Download or read book Magical Medicine written by Wayland D. Hand and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Distilling baby's first tear into the eye of a blind man to make him see"; "Plucking herbs upward for emetics and downward for purgatives"; "Stroking one's goiter with a dead man's hand to make the growth shrivel away"--these are not beliefs and customs found among primitive peoples in remote parts of the world but are examples of hundreds of items of magical medicine found in Professor Hand's remarkable collection of essays dealing with this neglected field in twentieth-century Europe and America. Fantasy and imagination still have free reign in people's lives, more than any of us will admit. In a time when science is preeminent, irrational thinking ca lay hold on the mid of man as much as in olden times. Folk medicine has expanded in recent years to include holistic medicine and other forms of alternative medicine, but little attention has been paid to magical medicine. Despite the benefits of medical science in an advance culture, the magical medicine of Europe and America has clung to an unusually rich and original body of magical lore that lies at the base of its folk medical thought. Ethnomedicine in the inner cities of America can be better understood by practitioners who know something about folk medicine and, especially, if they kno some of the basics of magical medicine. Download or read book The Six written by Frank Alessandra and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Six: A Story about Boys, Laughter, and a Lifelong Friendship is a feel-good memoir about an unforgettable group of high school buddies and their antic-filled coming of age in the 1980s. Frank Alessandra's hilarious stories of youth and camaraderie accurately speak to the less expressive bonds and support structure of male friendship. But even though male friends may not be comfortable openly sharing troubles the way women do, hidden beneath the surface of these fun-filled tales is a heartwarming connection between six boys, as they rely on one another to get through the trials and tribulations of growing into young men. Along this journey, they confront real problems: shattered dreams, deep regrets, heartbreak, and racism. Whenever life presented such a challenge, The Six rallied, and over time, they realize that what they share is about more than just the laughs. In the end, the grown men understand why it is they hang on to each other and the priceless support their thirty-year friendship still provides. "Good male friendships started in childhood can last a lifetime and sustain a man in his later years." - Dr. Geoffrey Greif, University of Maryland School of Social Work "Male friendship can provide support, strengthen identity, and offer meaningful companionship. It's certainly something worth the effort for men to develop and maintain in their lives." - Peter M. Nardi, Ph.D., Sociology, Pitzer College. For more than 20 years, Frank Alessandra has relied on an annual get-together with five childhood buddies to soothe the stresses of adult life. Together, the men reminisce about hilarious events from their younger days. A sentimental desire to share these stories of youth and innocence inspired Alessandra to uncover a passion for storytelling through writing. A financial analyst by trade, he graduated with honors from Moravian College and received an MBA with honors from Lehigh University. He lives in Flemington, New Jersey, and has two teenaged daughters, Alyssa and Jennifer.

Download or read book High School Prom written by Ann Anderson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prom has been a fixture in the life of American teenagers for as long as high schools have existed. Both encapsulating and magnifying the drama of adolescence, proms have been transformed from modest tea dances to costly extravaganzas supporting apparel and cosmetic makers, limousine services, hotels, magazine publishers, and hair salons. Focusing on social and economic trends, this volume examines the evolution of the prom, the development of the billion-dollar prom industry, and the event's place in popular culture, including its portrayal in film, television, and literature. Using the prom as a lens through which to view many aspects of American culture--money, sex, fashion, dance, music, television, transportation, communication, and even war--this work offers a fresh perspective on the history of American youth. Book excerpt: With its clever snark and searing perspective, Cancelled is a funny, fearless novel about the realistic pitfalls and unforgettable moments high school has to offer, perfect for fans of Jenny Han and Emma Lord. Not to brag, but Brynn Whittaker is basically killing her senior year. She's got the looks, the grades, and a thriving "flirt coach" business that will help pay for her ultimate dream school: Stanford University. But when a highly incriminating video goes viral after the first rager of the year, Brynn finds herself at the center of a school-wide scandal of catastrophic proportions. She knows she's not the girl in the video hooking up with her former best friend's boyfriend (While wearing a banana costume, no less. Hey, points for style), but adding that to her reputation of being a serial dater, she quickly starts losing friends and customers. On top of that, the scorn she receives exposes the culture of misogyny that is rampant at her school . . . and Brynn and her three best friends are determined to take down all the haters. But as she gets closer to identifying the person in the video that got her cancelled, Brynn must decide—is exposing the girl worth losing everything she's worked so hard for? This witty, unapologetic novel by Farrah Penn boldly tackles the problematic double standards that seek to bring girls down, and shines a light on the loving, uplifting friendships that can help them make it through those brutal four years.

Download or read book Unstuck in Time written by Gregory D. Sumner and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Unstuck in Time, Gregory Sumner guides us, with insight and passion, through a biography of fifteen of Kurt Vonnegut’s best known works, his fourteen novels starting with Player Piano (1952) all the way to an epilogue on his last book, A Man Without a Country (2005), to illustrate the quintessential American writer’s profound engagement with the "American Dream" in its various forms. Sumner gives us a poignant portrait of Vonnegut and his resistance to celebrating the traditional values associated with the American Dream: grandiose ambition, unbridled material success, rugged individualism, and "winners" over "losers." Instead of a celebration of these values, we read and share Vonnegut’s outrage, his brokenhearted empathy for those who struggle under the ethos of survival-of-the-fittest in the frontier mentality—something he once memorably described as "an impossibly tough-minded experiment in loneliness." Heroic and tragic, Vonnegut’s novels reflect the pain of his own life’s experiences, relieved by small acts of kindness, friendship, and love that exemplify another way of living, another sort of human utopia, an alternative American Dream, and the reason we always return to his books.
