Book Mallika e Tarannum Noorjehan

Download or read book Mallika e Tarannum Noorjehan written by Iʻjāz Gul and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India split into India and Pakistan and forced people to opt for one or the other. It affected all sectors including the film industry. Singer-actress Noorjehan represented the generation that suffered the most. After becoming immensely popular across the country in the 1930s and 1940s, she opted for Pakistan after the Partition. But physical location of artists has often failed to divide them or their fan following. This was very true of Noorjehan. The magical quality of her voice continued to wield a charm on both the countries.Fans treated her as a common treasure and a symbol of shared tradition and values. She was the most sensational singer-star of the Indian film industry of her time and was often called Mallika-e-Tarannum (the queen of melody). Even Lata Mangeshkar, referred to as the nightingale because of her melodious voice, was inspired by her. She was born in Qasoor (Punjab) of undivided India in 1926. She perfected her classical singing under Ustad Ghulam Mohammad Khan and enthralled audience with her personality which was a rare blend of beauty, voice, acting and success. She passed away in Pakistan in 2000. Her first visit to India after Partition was in 1982, when she was welcomed with open arms by one and all including the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. She was also received by Dilip Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The audience had got one more opportunity to hear her sing live Awaz De Kahan Hai& Her voice had not lost the magic touch. The 10,000 songs she rendered in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi acted as a vibrant link between both sides of the border reminding people of their glorious past. Her first major hit was Khandaan in 1942, after which she married its director Shaukat Hussain Rizvi and shifted to Bombay (now Mumbai). Soon followed other hits such as Duhai (1943), Naukar (1943), Nandan (1943), Dost (1944), Badi Maa (1945), Gaon Ki Gori (1945) and Anmol Ghari (1946). In Jugnu in 1943, her lead actor was Dilip Kumar. In Zeenat (1945) she popularized Qawwali with songs such as Aahein Na Bhari Shikwein Na Kiye. While her professional side was exemplary, there was turmoil in her personal life. She had a series of flings, two divorces and many scandals. She was very possessive and thought she could hold people through emotions. Her failure to retain those she considered dear hurt her and left her heart-broken.

Book excerpt: An essential resource for scholars, connoisseurs and serious fans of Indian cinema, Take-2 makes for an entertaining, informative and nostalgia-filled read In the last few years there has been a glut of books on Indian cinema but most of them focus on the life and times of famous stars or celebrate popular film classics. Even though information and film trivia are now easier to access than ever before, some films have completely disappeared with not even a single print available due to reasons both tragic and strange. Also lost in time are some filmmakers and actors who once added their bit to the history of Indian cinema but have now simply vanished from our collective memory. In Take-2, Deepa Gahlot reacquaints or introduces us to 50 films (and many artistes) that merit our attention. While some on this list were chosen because they were the first Indian films of their kind, or were obscure films by well-known directors, others deserve mention because they were by creative talents whose contribution to Hindi cinema has been overlooked. Gahlot’s mission to rescue and preserve these forgotten gems should inspire us to go back and take another look.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yesterday’s Melodies Todays Memories is a rare collection of profiles of all important music-makers of the Hindi Film Industry between 1931 and 1970. It not only gives a biographical background of each music artiste, but it goes further to interview many of the surviving giants and completes the task by listing some of the best songs with which that person is associated. Here are singers that include the whole gamut from KL Saigal to Asha Bhosle, lyricists that include Sahir and Gulzar, music composers from Naushad to RD Burman, artistes that were part-time singers and full time actors like Ashok Kumar, melody queens like Noor Jahan and Lata Mangeshkar, gentlemen lyricists like Prem Dhawan and gentlemen singers like Manna Dey, mischief-makers like Kishore Kumar and rebels without pause like OP Nayyar and Majrooh Sultanpuri. In fact, this book is a house in which all these great talents live happily, each in a separate room, given space for self-expression. The serious research that has gone into this book is evident as you move from one chapter to another, opening layers after layers presented non-seriously. Over 100 music makers are presented this way and many more in a huge single chapter.

Book excerpt: Fawzia Afzal-Khan's book is an important and timely feminist intervention in the study of classical music and a cogent challenge to the prevailing antisecular orthodoxy in the academy. In this complex and sensitive study...of the careers of artistes like Malka Pukhraj, Roshanara Begum, Reshma, and of the newer music and musical space offered by Coke Studio, Afzal-Khan shows us the multiple ways in which women performers negotiated and continue to negotiate their way through the numerous challenges thrown their way in the wake of the partitioning of the subcontinent and the multiple demands placed on them.
