Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murray Rothbard (1926-1995) was an economist, historian, philosopher, and legal theoretician. His work was unified by a passionate and resolute commitment to a libertarianism that may be characterized as 'anarcho-capitalism' and which implied a belief that even the legal system may be provided privately without the need for a coercive collective authority. Hence, anarcho-capitalists envisage a society where the traditional role of government is wholly subsumed by private, profit-making enterprises and all social relationships are ultimately founded upon consent. Rothbard's unique intellectual contribution was to build this system of thought from many pre-existing but previously disparate strands and to develop it to its logical conclusion. Rothbard's starting points were the notions of methodological individualism, natural rights theory, and individual self-ownership. He showed that if we wish these seriously then the justification for government falls away. According to Rothbard government can only be 'justified' if we abandon the notion that individuals have the right to determine what to do with their own bodies, a step he believed to be unconscionable.

Book The Modern Papacy

Download or read book The Modern Papacy written by Samuel Gregg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of the Enlightenment, modernity and the Papacy have experienced a difficult though never severed relationship. The Modern Papacy goes beyond the caricatures to demonstrate how the popes - specifically John Paul II and Benedict XVI - have articulated a sophisticated critique of the post-Enlightenment world, one that acknowledges the real progress made in modernity while simultaneously highlighting its political and philosophical shortcomings. Far from falling on deaf ears, the nature of their engagement with the modern world has sparked criticism and praise from Catholics and non-Catholics alike - sometimes in surprising ways. Whether the subject is faith and reason, religion and the modern sciences, the roots and future of Europe, or the origin and ends of human freedom, John Paul II and Benedict XVI pose questions that simply cannot be ignored, regardless of whether one likes their answers.

Book John Locke

  • Author : Eric Mack
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2013-02-07
  • ISBN : 162356851X
  • Pages : 151 pages

Download or read book John Locke written by Eric Mack and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Locke (1632-1704), one of the great philosophers, is probably best known for his contributions to political thought. In this outstanding volume, Eric Mack explains Locke's philosophical position, placing it in the tumultuous political and religious context of 17th century England. For Locke, entering into political society did not involve giving up one's natural rights, but rather transferring to governmental authority the job of protecting those rights. In this rigorous critical analysis, Mack argues that Locke provides an impressive - if not decisive - philosophical case for the view that individuals have natural rights to life, liberty and property, despite the existence or actions of any political authority.

Book Milton Friedman

    Book Details:

  • Release : 2013-09-26

Download or read book Milton Friedman written by William Ruger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milton Friedman (1912-2006) was one of the most important 20th century advocates of libertarian and conservative ideas in academia and amongst the wider public. He made a critical contribution to the development of the free market and monetarist economics that challenged the dominant interventionist and Keynesian paradigm throughout the developed world. His books, popular writings, and television programmes, were crucial to the public understanding of the role of the market in the promotion of human freedom and well-being. This outstanding sets out Friedman's intellectual contribution to economic methodology and our understanding of a host of economic phenomena, including the relationship between consumption and income, the workings of flexible exchange rates, and the relationship between inflation and the supply of money in the economy. Dr Ruger also sets out Friedman's contribution to political theory, discussing Friedman's work on the relationship between economic and political freedom, the social responsibilities of business, and the proper relationship between the individual and the state, particularly in the context of conscription, drug prohibition and discrimination.

Book Russell Kirk

Download or read book Russell Kirk written by Bradley J. Birzer and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging from two decades of the Great Depression and the New Deal and facing the rise of radical ideologies abroad, the American Right seemed beaten, broken, and adrift in the early 1950s. Although conservative luminaries such as T. S. Eliot, William F. Buckley Jr., Leo Strauss, and Eric Voegelin all published important works at this time, none of their writings would match the influence of Russell Kirk's 1953 masterpiece The Conservative Mind. This seminal book became the intellectual touchstone for a reinvigorated movement and began a sea change in Americans' attitudes toward traditionalism. In Russell Kirk, Bradley J. Birzer investigates the life and work of the man known as the founder of postwar conservatism in America. Drawing on papers and diaries that have only recently become available to the public, Birzer presents a thorough exploration of Kirk's intellectual roots and development. The first to examine the theorist's prolific writings on literature and culture, this magisterial study illuminates Kirk's lasting influence on figures such as T. S. Eliot, William F. Buckley Jr., and Senator Barry Goldwater—who persuaded a reluctant Kirk to participate in his campaign for the presidency in 1964. While several books examine the evolution of postwar conservatism and libertarianism, surprisingly few works explore Kirk's life and thought in detail. This engaging biography not only offers a fresh and thorough assessment of one of America's most influential thinkers but also reasserts his humane vision in an increasingly inhumane time.
