Book Plain Madeleine

Download or read book Plain Madeleine written by Mac Smith and published by Down East Books. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Madeleine and Colonel John Jacob Astor is very much part of the story of Bar Harbor, Maine. The relatively poor Madeleine Force met Colonel Astor, the third richest man in the United States, in Bar Harbor in 1910. The vicious scandal after they're wedding caused the newlyweds to board the Titanic to return to America; the ensuing tragedy would claim the life of the colonel. Madeleine Astor returned to Bar Harbor after the Titanic disaster, where all eyes were on her, and where she was triumphant in claiming the role of social leader. In 1916, she remarried in the center of Bar Harbor, and gave up everything Astor. The story follows the 17 years of her second marriage, and then her scandalous third marriage. Madeleine, now in her 40s, married a penniless young boxer and her name erased from the Social Register after that. She died a lonely figure in her 40s. This new book from historian Mac Smith documents Madeleine's life in Bar Harbor and the Astor presence on Bar Harbor through Colonel Astor's family and the Kane family--Astor cousins who were prominent there. It puts Madeleine Astor's story in the context of Bar Harbor's Golden Age. In telling Madeleine Astor's story, the story of a changing Bar Harbor is also revealed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The circumstances in which this book came to be written are as follows. Some five weeks after the survivors from the Titanic landed in New York, I was the guest at luncheon of Hon. Samuel J. Elder and Hon. Charles T. Gallagher, both well-known lawyers in Boston. After luncheon I was asked to relate to those present the experiences of the survivors in leaving the Titanic and reaching the Carpathia. When I had done so, Mr. Robert Lincoln O'Brien, the editor of the Boston Herald, urged me as a matter of public interest to write a correct history of the Titanic disaster, his reason being that he knew several publications were in preparation by people who had not been present at the disaster, but from newspaper accounts were piecing together a description of it. He said that these publications would probably be erroneous, full of highly coloured details, and generally calculated to disturb public thought on the matter. He was supported in his request by all present, and under this general pressure I accompanied him to Messrs. Houghton Mifflin Company, where we discussed the question of publication. Messrs. Houghton Mifflin Company took at that time exactly the same view that I did, that it was probably not advisable to put on record the Loss of the SS. Titanic, by Lawrence Beesle 4 incidents connected with the Titanic's sinking: it seemed better to forget details as rapidly as possible. However, we decided to take a few days to think about it. At our next meeting we found ourselves in agreement again, --but this time on the common ground that it would probably be a wise thing to write a history of the Titanic disaster as correctly as possible. I was supported in this decision by the fact that a short account, which I wrote at intervals on board the Carpathia, in the hope that it would calm public opinion by stating the truth of what happened as nearly as I could recollect it, appeared in all the American, English, and Colonial papers and had exactly the effect it was i

Download or read book Secrets of the Titanic written by Sam Chase and published by Centennial Books. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believe it or not, researchers are still making new discoveries about the Titanic after more than 100 years! This book is the most visual and most up-to-date chronicle of the famous ship's development, voyage and ultimate tragedy, illustrated with numerous photos and drawings. More than one hundred years after the “unsinkable” Titanic sunk after colliding with an iceberg in the North Atlantic, the tragedy continues to haunt us. That’s partly thanks to the movies—notably James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster, Titanic—that have turned the story into a sort of modern myth. In fact, when it comes to the events of April 15, 1912, untangling fact from fiction has become increasingly difficult. Was the captain drunk? Was the ship going too fast? Did the crew ignore ice warnings? Do the ghosts of the wreck's 1,500-plus victims still haunt the frigid sea? These and other questions are explored—and often answered—here. You will experience the ship’s fateful final day and enter into the glittering lives of such celebrated passengers as John Jacob Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim. You’ll also learn the fascinating stories of its lesser-known travelers: the man who kidnapped his two sons; the movie star who starred in a film about the disaster, and many other unsung souls whose lives were lost—or changed forever—when the ship went down. In the end, you’ll probably agree that (movie myths aside) the truth is much stranger than fiction.

Book excerpt: The sinking of the RMS Titanic on 15 April 1912 is one of the best-remembered, and most-scrutinised, moments of the twentieth century. Yet ever since the disaster, there have been lingering mysteries, questions that seemed utterly impossible to answer. In recent years, a string of allegations have also been made to the effect that the Titanic was suffering from a fire in one of her coal bunkers during the maiden voyage. Then there is the question of the time difference between ship's time and time on shore on the night of the disaster - a complex navigational mystery that has a direct bearing on understanding key aspects of how events played out on that fateful night. Now follow an international and world-renowned team of Titanic and maritime historians and researchers as we attempt to solve two of the most important, and most publicized, mysteries of the Titanic disaster.
