The world has changed, and things are no longer as they used to be. Things must not be normal all the time, otherwise life would not be life." When Emmanuel Kwanga gets a University scholarship, he travels from the lake and hills of Abehema to the Great City. Everyone in the village has invested in him their hopes for the good life. When the life they've imagined is cut short by the University guillotine, Emmanuel Kwanga must struggle to make sense of what the good life means - for himself and for Abehema - in a world where things are no longer as they used to be. This novel is about coming of age and coming to terms in Mimboland. It is also about the fragility of life and the strength of the human spirit. The filth and screaming splendor of the city and the perplexed tranquility of the village are juxtaposed, as the tension and conviviality between tradition and modernity are lived and explored. Roads and drivers, dreams and public transport link different geographies. Faltering along or speeding away, these spaces of risk, frustration and solidarity are filled with popular songs as vehicles for understanding events and relationships. With every crossing of the Pont de Maturit the story flows, and its mysteries surge. In this novel, the worlds of the living and the dead intermingle, as do the natural and the supernatural, the visible and the invisible.

  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Undressing the Maid written by Johanna Valenius and published by Finnish Literature Society. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyses how the imaginary Finnish Maid (Suomi-neito) was used to construct the Finnish nation at the turn of the 20th century. It focuses on gender, femininity and masculinity, sexuality and body as well as on the images of virginity, bridehood and sexual violence. The study argues that Finnish male intellectuals saw the Finnish nation as their female beloved, a potential bride, but that they did not get her and the Finnish Maid remained an eternal virgin. In addition, the Finnish Maid was seen as being raped by the Russians. The materials analysed in this study consist of caricatures, poems and national monuments.

Download or read book The Sauna Is Full of Maids written by Cheryl Fish and published by Shanti Arts LLC. This book was released on 2021-06-20 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cheryl J. Fish first visited Finland as a Fulbright professor in 2007. Since then she has returned many times to research protest and resistance to mining and extraction in Arctic Fennoscandia in the works of Sami filmmakers, photographers, and artists. However, the landscapes and experiences of the country's saunas, lakes, villages, homes, streets, and parks evoked rich stories and poetry. This unique collection of poems, The Sauna Is Full of Maids, is a reflection on how present-day Finnish life intertwines with folklore and mythology-expressed in the Kalevala, a work of epic poetry compiled from long-lived ballads, songs, and incantations-and advancing modern developments. Accompanied by many of the poet's own photographs, this collection has the kind of rich cultural detail that warms and satisfies the reader with insight and appreciation.

Book Visions of the Maid

Download or read book Visions of the Maid written by Robin Blaetz and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2001-11-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of Joan of Arc have been used in the United States for the past two hundred years, appearing in advertising, cartoons, popular song, art, criticism, and propaganda. The presence of the fifteenth-century French heroine in the cinema is particularly intriguing in relation to the role of women during wartime. Robin Blaetz argues that a mythic Joan of Arc was used during the First World War to cast a medieval glow over an unpopular war, but that she only appeared after the Second World War to encourage women to abandon their wartime jobs and return to the home. In Visions of the Maid, Blaetz examines three pivotal films—Cecil B. DeMille's 1916 Joan the Woman, Victor Fleming's 1948 Joan of Arc, and Otto Preminger's 1957 Saint Joan—as well as addressing a broad array of popular culture references and every other film about the heroine made or distributed in the United States. Blaetz is particularly concerned with issues of gender and the ways in which Joan of Arc's androgyny, virginity, and sacrificial victimhood were evoked in relation to the evolving roles of women during war throughout the twentieth century.
