Book Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena Proceedings Of The Workshop

Download or read book Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena Proceedings Of The Workshop written by Terence D Clark and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1990-12-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroscopic quantum phenomena (MQP) occur in a number of different systems. The majority of MQP research is done with electromagnetic circuits. The occurrence of MQP in alternative systems, the effects of the environment on MQP, the implications of MQP for measurement theory and quantum mechanics are discussed. This proceedings should therefore provide a nice balance of up-to-date results of MQP research, along with discussion of its implications and possible applications.

Book Proceedings of the International Conference on Macroscopic Quantum Coherence

Download or read book Proceedings of the International Conference on Macroscopic Quantum Coherence written by E. Sassaroli and published by World Scientific Publishing Company Incorporated. This book was released on 1998 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the end of the nineteenth century neared, it was clear to many in the physics community that if only Newton's equations plus Maxwell's equations could be solved adequately, there would really be nothing very new in physics on a fundamental level. Then carne relativity and quantum mechanics. As we now approach the end of the twentieth century, it is clear to many in the physics community that if one could adequately solve somebody's gauge field theory (or somebody else's string model), then nothing fundamentally new would ever again enter into physics. To others in the physics community, it is somewhat doubtful that our present physical understanding of the world, especially of quantum mechanics, has reached such a pinnacle. This conference was organized to discuss the present state of affairs in our knowledge, both experimental and theoretical, of the basic tenets of quantum mechanics. Many fields of physics in which quantum mechanics plays a central role were included: (i) atomic and molecular beams; (ii) photon beams; (iii) atomic interference in atom-surface physics and atom wire physics; (iv) Bose-condensed systems; (v) quantum "1/f" noise; (vi) quantum electrodynamics effects in water, colloidal systems and biological systems; (vii) quantum interference in neutrino physics; (viii) periodic-in-time driven quantum systems; (ix) superconducting quantum circuits; and (x) quantum computer circuit elements. The large variety of different topics, all of current importance, allowed for various viewpoints that axe usually not present when conferences devoted to narrower topics are held. The cross-fertilization of ideas was greatly appreciated by the participants, and will be of equalinterest to the reader of the proceedings.

Book Open Questions in Quantum Physics

Download or read book Open Questions in Quantum Physics written by G. Tarozzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to its extraordinary predictive power and the great generality of its mathematical structure, quantum theory is able, at least in principle, to describe all the microscopic and macroscopic properties of the physical world, from the subatomic to the cosmological level. Nevertheless, ever since the Copen hagen and Gottingen schools in 1927 gave it the definitive formu lation, now commonly known as the orthodox interpretation, the theory has suffered from very serious logical and epistemologi cal problems. These shortcomings were immediately pointed out by some of the principal founders themselves of quantum theory, to wit, Planck, Einstein, Ehrenfest, Schrodinger, and de Broglie, and by the philosopher Karl Popper, who assumed a position of radical criticism with regard to the standard formulation of the theory. The aim of the participants in the workshop on Open Questions in Quantum Physics, which was held in Bari (Italy), in the Department of Physics of the University, during May 1983 and whose Proceedings are collected in the present volume, accord ingly was to discuss the formal, the physical and the epistemo logical difficulties of quantum theory in the light of recent crucial developments and to propose some possible resolutions of three basic conceptual dilemmas, which are posed respectively ~: (a) the physical developments of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen argument and Bell's theorem, i. e.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a five-day NATO Advanced Research Workshop "On Three Levels, the mathematical physics of micro-, meso-, and macro phenomena," conducted from July 19 to 23 in Leuven, Belgium. The main purpose of the workshop was to bring together and to confront where relevant, classical and quantum approaches in the rigorous study of the relation between the various levels of physical description. The reader will find here discussions on a variety of topics involving a broad range of scales. For the micro-level, contributions are presented on models of reaction-diffusion pro cesses, quantum groups and quantum spin systems. The reports on quantum disorder, the quantum Hall effect, semi-classical approaches of wave mechanics and the random Schrodinger equation can be situated on the meso-level. Discussions on macroscopic quantum effects and large scale fluctuations are dealing with the macroscopic level of description. These three levels are however not independent and emphasis is put on relating these scales of description. This is especially the case for the contributions on kinetic and hydrodynamicallimits, the discussions on large deviations and the strong and weak coupling limits. The advisory board was composed of J.L. Lebowitz, J.T. Lewis and E.H. Lieb. The organizing committee was formed by Ph.A. Martin, G.L. Sewell, E.R. Speer and A.

Book Quantum like Models and Coherent Effects

This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the use of the quantum-like description that has been successful in describing numerous physical scenarios in many branches of physics, including the dynamics of charged particle beams in accelerators and the propagation of electromagnetic wave energy in nonlinear media such as plasmas and optical fibres. The quantum-like approach seems, therefore, to form a common basis for understanding the observations in many diverse field of science.

Book Proceedings of the Conference in Honour of Murray Gell Mann s 80th Birthday

Download or read book Proceedings of the Conference in Honour of Murray Gell Mann s 80th Birthday written by Harald Fritzsch and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference on Quantum Mechanics, Elementary Particles, Quantum Cosmology and Complexity was held in honour of Professor Murray Gell-Mann's 80th birthday in Singapore on 24?26 February 2010. The conference paid tribute to Professor Gell-Mann's great achievements in the elementary particle physics. This notable birthday volume contains the presentations made at the conference by many eminent scientists, including Nobel laureates C N Yang, G 't Hooft and K Wilson. Other invited speakers include G Zweig, N Samios, M Karliner, G Karl, M Shifman, J Ellis, S Adler and A Zichichi. About Murray Gell-Mann Murray Gell-Mann, born September 15, 1929, won the 1969 Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. His contributions span the entire history of particle physics, from the early days of the particle zoo to the modern day QCD. Along the way, even as he proposed new quantum numbers to bring order into the zoo, he had fun in naming them. And thus was born Strangeness, Flavor, Hadrons, Baryons, Leptons, the Eightfold Way, Color, Quarks, Gluons and, with Harald Fritzsch, the standard field theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). He also proposed with Richard Feynman the V-A theory of beta decay. Gell-Mann discovered the Current Algebra, proposed (with Levy) the sigma model of pions and the see-saw mechanism for the neutrino masses.

Book Waves and Particles in Light and Matter

Download or read book Waves and Particles in Light and Matter written by Augusto Garuccio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From September 24 through 30, 1992 the Workshop on "Waves and Parti cles in Light and Matter" was held in the Italian city of Trani in celebration of the centenary of Louis de Broglie's birth. As is well known, the relationship between quantum theory and ob jective reality was one of the main threads running through the researches of this French physicist. It was therefore in a fitting tribute to him on his 90th birthday that ten years ago an international conference on the same subject was convened in Perugia. On that occasion, physicists from all over the world interested in the problematics of wave-particle duality engaged in thoughtful debates (the proceedings of which were subsequently published) on recent theoretical and experimental developments in our understanding of the foundations of quantum mechanics. This time around, about 120 scientists, coming from 5 continents, in the warm and pleasant atmosphere of Trani's Colonna Conference Center focussed their discussions on recent results concerned with the EPR para dox, matter-interferometry, reality of de Broglie's waves, photon detection, macroscopic quantum coherence, alternative theories to usual quantum mechanics, special relativity, state reduction, and other related topics. The workshop was organized in plenary sessions, round tables, and poster sessions, and the present volume collects most-but not all-of the presented papers. A number of acknowledgements are due. We thank, first of all, the contributors, without whose constant dedication this volume could not have been published.

Book Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization QTM 94

Download or read book Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization QTM 94 written by Leon Gunther and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first NATO Advanced Workshop on Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization (QTM) was organized and co-directed by Bernard Barbara, Leon Gunther, Nicolas Garcia, and Anthony Leggett and was held from June, 27 through July 1, 1994 in Grenoble and Chichilianne, France. These Proceedings include twenty-nine articles that represent the contributions of the participants in the Workshop. Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization is not only interesting for purely academic reasons. It was pointed out in the review article by L. Gunther in the December, 1990 issue of Physics World, that QTM may be destined to play a significant role within the next two decades in limiting the density of information storage in magnetic systems. Recent advances have indicated that this limitation may well be reached even earlier than first predicted. Furthermore, the number of people who have entered the field of study of QTM during these past few years has increased many fi)ld. The time was therefore opportune to hold a Workshop to bring together for the first time the leading researchers of QTM, both theoretical and experimental, so as to discuss the current status of the field. The most controversial issue at the time of the Workshop was how to establish r.eliable criteria for determining whether experimental results do indeed reveal manifestations of QTM. We believe that much progress was made at the Workshop on this issue.
