Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniting thirty years of authoritative scholarship by a master of textual detail, Machiavelli's Virtue is a comprehensive statement on the founder of modern politics. Harvey Mansfield reveals the role of sects in Machiavelli's politics, his advice on how to rule indirectly, and the ultimately partisan character of his project, and shows him to be the founder of such modern and diverse institutions as the impersonal state and the energetic executive. Accessible and elegant, this groundbreaking interpretation explains the puzzles and reveals the ambition of Machiavelli's thought. "The book brings together essays that have mapped [Mansfield's] paths of reflection over the past thirty years. . . . The ground, one would think, is ancient and familiar, but Mansfield manages to draw out some understandings, or recognitions, jarringly new."—Hadley Arkes, New Criterion "Mansfield's book more than rewards the close reading it demands."—Colin Walters, Washington Times "[A] masterly new book on the Renaissance courtier, statesman and political philosopher. . . . Mansfield seeks to rescue Machiavelli from liberalism's anodyne rehabilitation."—Roger Kimball, The Wall Street Journal

Book Introducing Machiavelli

Download or read book Introducing Machiavelli written by Patrick Curry and published by Icon Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated guide to the crucial Italian philosopher and author of The Prince. 'Machiavellian' is a popular byword for treachery and opportunism. Machiavelli's classic book on statecraft, The Prince, published over 400 years ago, remains controversial to this day because of its electrifying frankness as a practical guide to power. Is it a how-to manual for dictators, a cynical philosophy of 'the end justifies the means', or a more complex and subtle analysis of successful government? Machiavelli was a loyal servant of the Florentine republic. His opposition to Medici despotism led him to torture on the rack and exile, and yet he chose as his model for the Prince the most notorious tyrant, Cesare Borgia. Introducing Machiavelli traces the colourful life of this paradoxical realist whose clear-sighted patriotism made him the first truly modern political scientist. Machiavelli is seen as central to the postmodern debate on Civil Society. This book brings the creative turbulence of Renaissance Italy to life, and presents a compelling portrait of a key figure of European political history.

Book Machiavelli The Prince

Download or read book Machiavelli The Prince written by Niccolò Machiavelli and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "Machiavelli: The Prince" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The Prince is a political treatise by the Florentine philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli, written c. 1513. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Machiavelli dedicated The Prince to the ruling Medici of the time, leading some today to still speculate whether the book was a satire. Niccolò Machiavelli asserted that The Prince (president, dictator, prime minister, etc.) does not have to be concerned with ethics, as long as their motivation is to protect the state. It is this questionable belief that in many ways had lead to the modern world as we know it. His assertion was that the head of state must protect the state no matter the cost and no matter what rules he or she breaks in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook presents 2 Political Masterpieces by Niccolò Machiavelli: The Prince & The Art of War. The Prince: Il Principe (The Prince) is a political treatise by the Florentine philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli, written c. 1513, published posthumously 1532. The Art of War: written between 1519 and 1520 and published in 1521. It was the only historical or political work printed during Machiavelli's lifetime. Voltaire said, "Machiavelli taught Europe the art of war; it had long been practiced, without being known." Machiavelli considered The Art of War his greatest achievement. This book teaches how to recruit, train, motivate, and discipline an army, shows the difference between strategy and tactics. Machiavelli does a masterful job of breaking down and analyzing historic battles.

Book Niccolo Di Bernardo Dei Machiavelli

Download or read book Niccolo Di Bernardo Dei Machiavelli written by Niccolò Machiavelli and published by . This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527), an Italian political philosopher, is remarkable for his self-contradictions. In his writings he appears sometimes as a cynical pragmatist, sometimes - as an ardent Republican. Perception of Machiavelli is also quite contradictory - sometimes entirely derogatory and scornful, sometimes - admiring and appreciative. Who was he, this peer of Leonardo da Vinci? A smart and cruel manipulator or a passionate libertarian? And if both are true, does not it shed a strange light on the heritage of High Renaissance? Our readers can now judge Machiavelli on the basis of his work.

Book Machiavelli s New Modes and Orders

Download or read book Machiavelli s New Modes and Orders written by Harvey Claflin Mansfield and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the only full-length interpretive study of Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy, Harvey C. Mansfield provides a chapter-by-chapter commentary of this controversial and ambiguous work. Mansfield argues that Machiavelli's new modes and orders were intended to undermine the classical and Christian foundations of political philosophy and establish a new foundation not only for modern political philosophy, but for modern politics as well. This penetrating study, wrought by one of Machiavelli's foremost interpreters, uncovers the hidden intricacies of the Discourses. It will inform and challenge its readers at every step.

Book Althusser and Contingency

Download or read book Althusser and Contingency written by Stefano Pippa and published by Mimesis. This book was released on 2019-06-13T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of contingency plays a central role in Althusser’s attempt to recast Marxist philosophy and to free the Marxist conception of history from notions such as teleology, necessity and origin. Drawing on a wealth of published and unpublished material, Stefano Pippa discusses how Althusser’s unfaltering commitment to contingency should encourage us to revisit our understanding of his conceptions of structural change, ideology, politics and materialism. As grounded on contingency, Althusser’s so-called ‘Structural Marxism’ originates in fact a ‘logic of interruption’ and a notion of structurally under-determined becoming; just like his theory of ideology is radically reinterpreted on the basis of his notion of ‘overinterpellation’. Though constant, Althusser’s relationship with contingency has not been monolithic throughout his career. As observed by Pippa, it is possible to distinguish a ‘political’ and a ‘philosophical’ moment in Althusser’s late materialism of contingency. Perhaps, as this volume suggests, the problematic coexistence of these two aspects might account for the unstable character of Althusser’s late philosophical project.
