The purpose of the lectures was not-what is normally a proper function of lectures - to excite interest; for the audience was already professionally interested in the theme. Stili less was it - what is rarely legitimate in lectures - to impart detailed information; for the audience was already in possession of excellent text-books. The purpose was the lowly one of reducing a complex and confused century to comprehensible categories, of emphasising its dominant characteristics, of rendering it more readily teachable. In order to achieve this purpose the lecturer divided the century chronologically into half a dozen consecutive periods, and tried to find in each period some single prevailing feature. It is hoped that it may assist in making the leading lines of nineteenth-century history known in the upper classes of schools, in training colleges, in the circles of the Workers' Educational Association and the Home Heading Union, in Y.M.C.A. Institutes, in Army Classes - everywhere, in short, where people of mature intelligence gather for the study of subjects essential to the fulfilment of the functions of citizenship. Nineteenth-century European history is not a topic of education suitable for young children; it is at once too complex, too controversial, and too incompletely determined. The present volume, which is an abridgement of an abridgement, assumes the possession of that knowledge of British, Colonial, and Foreign history which is usual in the case of intelligent students who have attended school at least up to the age of fourteen. Like its predecessors it contains much fuller references to the period since 1870 than the earlier years. Hazen, Europe Since 1815, Schapiro, Modern and Contemporary European History, and the second volume of Hayes, Political and Social History of Modern Europe have been followed in preparing the outline; and references to all these excellent books have been appended to most of the topics. Students should read one or more of these and at least one of the "Additional References" under each special topic. The purpose of the outline is not to provide a brief summary of the facts, predigested mental pabulum, as it were; but to provide a scheme of organization, to suggest to the student what he is to look for as he reads, and to teach him to distinguish between essentials and non-essentials. Hence the facts are not usually stated, but the student is left to work them out from his reference readings. Though the outline and references have been prepared primarily for use in the writer's own classes, it is hoped that they may be useful to other instructors who are using the admirable books on which the outline is based. In the account of the Revolution, the authors have attempted to give a fair and impartial estimate of causes and incidents, and to show the reaction of the other states of Europe against events in France. In the account of the Napoleonic period, they have tried, so far as space permitted, to keep before the reader the general European conditions as these affected, and as they were affected by, the policies of the great Emperor. A feature of special importance is the unusually complete presentation of the more important military operations of the period. Without going into technical details the authors have striven to give an accurate and readable account of the strategy and maneuvers by which the campaigns were won or lost. In the division of work, the authors have followed respectively the lines laid down in their previous book, European History, 1862-1914. The Professor of English and History has undertaken the outline of the political history: the Assistant Professor that of the military campaigns.
