and function and why does it sometimes, tragically, degenerate? The answers are complex. In Discovering the Brain, science writer Sandra Ackerman cuts through the complexity to bring this vital topic to the public. The 1990s were declared the "Decade of the Brain" by former President Bush, and the neuroscience community responded with a host of new investigations and conferences. Discovering the Brain is based on the Institute of Medicine conference, Decade of the Brain: Frontiers in Neuroscience and Brain Research. Discovering the Brain is a "field guide" to the brainâ€"an easy-to-read discussion of the brain's physical structure and where functions such as language and music appreciation lie. Ackerman examines: How electrical and chemical signals are conveyed in the brain. The mechanisms by which we see, hear, think, and pay attentionâ€"and how a "gut feeling" actually originates in the brain. Learning and memory retention, including parallels to computer memory and what they might tell us about our own mental capacity. Development of the brain throughout the life span, with a look at the aging brain. Ackerman provides an enlightening chapter on the connection between the brain's physical condition and various mental disorders and notes what progress can realistically be made toward the prevention and treatment of stroke and other ailments. Finally, she explores the potential for major advances during the "Decade of the Brain," with a look at medical imaging techniquesâ€"what various technologies can and cannot tell usâ€"and how the public and private sectors can contribute to continued advances in neuroscience. This highly readable volume will provide the public and policymakersâ€"and many scientists as wellâ€"with a helpful guide to understanding the many discoveries that are sure to be announced throughout the "Decade of the Brain."

Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled EFFECTS OF PERINATAL MALNUTRITION ON BRAIN DEVELOPMENT IN RATS submitted by Wang Ling for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2006 The perinatal period, the period around the time of birth, is critical for brain development in most mammalian species. Numerous studies reported in the literature have shown that nutritional insults during this period can cause life-long impairment in various brain functions, including learning and memory function. How perinatal malnutrition leads to impairment in brain learning and memory function is still unclear. An emerging theory suggests that nutritional factors may modulate critical gene expression and subsequently lead to the functional alteration. More resent studies have shown that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a crucial role in brain learning and memory function. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of perinatal malnutrition on BDNF gene expression in the brain and the effects on spatial learning and memory function. Laboratory rats (Wistar and Sprague-Dawley strains) were used as an animal model. Pregnant or lactating rats were subjected to various types of nutritional insults, including calorie restriction, protein malnutrition or n-3 fatty acid deficiency, and their offspring were evaluated for the spatial learning and memory performance using the Morris water maze test. The concentrations of BDNF and BDNF mRNA in various regions of the brain were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) respectively. It was found that prenatal 50% calorie restriction significantly reduced the levels of BDNF and its mRNA in hippocampus. Calorie restriction also caused significant impairment in spatial learning ability in the rats. The effects appeared to be proportionate to the duration of prenatal calorie restriction. The effects of perinatal protein malnutrition on spatial learning and memory performance and BDNF gene expression varied in rats depending on the time and duration of the dietary insults. Rats fed with a low protein diet (6% vs. 20% in control) during the four weeks period after birth showed poor spatial learning and memory performance at ten weeks of age accompanied with significant decrease in BDNF and its mRNA concentrations in hippocampus. Rats subjected to the low protein diet two weeks before and four weeks after birth also showed a significantly poor learning and memory performance at four but not ten weeks of age. Moderate decrease in BDNF concentration was observed in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Dietary n-3 fatty acid deficiency for three generations led to significant depletion of decosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the brain tissue. Rats with depleted brain DHA showed dramatic impairment in learning and memory ability at four and ten weeks of age. BDNF mRNA concentration was also significantly reduced in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus in DHA depleted rat pups at four weeks of age. In conclusion, results of the present study indicate that perinatal malnutrition generally reduces BDNF gene expression in the brain and causes impairment in spatial learning and memory performance. Severity of the effect increases with an increased duration of the nu
