Rapid advances in media and communication technologies and the accompanying developments in social, cultural, political, and economic realms pose unexpected challenges to the curricula of long-established media and communication schools. As opposed to rigidly structured nation-based mass media systems of the past century, the new global media sphere celebrates the breaking down of borders – whether spatial, cultural or social. Today, in the second half of the second decade of the 21st century, this problem translates into what, and how to teach students of media, who in all likelihood, are more adept media consumers and producers, than their teachers. In a region where educational institutions and educators don’t transform as fast as media technologies do, there is a need to problematize, and to reflect upon the situation. This edited volume examines critical issues related to media studies at local institutions of higher learning, and includes a sampling of research charting new directions in local media scholarship. Contributions to this edited volume reflect the shared concerns of media educators and researchers in Malaysia and two neighboring countries, Indonesia and Thailand. This volume is a comprehensive survey of current understandings of Malaysia’s Orang Asli communities (including contributions from scholars within the Orang Asli community), looking at language, archaeology, history, religion and issues of education, health and social change, as well as questions of land rights and control of resources. Until about 1960 most Orang Asli lived in small camps and villages in the coastal and interior forests, or in isolated rural areas, and made their living by various combinations of hunting, gathering, fishing, agriculture, and trading forest products. By the end of the century, logging, economic development projects such as oil palm plantations, and resettlement programmes have displaced many Orang Asli communities and disrupted long-established social and cultural practices. The chapters in the present volume show Orang Asli responses to the challenges posed by a rapidly changing world. The authors also highlight the importance of Orang Asli studies for the anthropological understanding of small-scale indigenous societies in general.

Malaysia has also faced all of those aspects. However, the highlight of this book is the process called defeudalisation. The 2008 General Election has shown that a new public sphere of cyberspace or the Internet and the mobile phone was accessed and utilised significantly and was enough to be used by the opposition in influencing the public to vote them. It became one of the major factors in determining the result of the election which is for the first time the opposition denying the ruling government a two third majority in the parliament and taking control or governing of five states. This new and influential public sphere in Malaysia has reversed the Habermas’ argument of refeudalisation to a process called “Defeudalisation”. However, in creating a civil public sphere for the people to deliberate views, this book also argues that Malaysia needs a responsible media or freedom of the press with social responsibility. This book urges Malaysia to accept the idea or theory of social responsibility and the concept of public journalism in the public sphere.
