Book excerpt: Cody and Carolyn Redford enjoy a carefree lifestyle in Kent County, with friends Gavin and Melanie Maynard. In Cornwall, the Redfords encounter a soothsayer predicting a bleak future for mankind. The foursome then notes some unexplained changes in the behaviour of wild animals and migrating birds, giving credence to the prediction. When a terrorist outrage in South Africa leads to further major atrocities in Israel and India, détente finally fails. Global nuclear war is sparked off by an unforeseen source, resulting in the superpowers exchanging H-bomb punches like drunken boxers. In the midst of survival, Cody Redford becomes aware of the artificial insemination and incubation (AI2) programme, an initiative hatched in the Cold War years to store the sperm of prominent scientists with the objective of using surrogate hosts to factory farm children in a post-holocaust world. Though appalled, nonetheless, he resigns himself to supporting the programme, unaware of the significant down the road consequences to the nature of human life.

Book excerpt: At times hilarious, at other times thoughtful, this book is more than an account of a family which goes to live on a farm. The events described here took the Sherry’s deep into a terra incognita of the spirit as well as the land. It is that quality: the sense of adventure and of patterns being broken which gives Maggie’s Farm a flavor all its own.

Book excerpt: The kitchen was the center of the old home place, as any of you who ever visited there would remember. It has a special place in my heart because it was my first home. Mom was finishing her last year at Bethel and Dad was away in the war. My babysitters were my young aunts Barbara, June and Shirley. Memories only come years later when I would visit for Sunday dinners which we all have great memories of I am sure. One special memory I have of Grandmother was when I would go into the busy kitchen and ask what they were cooking, she would answer, "layovers to catch meddlers". That was her sense of humor. Baking seemed to be the specialty of the Hart family. I think all of us have enough recipes to make separate cookbooks from our mom's recipes. Here are Grandmother Hart's recipes written in her own handwriting. I must comment here that each day as I looked at, read and scanned her recipes, I was struck by the sweet aroma of spices of all kinds that had soaked into the paper, straight from her kitchen. A complete and joyful surprise!Hope you enjoy reading them.Larry Coffin, EditorChiangrai, ThailandNovember, 2015Special Thanks to Steve Coffin for providing personal data and and Debbie Vickers Brown for providing the recipes.

Book excerpt: Goat Cheese combines the recipes for foods you love with the natural goodness of goat cheese and goat's milk. With over 70 delicious recipes for appetizers, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, there is always time for Goat Cheese. Once you've tried the Sweet Ricotta Pancakes topped with bananas and strawberries, Cherry Oatmeal Scones with chevre or fromage blanc, Lamb Tenderloins stuffed with eggplant and feta, or the Espresso Cheesecake Brownie, you will forget that cows even exist! Maggie Foard studied horticulture at the City College of San Francisco (CCSF), but she wasn't introduced to fresh goat cheese until she went on a school field trip ten years ago with her son to the local goat farm. She simply fell in love with not only goat cheese but the whole goat farm! Incorporating goat cheese and other goat dairy into cooking was just a natural consequence, since she was already an avid chef. Maggie lives on twelve acres in rural San Mateo County of California, with her husband, Jim, and their teenage son, Eric. She raises her own chickens for eggs and has dogs, cats, goats, ducks, peacocks, and a rooster.

Book Our Black Year

Download or read book Our Black Year written by Maggie Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maggie and John Anderson were successful African American professionals raising two daughters in a tony suburb of Chicago. But they felt uneasy over their good fortune. Most African Americans live in economically starved neighborhoods. Black wealth is about one tenth of white wealth, and black businesses lag behind businesses of all other racial groups in every measure of success. One problem is that black consumers--unlike consumers of other ethnicities-- choose not to support black-ownedbusinesses. At the same time, most of the businesses in their communities are owned by outsiders. On January 1, 2009 the Andersons embarked on a year-long public pledge to "buy black." They thought that by taking a stand, the black community would be mobilized to exert its economic might. They thought that by exposing the issues, Americans of all races would see that economically empowering black neighborhoods benefits society as a whole. Instead, blacks refused to support their own, and others condemned their experiment. Drawing on economic research and social history as well as her personal story, Maggie Anderson shows why the black economy continues to suffer and issues a call to action to all of us to do our part to reverse this trend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recipes and techniques that one mother used to turn a year of her son’s military service in Iraq into a year of care packages brimming with cookies. Single mother Maggie McCreath couldn’t decide which was worse: the fact that her only son (not yet twenty-one) was off to war in Iraq for the second time or the fact that they had only five days to prepare. Even more frightening, she knew that he would be part of the Surge and, as a paratrooper in the 82nd Division of the Army, the tip of the Spear. What she did not know—what she couldn’t even bear to consider—was how this deployment would end, both for her son and for his brothers in arms, whom she had come to know and love as her own. So she turned to the one pastime that had always brought her solace: baking. Filled with delicious, original cookie recipes, 52 Weeks of Cookies recounts a mom’s unique methods of coping during her son’s deployment. With plenty of sugar cookies but no sugarcoating, 52 Weeks of Cookies is an honest, uplifting story of family love during a crisis, with all the fear, grief, laughter, gratitude, and joy that come with it. “When her 20-year-old son was deployed to Iraq with just a few days’ notice, Maggie McCreath desperately searched for her own mission to cope with the worry. She found it with the help of flour, sugar, vanilla and lots of love.” —Today
