Book excerpt: Playwright and screenwriter Martin Sherman dramatizes outsiders--gay, female, foreign, disabled, different in religion, class or color--skipping over quicksand as they strive to survive. This book analyzes and evaluates Sherman's work, while correcting previously published errors and establishing the flavor of the critical debate. Devoting more attention to such internationally acclaimed works as Bent and Mrs. Henderson Presents, it also considers less well known and even unpublished and unproduced scripts as well as his working relationships with the luminaries of stage and screen who have appeared in, directed, and produced his plays and screenplays.

Download or read book International Courts and the Development of International Law written by Nerina Boschiero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of essays by leading experts linked to the outstanding characteristics of the scholar in honour of whom it is published, Tullio Treves, who combines his academic background with his practical experiences of a negotiator of international treaties and a judge of an international tribunal. It covers international public and private law related to international courts and the development of international law. Under Article 38 of its Statute, the International Court of Justice can apply judicial decisions only as a “subsidiary means for the determination of rules of law”. However, there are many reasons to believe that international courts and tribunals do play quite an important role in the progressive development of international law. There are a number of decisions which are inevitably recalled as the first step, or a decisive step, in the process of the formation of a new rule of customary international law. In these cases, can the judge be considered as a subsidiary of others? Are these cases compatible with the common belief that a judge cannot create law? Is this a peculiarity of international law, which is characterized by the existence of several courts but the lack of a legislator? Do decisions by different courts lead to the consequence of a fragmented international law? This volume provides the reader with an elaboration of various questions linked to the legislative role of courts. In their choices of subjects, some contributors have taken into account the general aspects of the development of international rules through court decisions or specific sectors of international law, such as human rights, international crimes, international economic law, environmental law and the law of the sea. Others have chosen the subject of the rules on jurisdiction and procedure of international courts. The question of the courts’ role in the development of areas of law different from public international law, namely private international law and European Union law, has also been considered. The information and views contained in this book will be of great value to academics, students, judges, practitioners and all others interested in the public and private international law aspects of the link between international courts and the development of international law.

Download or read book Elections and the Media in Post Conflict Africa written by Marie-Soleil Frere and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Chad, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo and Rwanda all organized pluralist elections in a post conflict context, having experienced an armed conflict which either interrupted or prevented democratization processes. These polls were organized with the support of the international community, which viewed them as a crucial step in the peace-building process. The local media's role throughout was supposed to be to ensure that an electoral process is actually 'free and fair' - a role that becomes even more crucial in countries where the media have previously being perceived as warmongers or peace-builders in the conflicts. Giving a voice to African journalists and analysing the work they have been publishing or broadcasting during these elections, African media specialist Marie-Soleil Frere explores if and how the local media fulfilled their duties. In doing so, the book reveals journalists' professional challenges at a time when much is expected from the media, as well as the intense political pressure faced that can make their work particularly difficult. Insightful and comprehensive, Elections and the Media in Post-Conflict Africa underlines both the importance and the fragility of the role of the media in a democratic system.
Download or read book The Centrality of Religion in Social Life written by Eileen Barker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James A. Beckford's work is internationally acclaimed not only in the sociology of religion, but also in other fields of the social sciences. Beckford has long been arguing that the barriers that have grown up between the different sub-disciplines should be broken down, with those specialising in religion becoming more cognisant of new theoretical developments, and sociologists in general becoming more aware of the significance of developments in the religious scene. This book is a collection of essays written in Beckford's honour, drawing on a number of religious themes that have been central to Beckford's interests, whilst also offering a significant contribution to our understanding of the wider society. A central theme is modernity (and its relation to the post-modern), and how religion affects and is affected by the dynamics of contemporary society, with the primary focus of many of the chapters being a concern with how society copes with the minority religions that have become visible with the globalising tendencies of contemporary society. The contributors, who come from America, Asia and various parts of Europe, are all internationally renowned scholars. Beckford's most important publications are listed in an Appendix and the volume opens with a short account of his contribution to sociology by Eileen Barker (the editor) and James T. Richardson.
Download or read book Charity Crossing Borders written by Sabine Heidenbauer and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the European Union, national income tax systems support charitable activities by way of preferential treatment. However, a number of Member States operate relief regimes which appear to trigger the question of compatibility with Union law with respect to the fundamental freedoms. In this first study to examine charity and donor taxation regimes across a wide range of Member States, the author focuses on compatibility with EU non-discrimination law. She examines twenty national regimes, both comparatively and from the perspective of overarching EU law. The countries covered are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Although charity and donor taxation falls within the competence of the Member States, they must nonetheless observe primary Union law and grant non-discriminatory treatment where a fact pattern falls within the ambit of the fundamental freedoms. In the course of defining this framework, the study addresses such issues as the following: types of relief schemes maintained for charities and donors; administrative requirements; international aspects (both inbound and outbound); privileged donations and capital gains treatment of in-kind donations; eligible donees; whether and to what extent charitable entities and donors can actually rely on the fundamental freedoms; specific applicability of each of the relevant fundamental freedoms; the issue of comparability; justifications for restrictive measures in Member State practice; and the issue of proportionality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering work provides in-depth coverage of 76 horror films produced in Australia, where serial killers, carnivorous animals, mutants, zombies, vampires and evil spirits all receive the "antipodean" cinematic treatment unique to the Land Down Under. Titles covered were released between 1973 and 2010, a period coinciding with the revival of the long-dormant Australian film industry in the early 1970s, and continuing into the second wave of genre production spurred by the international success of the 2005 chiller Wolf Creek. The Cars That Ate Paris, The Last Wave, Roadgames, Razorback, Outback Vampires, Queen of the Damned, Black Water, and The Reef are among the titles represented. Each film is covered in a chapter that includes a cast and credits list, release information, contemporary reviews and DVD availability, as well as a synopsis and in-depth notes about the story, filmmaking techniques, acting performances, recurring themes and motifs, and overall effectiveness of the film as a work of horror.
