This event is expected to bring about collaboration, scientific transfer, and publications that can contribute to the scientific fields of arts, design and humanities. The conference aims to facilitate research presentations and knowledge exchange in art, design, technology, and social humanities, as well as create academic networks among students, lecturers and researchers in the related fields. Further, this conference will bring opportunities to learn together to develop quality research in various fields, expand the collaboration networks among universities and industries, and become a forum to disseminate research and knowledge to a wider audience. The committee received more than 130 papers from the participants and based on the results of the reviews, only 96 papers were declared qualified to be presented at the seminar and subsequently published in the proceedings of CONVASH-2019 Finally, the committee congratulates and expresses gratitude to the selected participants for the participation and paper publication in the proceeding of CONVASH-2019. Majapahit reached its peak during the reign of Rajasanagara, popularly known as Hayam Wuruk (1350-1389). Some of the brick structures of the ancient city, including gateways, temples and pools, can be still be seen today around the village of Trowulan in Mojokerto, reflecting the architecture that once defined the place. Besides stone statues and inscriptions, this mighty kingdom also left testimonies of everyday life in the form of terracotta artifacts. Not much is known about these artifacts, and what is known is complicated by the many fakes and replicas found in the antique markets. Some of them are in the shapes of humans, animals and mythological creatures. Their functions were diverse, ranging from architectural elements to garden furniture and household utensils. Majapahit Terracotta is a guide for collectors of Majapahit terracotta, to enable them to better distinguish authentic pieces from fakes or replicas. It will provide readers with insight into the exciting variety of this little known art form, drawing upon selected items in the collection which the author has carefully assembled over the past thirty years.

Book excerpt: There exist numerous free-standing figurative sculptures produced in Java between the eighth and fifteenth centuries whose dress display detailed textile patterns. This surviving body of sculpture, carved in stone and cast in metal, varying in both size and condition, remains in archaeological sites and museums in Indonesia and worldwide. The equatorial climate of Java has precluded any textiles from this period surviving. Therefore this book argues the textiles represented on these sculptures offer a unique insight into the patterned splendour of the textiles in circulation during this period. This volume contributes to our knowledge of the textiles in circulation at that time by including the first comprehensive record of this body of sculpture, together with the textile patterns classified into a typology of styles within each chapter.

In this area, the hybrid local Muslim pilgrimage culture is shaped by traditional Islam, the Javano-Islamic sultanates, and the Javanese culture with its strong Hindu-Buddhist heritage. This region is also home to a vibrant Catholic community whose identity formation has occurred in a way that involves complex engagements with Islam as well as Javanese culture. In this respect, local pilgrimage tradition presents itself as a rich milieu in which these complex engagements have been taking place between Islam, Catholicism, and Javanese culture. Employing a comparative theological and phenomenological analysis, this book reveals the deeper religio-cultural and theological import of pilgrimage practice in the identity formation and interaction among Muslims and Catholics in south central Java. In a wider context, it also sheds light on the larger dynamics of the complex encounter between Islam, Christianity and local cultures.

Weapons are often those objects in museums which most strongly record traumatic histories of colonial conquest around the world, showcase a society’s most complex technologies, and encode a wealth of historical information relating to violent conflict, cultural identities, and indigenous masculinities. This volume brings together an international collective of museum professionals, indigenous cultural historians, anthropologists and material culture specialists to address the historical role of weapon collections in ethnographic museums, and to reconsider the value of studying arms for the purposes of writing richer cultural histories. From Australia to the Amazon, from Uttar Pradesh to ancient Ulster, the essays in this book endeavour to return ethnographic weapons to the centre of material culture studies. In doing so, they offer a blueprint for a more sophisticated future treatment of world weaponry.
