Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen-year-old David Dolephene has always been fascinated by pirates. Shy and withdrawn, he finds refuge in tales of adventure on the high seas. He gets a little more adventure than he bargained for, however, when he discovers a connection between his family and a man known as the Dolphin, captain of one of the most dangerous pirate ships of the 1600s. Within days, David finds himself on the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands, where he comes into possession of the Dolphin's journal. The journal contains mysterious clues that could lead to hidden treasure. But he has also inherited a mortal enemy who wants only two things: the treasure, and the end of his family's line. About the Author Sean Patrick O'Mordha has been a storyteller since he could walk. He found a lot of satisfaction working as a newspaper journalist in college, but no money, so he obtained a degree in criminal justice and constitutional law and became a law enforcement officer. This career path eventually led him to work as a lead federal enforcement officer and investigator, and he was often called to prosecute cases. During this time he wrote articles for national and international police journals. Upon retirement, Sean changed direction and began concentrating on writing fiction. His Pirate Legacy series begins with this book. Future books in the series continue David's story, juxtaposed with tales of the Dolphin.

Book excerpt: Julie Marie Todd, educator, activist, journalizer, and theologian, shares 50 of her writings. Most pieces are in a poetic prose style - a predominantly long-form, stream-of-consciousness writing from journal entries and writing groups - alongside a few lengthier prose essays and previously published works. The author explores her own inner emotional terrain and spirituality and how life in both solitude and community generates creativity, vulnerability, and change. She shares much of her journey from life as an institutional church leader to a wider embrace of spiritual leadership beyond hierarchy and traditional religion. From sweet odes to plant life to encounters with ancestors, from confessions of addiction and abortion to body love and self-hatred, from ongoing self-examination of the author's own complicity in white, Christian supremacy to rants against racism and heteropatriarchy, many readers will find Julie's writing compelling, provocative, and relatable.

Book Beauty and Misogyny

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sheila Jeffreys
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-12-03
  • ISBN : 1317675444
  • Pages : 214 pages

Download or read book Beauty and Misogyny written by Sheila Jeffreys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of Beauty and Misogyny revisits and updates Sheila Jeffreys' uncompromising critique of Western beauty practice and the industries and ideologies behind it. Jeffreys argues that beauty practices are not related to individual female choice or creative expression, but represent instead an important aspect of women's oppression. As these practices have become increasingly brutal and pervasive, the need to scrutinize and dismantle them is if anything more urgent now as it was in 2005 when the first edition of the book was published. The United Nations concept of "harmful traditional/cultural practices" provides a useful lens for the author to advance her critique. She makes the case for including Western beauty practices within this definition, examining their role in damaging women's health, creating sexual difference and enforcing female deference. First-wave feminists of the 1970s criticized pervasive beauty regimes such as dieting and depilation, but a later argument took hold that beauty practices were no longer oppressive now that women could "choose" them. In recent years the reality of Western beauty practices has become much more bloody and severe, requiring the breaking of skin and the rearrangement or amputation of body parts. Beauty and Misogyny seeks to make sense of why beauty practices have not only persisted but become more extreme. It examines the pervasive use of makeup, the misogyny of fashion and high-heeled shoes, and looks at the role of pornography in the creation of increasingly popular beauty practices such as breast implants, genital waxing, surgical alteration of the labia and other forms of self-mutilation. The book concludes by considering how a culture of resistance to these practices can be created. A new and thoroughly updated edition of this essential work will appeal to all levels of students and teachers of gender studies, cultural studies and feminist psychology, and to anyone with an interest in feminism, women and beauty, and women's health.

  • Author : Marsha de la O
  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2024-01-09
  • ISBN : 0822990296
  • Pages : 111 pages

Download or read book Creature written by Marsha de la O and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written during the last five years of the poet’s father’s life, Creature is a book about love, destruction, and the self, all standing in relation to family and the natural world. The poems themselves try to move toward what can’t be said by finding connection with other life forms: hawks, hummingbirds, pelicans, lizards, horses, ravens, squid. By moving past linguistic walls into otherness, words become proximate to mystery and inhabit territory where expanses open and embodiment is always on the verge of transformation.
