Download or read book With Love From Malaysia written by M. Bakri Musa and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Love, From Malaysia is an intimate look at Malaysia in the 1970s, through a series of letters home by a young Canadian mother. With two toddlers and her Malaysian surgeon husband, she adjusts to life in a new country and strange culture. Karen E. Musa chronicles the challenges of tolerating a stifling bureaucracy and accommodating "how they do things differently." With Love, From Malaysia narrates the young family's rich and varied experiences, from their royal audience with the Sultan of Johore to visits to the kampong. For Karen Musa, the warmth of her husband's large extended family considerably eased her culture shock of "enjoying" the "luxury" of household maids, her continuing "saga of the telephone," and other tribulations in dealing with Third World officialdom. The family's adventures in the mundane chores of daily living, which the natives take in stride, make for entertaining reading. This is the Malaysia that natives and foreigners alike rarely experience or appreciate.

Download or read book Monkeying in Malaysia written by Adeline Foo and published by Epigram Books. This book was released on with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a successful fundraising effort, I was off to Sarawak, Malaysia with my bros Alvin and Anthony for an exciting jungle trek! And, more importantly, I’d get to see my dear friend Jolin. (Mum calls her the “object of my infatuation”.) Our guide, Jolin’s weird “jungle man” Uncle Jufri, warned us to never let our guard down, for the rainforest is full of secrets and surprises. After getting drenched in a thunderstorm, and some icky encounters with mussels, toads, leeches and ants, we thought we’d seen and survived it all. But then there were those footprints, BIGGER THAN A HUMAN’S, that just couldn’t be explained.
Download or read book A grammar of Kalamang written by Eline Visser and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a grammar of Kalamang, a Papuan language of western New Guinea in the east of Indonesia. It is spoken by around 130 people in the villages Mas and Antalisa on the biggest of the Karas Islands, which lie just off the coast of Bomberai Peninsula. This work is the first comprehensive grammar of a Papuan language in the Bomberai area. It is based on eleven months of fieldwork. The primary source of data is a corpus of more than 15 hours of spoken Kalamang recorded and transcribed between 2015 and 2019. This grammar covers a wide range of topics beyond a phonological and morphosyntactic description, including prosody, narrative styles, and information structure. More than 1000 examples illustrate the analyses, and are where possible taken from naturalistic spoken Kalamang. The descriptive approach in this grammar is informed by current linguistic theory, but is not driven by any specific school of thought. Comparison to other West Bomberai or eastern Indonesian languages is taken into account whenever it is deemed helpful. Kalamang has several typologically interesting features, such as unpredictable stress, minimalistic give-constructions consisting of just two pronouns, aspectual markers that follow the subject, and the NP and predicate – rather than the noun and verb – as important domains of attachment. This grammar is accompanied by an openly accessible archive of linguistic and cultural material and a dictionary with 2700 lemmas. It serves as a document of one of the world's many endangered languages.
Download or read book Building Cultural Nationalism in Malaysia written by Timothy P. Daniels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text contains an examination of processes of cultural citizenship in peninsular Malaysia. In particular, it focuses upon the diverse residents of the southwestern state of Melaka and their negotiations of belonging and incorporation in Malaysian society. Following political independence and the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1957 Malaysian citizenship was extended to most members of these diverse social identities. In this post-colonial context, Timothy P. Daniels examines how public celebrations and representations, religious festivals, and patterns of social relations are connected to processes of inclusion and exclusion.
