Book excerpt: This year you can change the world. Every single day 30,000 children around the world are dying from extreme poverty and Make Poverty History, a huge global campaign, has decided that 2005 is the year for this crisis to be taken in hand. In the lead up to the G8 Summit in Scotland this July Make Poverty History will be campaigning heavily to influence the world leaders to finally do something about it. Ending poverty is not about charity, it's about justice. The changes we need aren't monstrous or unimaginable. But they will require everyone to do something this year. This book tells you what and how. 'Make poverty history in 2005. Make history in 2005. Then we can all stand with our heads held high' NELSON MANDELA, Trafalgar Square, 2005

Download or read book Global Poverty written by Justin Thacker and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a number of secular philosophers have written on global poverty, theologians have either steered clear entirely or simply mimicked the political analysis currently on offer. Christian authors have argued either for a free market solution to global poverty or for a radical reform of global capitalism as the best approach, but the theological underpinnings of such conclusions are noticeable by their absence. Justin Thacker offers a new way forward. He suggests deeply theological answers to questions around the effect of capitalism on global poverty and whether aid is really a sustainable long term solution for the world’s poor. This book will challenge theologians, church leaders and congregations to consider much more seriously the huge implications of faith and theology on our attitude to those who live in extreme poverty.

Book The Africanization of Poverty

Download or read book The Africanization of Poverty written by Graham Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article explores the ways in which the British campaign coalition Make Poverty History represented Africa throughout 2005. Focusing particularly on the G8 Gleneagles summit, Make Poverty History (MPH) asserted a series of justice claims which had no geographical reference. Nevertheless, as a result of internal tensions within the coalition, and especially as a result of the ways in which MPH interacted with other political agencies as the summit approached, MPH's messages became increasingly interpolated by references to Africa as a result of the emergence of government, media, and celebrity involvement. The result of this was that global poverty increasingly became an African issue. As 2005 became the 'Year of Africa', the justice messages that constituted MPH were largely effaced by the more familiar imperial legacy which represents Africa as a place of indigence in need of outside assistance.
