Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poor Man's Physician, the Sick Man's Friend, or Nature's Botanic Garden Exhibited to View: Its Medical Qualities Unfolded, Symptoms of Diseases Described, and Cures Made Easy IN compiling this little treatise on the use of' our own country medicine, I have not been over anxious to avoid the scoffs or ridicule of that part of community, who treat all such publications with contempt; neither have I endeavoured to court the applause of any one; but simply to compile and bring together this valuable body of recipes, which lay scattered in such a manner, that the public could not be benefitted as they now may, provided they pay that attention to the work w ch will be both for their health and in terest. Being persuaded, and fully in the belief, that our country afforded medicines of the best quality, sufficient to cure all diseases that are cu rable, and observing that there are many linger rug complaints that our regular Physicians did not, or could not cure, whether through ignor ance or design, I am not able to say. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wilderness Cure The publication of the article Camp Lou, in Harper's zviagazine for May, 1881, has called forth such a ood of inquiries that the author finds it quite beyond his powers to make individual reply to each. Precisely those minor details which could not well be embodied in a magazine paper have been most sought after by correspondents. This little volume, it is believed, contains the information desired. Book Reading Fiction in Antebellum America

Download or read book Reading Fiction in Antebellum America written by James L. Machor and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James L. Machor offers a sweeping exploration of how American fiction was received in both public and private spheres in the United States before the Civil War. Machor takes four antebellum authors—Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Catharine Sedgwick, and Caroline Chesebro'—and analyzes how their works were published, received, and interpreted. Drawing on discussions found in book reviews and in private letters and diaries, Machor examines how middle-class readers of the time engaged with contemporary fiction and how fiction reading evolved as an interpretative practice in nineteenth-century America. Through careful analysis, Machor illuminates how the reading practices of nineteenth-century Americans shaped not only the experiences of these writers at the time but also the way the writers were received in the twentieth century. What Machor reveals is that these authors were received in ways strikingly different from how they are currently read, thereby shedding significant light on their present status in the literary canon in comparison to their critical and popular positions in their own time. Machor deftly combines response and reception criticism and theory with work in the history of reading to engage with groundbreaking scholarship in historical hermeneutics. In so doing, Machor takes us ever closer to understanding the particular and varying reading strategies of historical audiences and how they impacted authors’ conceptions of their own readership.

Book Histories of Medicine and Healing in the Indian Ocean World Volume One

Download or read book Histories of Medicine and Healing in the Indian Ocean World Volume One written by Anna Winterbottom and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary work, the first of two volumes, presents essays on various aspects of disease, medicine, and healing in different locations in and around the Indian Ocean from the ninth century to the early modern period. Themes include theoretical explanations for disease, concepts of fertility, material culture, healing in relation to diplomacy and colonialism, public health, and the health of slaves and migrant workers. Overall, the books argue that, throughout the period of study, the Indian Ocean has been the site of multiple interconnected medical interactions that may be viewed in the context of the environmental factors connecting the region. The two volumes are the first to use the Indian Ocean World as a geographical and conceptual framework for the study of disease. It will appeal to academics and graduate students working in the fields of medical and scientific history, as well as in the growing fields of Indian Ocean studies and global history.
