Book The Culture of Crime

Download or read book The Culture of Crime written by Boaz Ganor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no journalistic work more deserving of the designation "story" than news of crime. From antiquity, the culture of crime has been about the human condition, and whether information comes from Homer, Hollywood, or the city desk, it is a bottom about the human capacity for cruelty and suffering, about desperation and fear, about sex, race, and public morals. Facts are important to the telling of a crime story, but ultimately less so than the often apocryphal narratives we derive from them. The Culture of Crime is hence about the most common and least studies staple of news. Its prominence dates at least to the 1830s, when the urban penny press employed violence, sex, and scandal to build dizzying high levels of circulation and begin the modern age of mass media. In its coverage of crime, in particular, the popular press represented a new kind of journalism, if not a new definition of news, that made available for public consumption whole areas of social and private life that the mercantile, elite, and political press earlier ignored. This legacy has continued unabated for 150 years. The book explores new wrinkles in the study of crime and as a mass cultural activity from exploring the private lives of public officials to dangers posed by constraints to a free press. The volume is prepared with the rigor of a scholarly brief but also the excitement of actual crime stories as such. Throughout, the reader is reminded that crime stories are both news and drama, and to ignore either is to diminish the other. The work delves deeply into current problems without either sentimental or trivial pursuits. It will be a volume of great interest to people in communications research, the social sciences, criminologists, and not least, the broad public which must endure the punishment of crime and the thrill of the crime story alike.

Osterman, author of Short Changed "You can count on Coburn for a good mystery..." —Bryon Rupert McCafferty, Seattle Book Journal Malice murder is by law a homicide done with express or implied malice. Express malice is the deliberate intention to unlawfully take the life of another human being, which is manifested by external circumstances capable of proof. Malice is implied when no considerable provocation appears and where all the circumstances of the killing show an abandoned and malignant heart. KWPD Detective Earl Gleason and his new partner, Detective Rachel Powers, have their hands full with a series of brutal homicides in a homeless encampment. Each a puzzle of its own with no apparent connection to the others. Other than the fierce brutality involved, that is. Jack Hunter returns to Key West and is soon caught up in the investigation. And in no time, falls under suspicion. Nor does it take him long to get the attention of one killer as another one comes for him.

Book Sunshine in the Dark

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susan J. Fernandez
  • Publisher : University Press of Florida
  • Release : 2022-05-31
  • ISBN : 0813072387
  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book Sunshine in the Dark written by Susan J. Fernandez and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida has been the location and subject of hundreds of feature films, from Cocoanuts (1929) to Monster (2004). Portraying the state and its people from the silent era to the present, these films have explored the multitude of Florida images and cliches that have captured the public's imagination--a nature lover's paradise, a wildlife refuge, a tourist destination, home to the "cracker," and a haven for the retired, the rich, the immigrant, and the criminal. Sunshine in the Dark is the first complete study of how the movie industry has immortalized Florida’s extraordinary scenery, characters, and history on celluloid. Historians Fernández and Ingalls have identified more than 300 films about Florida--many of them shot on location in the state--to analyze how filmmakers from the Marx Brothers and John Huston to Oliver Stone and Francis Ford Coppola have portrayed the state and its people. Prior to the 1960s, cinematic trips to Florida usually brought happy endings in movies like Moon Over Miami (1942), but since the 1970s, films like Scarface (1982) have emphasized the state's menacing aspects. In the authors' analysis of the films, which examines location settings, plotlines, and characters, they find a bevy of Florida stereotypes among the leading characters--from the struggling crackers in The Yearling (1946) to the drug-addicted con man in Adaptation (2002). Featuring more than 100 still photographs from movies, as well as filmographies by year and genre, the book is an encyclopedic resource for movie fans and anyone interested in Florida popular culture.

Book Miami Vice

  • Author : Steven M. Sanders
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 2010-09-15
  • ISBN : 0814335411

Download or read book Miami Vice written by Steven M. Sanders and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses the aesthetic appeal, production history, philosophical themes, and enduring importance of the groundbreaking 1980s television series. There may be no more iconic image of mid-1980s network television than Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs speeding down Biscayne Boulevard in Crockett's sleek black Ferrari on Miami Vice. With its unprecedented $1.3 million-per-episode budget and executive producer Michael Mann at the helm, Miami Vice brought feature film production values to prime time and redefined the television police drama. In Miami Vice author Steven Sanders argues that the show's themes, narratives, visual realization, and sound design created a new standard of crime television that has its roots in classic film noir and neo-noir. In chapter 1 Sanders describes the social, political, and cultural background that led Anthony Yerkovich, creator of Miami Vice, and Mann to use Miami and its beaches not merely as a backdrop but as a character in its own right. Along with the show's visual aspects, Sanders identifies themes of ambiguity, alienation, personal identity, and irony that came to define the distinctive "TV noir" style of Miami Vice. In chapter 2, Sanders discusses four key episodes to examine the existentialist and postmodern themes that can be found in their story lines and visual style. In chapter 3, Sanders considers questions of authenticity, redemption, and politics in Miami Vice, with reference to episodes that demonstrate the show's attention to the political corruption and intrigue surrounding the war on drugs. In the final chapter, Sanders offers a novel explanation of why Miami Vice matters to film and video scholars. Miami Vice's visual and musical appeal, cultural resonance, and topicality made it absorbing entertainment in its own day; Sanders proves that its exploration of social, moral, political, and philosophical issues make it worth watching twenty-five years later. Fans of the show and scholars of television history and American popular culture will appreciate this illuminating look at Miami Vice.

After splitting up with her fiancé, Anthony Quintana, Gail is just trying to get her life back in some sort of order. But when Anthony’s teenage daughter, Angela, comes to Gail in secret and begs her to defend her boyfriend, Bobby, a dancer with the Miami City Ballet who’s been charged with murdering a wealthy playboy, she can’t say no. Gail hopes to have easy access to someone who can provide Bobby with an alibi. But the witness, who happens to be a criminal judge, has lawyered up with none other than Anthony Quintana. Now on opposite sides, Gail and Anthony are each prepared to do whatever it takes to protect their clients. But as they struggle to keep their unavoidably intertwined professional lives as separate as possible from their personal lives, a remorseless killer has a different final verdict in mind. An Edgar Award finalist for the first book in the series, Suspicion of Innocence, as well as a former prosecutor, “Parker captures the roiling politics of Miami, as well as its color, all the while delivering a tight suspense story” (Chicago Tribune). Suspicion of Malice is the 5th book in the Suspicion series, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
