Book excerpt: The aim of this research was twofold: understanding the methods of patterning magnetic films using self-assembled block copolymer masks and examining the magnetic reversal mechanisms of as deposited and patterned magnetic films. Ti / Co 66 at. % Cr 22 at. % Pt 12 at. % (CoCrPt) films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were deposited on silicon wafers by UHV sputtering. Ti was used as an adhesion layer and texture promoter so that the easy magnetic axis of Co is aligned perpendicular to the sample plane. Magnetic reversal of Ti/CoCrPt films and Ti/CoCrPt/Ti/CoCrPt pseudo spin valve films is a domain nucleation and growth process with a slow time-dependent magnetization reversal which was attributed to growth of reverse domains. The films were patterned into nanosized islands by block copolymer lithography using self assembled polystyrene-polyferrocenyldimethylsilane (PS-PFS) as a mask. The islands reverse their magnetization in a coherent and independent fashion (StonerWohlfarth reversal), in contrast to the continuous film. Micromagnetic simulation confirmed the coherent reversal of the thicker islands. Two graphoepitaxy methods were examined for inducing long range order (LRO) in block copolymers. Nanoimprint lithography with in-situ annealing was successful in guiding the self assembly of the block copolymers in the grooves, however, no LRO was achieved. Selectively removable polymeric templates fabricated out of BARL-i@ anti reflection coating guide the self-assembly of PFS domains with good LRO and very few defects over a large area. The ordered arrays were then transferred into silica and W, forming an ordered array of cp-packed W islands with period of 29 nm and island diameter of 17 nm. Transfer of the pattern into CoCrPt is difficult due to the nonselective ion beam etching process.

Book excerpt: Nanoscale magnetic dot arrays have attracted considerable interest, both for fundamental studies of micromagnetism and for possible applications in high-density magnetic data storage. Self-assembled block copolymers provide an alternative nanolithography technique to fabricate large-area nanomagnet arrays. Block copolymer thin films that micro-phase separate into periodic domains can be used as templates to define arrays of close-packed nanostructure, using a series of etching steps. Using polystyrene-polyferrocenyldimethyl-silane (PS-PFS), large-area polymer dots, silica dots and magnetic dots with periods of 56 nm were made using a series of plasma etching steps. Magnetometry techniques are used to characterize the bulk magnetic behavior of the dot arrays of Co, NiFe and pseudo spin valve structures. These dot arrays show strong magnetostatic interaction between the dots and within the dots. The self-assembly process is simple and low cost, however, the block copolymers typically have uncontrolled defects and lack long-range order. A topographically patterned substrate is used to guide the phase-separation in a subsequently deposited block copolymer film. The lateral dimensions of the patterns in the substrates, and interfacial interactions, are key factors in the ordering mechanism. Well-ordered block copolymer structures can be achieved under proper confinement conditions. In addition, the position of the polymer microdomains and defects in the array such as dislocations can be purposefully controlled by the design of the topographical guiding features. Combining topographic confinement with block copolymer lithographic methods will enable large-area ordered functional dot arrays to be made for various applications.

Book excerpt: The tendency of PS-b-PDMS to phase separate, the tunability of the resulting morphology and the sufficient etch contrast between PS and PDMS makes the block copolymer ideal for creating patterns that can be transferred onto magnetic media. The aim of this study was to determine optimal BCP film thicknesses that produce spherical micro-domains with long range order on a Co substrate brushed with PS-OH and to transfer this pattern onto the underlying Co. Thin films of PS-b-PDMS were spun-cast onto Co substrates brushed with PS-OH, solvent annealed and consequently etched in a series of steps that removed one constituent polymer at a time. Patterns with periods between 36-39nm and with great long-range order were observed for BCP film thicknesses in the 32-35 nm range and successful transfer of the pattern onto Co film was achieved, resulting in fabrication of nanoscale, discrete domains.
