Book Transforming Malaysia

Download or read book Transforming Malaysia written by Anthony Milner and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of Malaysia’s 13th General Election some commentators speak of a sharpening of ethnic politics — with Prime Minister Najib blaming a “Chinese tsunami” for his government’s polling setbacks; others are optimistic about the arrival of a new “non-racialized form of politics” and the emergence of “transethnic solidarity”. This book, which engages with both the race paradigm and its opponents, warns that change is likely to come slowly — but is not impossible. Malaysia’s race paradigm is a man-made ideological construct — one that has been contested in the past, and could realistically be contested in the future. In confronting the continuing challenge of globalization, Malaysians should not neglect the history of ideas — and ideology — as they search for new options.

Book New Media Political Engagement And Participation in Malaysia

Download or read book New Media Political Engagement And Participation in Malaysia written by Sara Chinnasamy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the exponential growth of independent news portal (INPs) in Malaysia and discusses the extent of impacts generated from these portals in Malaysian electoral conduct especially during Malaysia's 12th and 13th general elections. The mainstream media in Malaysia has for decades been controlled by strict laws such as the Printing Presses and Publications Act (PPPA) and the Sedition Act, as well as self-censorship by print and broadcast journalists and editors. The rise of INP in Malaysia has challenged this government stranglehold, as well as making information available much faster than the mainstream media. The undeniable speed of the news posted on INP which often come with interactive contents are seen to have caused a remarkable increment on public’s options with regards to expressing their political views. Some of the INPs have also impressively taken up a notch by providing live streaming videos or interesting online visual news which indirectly unifies various sectors of pressure groups in providing options of circulating and disseminating information to the public. The interviews conducted for this book provide deeper insights from those producing news and at the same time provide a specific and thorough observation on political events including representatives of the Malaysian middle class, Opposition parties, youth and university students, NGOs and civil society movements. Chinnasamy investigates key questions relating to this shift in relation to media preference concerning on the mainstream and political landscape in Malaysia. Did the INP evolve new democratic movement in the country or induce a change in the way the government retains its power by increasing people's active engagement in political participation? Did any revolution in government-managed media landscape occur drastically? If so, how did they accomplish these changes? This book will fill the gap of existing research on how far have the INP empowered themselves to be the third force in fighting democratic movement in the country and how the ruling government continues seeing it as a contention, as foreseen by many experts in the industry.

Book Sinophone Malaysian Literature

Download or read book Sinophone Malaysian Literature written by Alison M. Groppe and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's recent economic growth has fed a rapid increase in the study of modern Chinese language and literature globally. In this shifting global context, authors who work on the edges of the literary empire raise important questions about the homogeneity of language, identity and culture that is produced by the modern Chinese literary canon. This book examines a key segment of this literature and asks, "What does it mean to be of Chinese descent and Chinese-speaking outside of China?" While there have been several excellent works that deal with individual Chinese authors from Malaysia, there is to date no broadly framed and comprehensive study of the body of Chinese diasporic literature emerging from this multiethnic, polylinguistic country. This neglect is surprising given the vibrant development of Chinese Malaysian literature. This book fills the gap by looking specifically at how diasporic Chinese subjects make sense of their Chinese and Malaysian identities in postcolonial Malaysia. This book will be of value to scholars and students of Chinese-language literature and culture. It will also appeal to scholars and students in the fields of Chinese and Southeast Asia studies as well as those interested in postcolonial, diaspora, migration, Asian American studies, and world literature.

Book Identity and the State in Malaysia

Download or read book Identity and the State in Malaysia written by Fausto Barlocco and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the case study of the Kadazan of Sabah, a region in the Malaysian section of Borneo, this book examines national, ethnic and local identities in post-colonial states. It shows the importance of the connection between lived experience and identity and belonging, and by doing so, provides a deeper and fuller explanation of the apparently contradictory conflict between different collective forms of identification and the way in which they are employed in reference to everyday situations. Based on ethnographic fieldwork and historical analysis, the book reconstructs the development of the cultural forms and labels associated with the collective identities it studies. The author employs an approach that sees collective identification as an expression of everyday practices and that stresses the importance of participation and familiarity between forms of identification and lived experience. In this context, he considers anthropological debates about state-minorities relations and issues of ‘dignity’ and ‘respect’. Explaining state-minority relations in Malaysia and more generally in other post-colonial realities, the insights presented are highly relevant to other cases of conflicting allegiances and identity politics in settings of post-colonial nation-building.

Book Global Business Services Industry in Malaysia

Download or read book Global Business Services Industry in Malaysia written by Aini Aman and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-03-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the increasing interest in Finance and Accounting Shared Services (F&A SS) there is no specific study that focuses on the growth and potential of the Global Business Services (GBS) industry in Malaysia. Almost without exception studies of both Malaysia and competitors countries (mostly by management consultants) tend to present a profile of demographic, social, political and infrastructure characteristics, leaving organizations to make their own sense of the potential of growth especially when the situation in many developing countries is both new and different. This book aims to provide understanding of F&A SS and GBS industry in Malaysia that could assist you in understanding the potential of setting up your shared service operation in Malaysia, the world's third best location for offshoring since 2004. What are the challenges faced by F&A SS firms in GBS industry? How do F&A SS firms overcome challenges and ensure the growth of the GBS industry? This book provides Malaysia's competitiveness together with its strategy to move up the value chain using Porter's Diamond Framework. This lead into a gap analysis between current capabilities and resources required for the growth of the GBS industry.

Book Ethnicization and Identity Construction in Malaysia

Download or read book Ethnicization and Identity Construction in Malaysia written by Frederik Holst and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first monograph to provide an in-depth and multifaceted study of the processes of ethnicization and identity construction in Malaysia, from the colonial period until the present. In his analysis, the author takes multiple layers of ethnicization into account and shows how these have shaped Malaysia’s socio-political system and society in different ways. Moving beyond a center-focused, top-down-oriented perception of identity politics, this work highlights on the one hand the role and position of a multitude of actors - from grassroots level to mainstream politics - who contribute to the persistence of ethnicization in Malaysia in numerous ways. On the other hand, it also shows where and under which circumstances possibilities for transethnic cooperation arise. A multi-disciplinary approach, substantiated by empirical data based on qualitative and quantitative methodologies, provides a perspective that moves beyond stereotypical narrations of Malaysia as being constituted by mainly three separate, homogenous groups. At the same time, this book gives a detailed and comprehensive account of political and historical developments and constitutes a rich resource for any Malaysia-related research. While the focus of this publication lies on Malaysia, the concept of manifestations and implementations of ethnicization provides an analytical framework that can also be applied in the study of ethnicization and identity construction elsewhere in the region and beyond.

Book National Identity Language and Education in Malaysia

Download or read book National Identity Language and Education in Malaysia written by Noriyuki Segawa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which language and education policies have contributed to the development of national integration in Malaysia, by examining whether and how policies have succeeded in forming a middle ground. Considered through the lenses of policy-making structure and achievement, this volume examines the relationships between the formation of a middle ground in language and education policies and the political structure, economic growth strategies and social system. It then goes on to explore the extent to which these policies have contributed to national integration whilst providing a valuable discussion on the complexities involved in developing a consistent policy framework. Drawing on research surveys of Malay proficiency amongst ethnic Chinese people, it ultimately demonstrates how the unification of education streams has contributed to the spread of the Malay language as a major medium of inter-ethnic communication within the Chinese community. As the most up-to-date study of contemporary Malaysian politics, focusing on the issue of national integration, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Southeast Asian politics, ethnicity, and education policy.
