Madison County is also the birthplace of John Wayne and the home of the picturesque Covered Bridges, the locale for the popular Bridges of Madison County by Robert Waller. Madison County Cookbook is an effort spearheaded by the members of St. Joseph's Parish and friends in Madison County, offering a unique look at a small community where the simple values of faith, family, and friends have not been forgotten. Madison County Cookbook was written to celebrate food, families, friends, and festivals. Here you will find recipes that are family favorites reflective of the heartland, an amalgam of different nationalities which have been passed down from one generation to another and evoke warm and happy memories when served to family and special guests. Over five hundred different recipes are featured, often with a story behind them. Many are old fashioned down-home country recipes starting from scratch; others come from ethnic backgrounds. A wide spectrum is included: applesauce cake to marinade for pork chops, meatless main dishes, decadent desserts, homemade breads...many of them used in family festivals and on holidays. Download or read book Kentucky s Cookbook Heritage written by John van Willigen and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food is a significant part of our daily lives and can be one of the most telling records of a time and place. Our meals—from what we eat, to how we prepare it, to how we consume it—illuminate our culture and history. As a result, cookbooks present a unique opportunity to analyze changing foodways and can yield surprising discoveries about society's tastes and priorities. In Kentucky's Cookbook Heritage, John van Willigen explores the state's history through its changing food culture, beginning with Lettice Bryan's The Kentucky Housewife (originally published in 1839). Considered one of the earliest regional cookbooks, The Kentucky Housewife includes pre–Civil War recipes intended for use by a household staff instead of an individual cook, along with instructions for serving the family. Van Willigen also shares the story of the original Aunt Jemima—the advertising persona of Nancy Green, born in Montgomery County, Kentucky—who was one of many African American voices in Kentucky culinary history. Kentucky's Cookbook Heritage is a journey through the history of the commonwealth, showcasing the shifting priorities and innovations of the times. Analyzing the historical importance of a wide range of publications, from the nonprofit and charity cookbooks that flourished at the end of the twentieth century to the contemporary cookbook that emphasizes local ingredients, van Willigen provides a valuable perspective on the state's social history.

Download or read book Building Blocks of Society written by James W. Cortada and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of information is a rapidly emerging new subfield of history. Historians are identifying the issues they need to examine, crafting novel research agendas, and locating research materials relevant to their work. Like the larger world around them, historians are discovering what it means to live and work in a world that increasingly sees itself as an information society. Long a discussion point among sociologists, economists, political leaders, and media experts, historians are integrating their methods and research into the larger conversation. The purpose of this book is to advocate for a way to look at the history of information and to history as a whole that is simultaneously relevant to observers in other disciplines and familiar to historians of business, economics, sociology and technology. The author presents that advocacy in two ways: with theoretical and historiographical discussions of what information ecosystems and infrastructures are and their value for this kind of research, second, through a range of case studies applying those concepts. The wide range of case studies is purposeful in demonstrating the applicability of the ideas presented in the early methodological chapters. Themes mentioned in each of the early chapters are consistently applied in all subsequent chapters. This book breaks from the more traditional historiography of book history, sociological and philosophical discussions about knowledge and society. The first two chapters focus on the craft of the historian in this new field, better known as historiography and methods. Subsequent chapters are case studies, showing what results when a historian writes about ecosystems and infrastructures, moving our discussion from theory to practice. The book is an important and substantive contribution to this new subfield, an essential primer, as well as a major statement for all historians on how next to evolve their craft.
