Book excerpt: The epic tale of the five owners who shepherded the NFL through its tumultuous early decades and built the most popular sport in America The National Football League is a towering, distinctly American colossus spewing out $14 billion in annual revenue. But it was not always a success. In The League, John Eisenberg focuses on the pioneering sportsmen who kept the league alive in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, when its challenges were many and its survival was not guaranteed. At the time, college football, baseball, boxing, and horseracing dominated America's sports scene. Art Rooney, George Halas, Tim Mara, George Preston Marshall, and Bert Bell believed in pro football when few others did and ultimately succeeded only because at critical junctures each sacrificed the short-term success of his team for the longer-term good of the league. At once a history of a sport and a remarkable story of business ingenuity, The League is an essential read for any fan of our true national pastime.

Book excerpt: This is a self help book on how to teach yourself to control and in fact stop "your " use of Tobacco in any form once and for all. The author is a 59-year-old male who smoked 1 pack of Cigarettes each day for 22 years. That's 7300 cigarettes per year or in his case it was 160,600 cigarettes for 22 years. That's enough to make anyone sick and certainly has. From the age of 16 to 38 he always knew that one day he would eventually want to stop smoking and find a way to regain control of his life with respects to his one pack a day habit. While driving a truck in the middle of his normal work day back in the summer of 1986, he experienced some sudden fluttering in his chest and dizziness. Because he felt instant fear and out of control over this unexplained feeling he quickly made an appointment to see a cardiologist for a complete physical. Upon completion of his physical with his Doctor he was told he was very fit and in fine shape for a young man at 36 but that by the time he was 45 he could experience some real problems as he already had a wheeze. Even though there is no history of heart problems in his family being of Italian decent, and longevity was well established with parents who lived to almost 90 and grand parents who made it to 95 and 100, his concerns grew. He felt threatened by the thought of heart trouble from smoking because he once witnessed two men die right before his eyes from heart attack, and both men happen to be heavy smokers. His fears began to take their toll rapidly with the doctor's simply advice to "QUIT SMOKING NOW."

Book excerpt: This is the first full-length biography of Kid Nichols (1869-1953), who won 30 or more games a record seven times and was the youngest pitcher to reach 300 career victories. Much new light is shed on Nichols' early life in Madison, Wisconsin, along with important influences and experiences as a teenager living in Kansas City. Nichols' professional career is documented by drawing heavily from publications of the era and his own words. The high regard in which he was held by fans, teammates and even opponents is contrasted with his contentious relationship with team owners. Nichols' period of restlessness, ambition and risk-taking following his long stint with Boston's National League team is detailed, as is the campaign to get him into the Hall of Fame. The book includes previously unpublished photos from his descendants' archives, many more than a century old.

Book Batting Cleanup Bill Conlin

Download or read book Batting Cleanup Bill Conlin written by Bill Conlin and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over three decades Bill Conlin has anchored one of America's best sports sections: the back pages of thePhiladelphia Daily News.Conlin has spent his entire career in Philadelphia, starting with thePhiladelphia Bulletinbut he is probably best known for his tremendous contribution to thePhiladelphia Daily News. This sassy tabloid combines sharp reporting with lively opinion writing, provocative headlines, and its irreverent voice as a self-styled "People Paper." Its sports section, in particular, bristles with what Philadelphians call "atty-tude.""Batting Cleanup, Bill Conlin"is a collection of his best sports writing. From behind the scenes, Conlin presents athletes as all too human but his descriptions of game action convey the magnitude of the athletes' talent, and the demands of the sport itself. His writing is widely appreciated for the way it captures an intricate moment of baseball time through a series of sharp images and dynamic verbs. In making the selections for this volume, editor Kevin Kerrane reveals how Conlin's playfulness with language and ideas led to creative nicknames —like "The Jowly Grim Giant" for Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson—and to entire stories based on outrageous premises. Who else would report a baseball game from the viewpoint of a space alien? Who else would interview God to find out what He really thinks about Randall Cunningham? Conlin's columns deal with just about everything. Or maybe it just seems that way because he brings just about everything to bear on a topic that interests him: lessons from military history, characters from Shakespeare, personal experiences, persistent reporting, amusing one-liners, and laugh-out-loud jokes. His "King of the World" columns offer a fantasy of poetic justice in which fools and knaves are skewered, but with humor rather than heavy-handed moralizing. This humor, insight, keen intelligence, and a true love of sport has made Conlin a cult figure among sports fans. Kerrane explains such admiration this way: "It's not just because of Conlin's fierce honesty, or broad curiosity, or Irish wit, it's also because of his deep feeling for the values of sport—which baseball, in his telling, crystallizes so beautifully." Author note:Kevin Kerraneis Professor of English at the University of Delaware, Newark.
