Book excerpt: How do you close a plastic bottle? Just turn the lid until you feel a slight resistance, right? But what if you are really angry when doing it? Or you are someone who is horrified of germs? You might twist the lid too much, expanding or cracking it, which defeats the purpose of the lid. Simply because of your mood or mindset. Now if you extend that example to our interactions with the world, you might start noticing how our views and beliefs, and our moods and behaviours, unravel a cascade of counterintuitive consequences, shaping the world in profound and perplexing ways, with impacts far beyond the immediate moment. "Main Batata Hoon" explores such intricate webs of human views, mindsets and behaviours through a fictional collection of everyday stories in conversational form. From the mundane to the extraordinary, these conversations unravel odd outlooks and curious ways in which we individuals navigate the intricate dance of social dynamics and life. The title is a Hindi line I sometimes use to get a laugh out of people. Because depending on how you say it, it could either mean, ‘I will tell you’, or that, ‘I am a potato’ - highlighting the greys that shape our world. Through a behavioral lens, ‘Main Batata Hoon’ delves into the amusing, thought-provoking, and sometimes bizarre facets of our human nature. Brace yourself for a journey into the unexpected, where our counterintuitiveness reveals the intricate tapestry of the human experience.

Book Beyond Doubt

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Tulika Books
  • Release : 2015-09-02
  • ISBN : 9382381562
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Beyond Doubt written by and published by Tulika Books. This book was released on 2015-09-02 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on 30 January 1948 was a declaration of war and a statement of intent. For the forces who conspired in the killing, the act was a declaration of war against the secular, democratic Indian state and all those who stood to affirm these principles, as well as an announcement of a lasting commitment to India as a ‘Hindu Rashtra’. It was also an act to signal the elimination of all that India’s national movement against imperialism stood for. Beyond Doubt is a dossier of historical and critical documents that aims to contextualize the politics, motivations and circumstances behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Attempts to legitimize the act of killing and to celebrate the killers have re-doubled since May 2014, following the coming to power of the new regime in New Delhi. The time is right, therefore, to set the record straight. The visceral hatred directed against Gandhi and the denigration of everything he stood for need to be recounted if we are to understand the political nature of that dastardly act. This book attempts to weave together archival documents from Government of India records relating to developments after the assassination, with translation of works in Marathi, Gujarati and Hindi de-constructing the ideology responsible for the political killing. While several of the documents have appeared before in issues of Communalism Combat, this compilation presents new material on the subject. The first English translation of Jagan Phadnis’s book, Mahatmyache Akher, forms part of the dossier, as do Y.D. Phadke’s analysis of attempts to legitimize Gandhi’s killing and Chunibhai Vaidya’s analysis of Pradeep Dalvi’s play on Godse. It also covers the recent controversy over the destruction of files relating to Gandhi’s assassination by Government of India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It takes a fearless mind to harbour such a dark heart, a heart that knows no nobility, no apology? Mumbai, April 2012. The gruesome murder of a senior citizen in a wealthy Mumbai neighbourhood leads the city?s Crime Branch to unearth several half-naked, mutilated and dismembered bodies rotting in the ravines of the Western Ghats on the outskirts of the city. A trail of missing suspects, a lethal honey-trap, and unexpected links with Mumbai?s film industry and the underworld, brings the investigators ? and the press, ever hungry for breaking news ? to Vijay Palande, a cold-blooded killer equipped with the sophistication of Charles Sobhraj, the manipulative genius of Ted Bundy and the cruelty of Jack the Ripper. In The Front Page Murders, Puja Changoiwala, who covered the incidents as they unfolded, recounts in gripping detail the story behind the sensational case of multiple murders that shocked the country. Startling and intensely sobering by turns, her compelling narrative explores not just the murky depths of a serial killer?s mind but, tellingly, the media?s frenzy for a juicy story and the insatiable human appetite for horror.

Book Six Minutes of Terror

Download or read book Six Minutes of Terror written by Nazia Sayed and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mumbai 7/11 train bombings in 2006 were one of the deadliest terror attacks the city had seen after the 1993 blast. The attacks orchestrated by the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (the ISI) were aimed to cripple the city by attacking its lifeline—the local train. A series of seven blasts in a span of only six minutes rocked the city at seven railway stations, killing 189 and injuring over 700. Six Minutes of Terror is the first investigative book that will present a blow by blow account of the events that led to the terrorist attack, profile the people involved in the blasts as well as describe how the plot was unearthed by the police. Superbly researched, with painstaking detail, the book tries to delve into the minds of the home-grown terrorists—who created unprecedented havoc and claimed innocent lives—ten years after the horrifying attacks.
