Book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days

Download or read book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days written by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book was released on 2024-10-29 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three volumes of Saints tell the story of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Joseph Smith’s First Vision to the dedication of the first temple outside North America. Now, the fourth volume carries the story to the present day, recounting the Church’s astounding growth and inspired development since 1955. As the book opens, the Church has nine temples and more than one million members. Thousands of missionaries are preaching the restored gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world. And for the first time in history, sacred saving ordinances are available in multiple languages. But the work of the Lord is not yet done. While many nations, kindreds, tongues, and people thirst for restored truth, the world is troubled by war, civil unrest, sickness, hunger, and prejudice. The Latter-day Saints, too, have much to learn about each other as the Church spreads far and wide, welcoming people from many cultures and traditions. The Lord’s command to “be one” has never been more vital—or more challenging—for His people to follow. Sounded in Every Ear is the final book in Saints, a new, four-volume narrative history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fast-paced, meticulously researched, and written under the direction of the First Presidency, Saints recounts true stories of Latter-day Saints across the globe and answers the Lord’s call to write a history “for the good of the church, and for the rising generations” (Doctrine and Covenants 69:8).

Book The Red Brush

Download or read book The Red Brush written by Wilt L. Idema and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 958 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most exciting recent developments in the study of Chinese literature has been the rediscovery of an extremely rich and diverse tradition of women’s writing of the imperial period (221 B.C.E.–1911 C.E.). Many of these writings are of considerable literary quality. Others provide us with moving insights into the lives and feelings of a surprisingly diverse group of women living in Confucian China, a society that perhaps more than any other is known for its patriarchal tradition. Because of the burgeoning interest in the study of both premodern and modern women in China, several scholarly books, articles, and even anthologies of women’s poetry have been published in the last two decades. This anthology differs from previous works by offering a glimpse of women’s writings not only in poetry but in other genres as well, including essays and letters, drama, religious writing, and narrative fiction. The authors have presented the selections within their respective biographical and historical contexts. This comprehensive approach helps to clarify traditional Chinese ideas on the nature and function of literature as well as on the role of the woman writer."

Book The Chinese Virago

Download or read book The Chinese Virago written by Yenna Wu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from a broad array of literary, historical, dramatic and anecdotal sources, Yenna Wu makes a rich exploration of an unusually prominent theme in premodern Chinese prose fiction and drama: that of jealous and belligerent wives, or viragos, who dominate their husbands and abuse other women. Focusing on Chinese literary works from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, she presents many colorful perspectives on this type of aggression, reviewing early literary and historical examples of the phenomenon. Wu argues that although the various portraits of the virago often reveal the writers' insecurities about strong-willed women in general, the authors also satirize the kind of man whose behavioral patterns have been catalysts for female aggression. She also shows that, while the women in these works are to some extent male constructs designed to affirm the patriarchal system, various elements of these portraits constitute a subversive form of parody that casts a revealing light on the patriarchal hierarchy of premodern China.
