Book Making our Way through the World

Download or read book Making our Way through the World written by Margaret S. Archer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we reflect upon ourselves and our concerns in relation to society, and vice versa? Human reflexivity works through 'internal conversations' using language, but also emotions, sensations and images. Most people acknowledge this 'inner-dialogue' and can report upon it. However, little research has been conducted on 'internal conversations' and how they mediate between our ultimate concerns and the social contexts we confront. In this book, Margaret Archer argues that reflexivity is progressively replacing routine action in late modernity, shaping how ordinary people make their way through the world. Using interviewees' life and work histories, she shows how 'internal conversations' guide the occupations people seek, keep or quit; their stances towards structural constraints and enablements; and their resulting patterns of social mobility.

Book THE PHILOSOPHY BOOK COSMOCELLULAR HYPOTHESIS

Download or read book THE PHILOSOPHY BOOK COSMOCELLULAR HYPOTHESIS written by Dr Kamlesh Patel and published by Dhruv Publication (Self Publication). This book was released on with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You cannot ignore the fact that some time or the other, you are in search of the truth of life, death and the purpose of your very existence. This book, biologically and exobiologically, explains about life which is just a dynamic expression of nature’s special nonmolecular-energy waves at the different physical platforms like special molecular levels of the ecosystem of the earth. And these molecular levels are biologically called different living species. And this dynamic exchange of energy is scientifically explained to answer the query ‘Nothing lives forever; yet, life continues, since evolution of the first life on earth.’ In short, every era has one such epic (Granth) and Cosmocellular Hypothesis is undoubtedly an upcoming epic (as millennium-metaphysics) of this new era. It took the author more than 22 years in Vedic research work under strictly-neutral scrutinization of modern-science’s laws. Thus, it shows nature’s science (ancient Vedic science) in comparison to modern science (Machine Science), i.e. from East to West, for the youth of the 21st century. And this is reflected in every paragraph of this book Cosmocellular Hypothesis—A Journey from Meditation To Modern-Medicine that leaves every reader dumbstruck, by presenting him some still-unrevealed great mysteries of his own life and his home—the universe.

Book Making and Unmaking Ancient Memory

Download or read book Making and Unmaking Ancient Memory written by Martine De Marre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-20 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making and Unmaking Ancient Memory explores the way in which ancient Greeks and Romans represented their past, and in turn how modern literature and scholarship has approached the reception and transmission of some aspects of ancient culture. The contributions, organised into three sections – Political Legacies, Religious Identities, and Literary Traditions – explore case studies in memory and reception of the past. Through studying the techniques and strategies of ancient historiography, biography, hagiography, and art, as well as their effectiveness, this volume demonstrates how humanity has inevitably conveyed memory and history with (sub)conscious biases and preconceived ideas. In the current age of alternative facts, fake news, and post-truth discourses, these chapters highlight that such phenomena are by no means a recent development. This book offers valuable scholarly perspectives to academics and scholars interested in memory, historiography, and representations of the past in the ancient world, as well as those working on literary traditions and reception studies more broadly.

Book To Make Their Own Way in the World

Download or read book To Make Their Own Way in the World written by Ilisa Barbash and published by Aperture. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Make Their Own Way in the World is a profound consideration of some of the most challenging images in the early history of photography. The fifteen daguerreotypes--made in 1850 by photographer Joseph T. Zealy--portray Alfred, Delia, Drana, Fassena, Jack, Jem, and Renty, men and women of African descent who were enslaved in South Carolina. Since 1976, when the daguerreotypes were rediscovered at Harvard University's Peabody Museum, the photographs have been the subject of intense and widespread study. To Make Their Own Way in the World features essays by prominent scholars who explore everything from the photographs' historical context and the "science" of race to the ways in which photography created a visual narrative of slavery and its effects. Multidisciplinary, deeply collaborative, and with more than two hundred illustrations, including new photography by contemporary artist Carrie Mae Weems, this book frames the Zealy daguerreotypes as works of urgent contemporary inquiry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suppose you're offered an opportunity to experience something that is unlike anything you have ever encountered, but that's all you know—aside from the fact that the experience is physically safe and morally acceptable. How do you decide whether to take up the offer? Several philosophers have recently argued that we are in similar situations for more of our decisions than we usually recognize. Are they right? What resources can we draw on to create such situations? Are they enough to satisfy our aims of making the best decisions we can, especially in high stakes situations? This volume brings together philosophers and psychologists to investigate the phenomenon of transformative change and a host of fascinating questions it prompts. Taking their departure from seminal work on transformative choice and experience by L. A. Paul and Edna Ullmann-Margalit, the authors pursue fundamental questions concerning the nature of rationality, the limits of the imagination, and the metaphysics of the self. They also strike out into new areas, including value theory, aesthetics, moral and political philosophy. Several chapters present the results of experimental investigation into the psychology of transformation, self-concept, and moral learning.
