Book Gods Of The Egyptians 2 Vols

Download or read book Gods Of The Egyptians 2 Vols written by E. A. Wallis Budge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2005. By far the most thorough, most useful coverage of the gods of Ancient Egypt is this book by Dr. Budge of the British Museum, one of the foremost Egyptologists of the century. In it is presented practically everything known about the high gods, the local gods, demigods, demons, and mythological figures of Khem. This title is the second volume of a two-part series, which covers research and information on Egyptian mythology and culture. It provides full information on the origins of the ancient religion; its peculiarly Egyptian aspects; evolution of cults, rites, and gods; the priesthoods; the heretical aberration of Ikhnaten and the Aten cult; the cult of Osiris; the Book of the Dead and its rites; the sacred animals and birds; heaven and hell, and much other secret wisdom that has been discovered hidden in mummy cases or written on tomb walls. Richly illustrated, with many reproductions of tomb and mummy-case paintings, with many full texts are presented, with both hieroglyphs and translation. Dr. Budge's book is a standard work in the history of religion. It is also a most useful background book for anyone seriously interested in the life and thought of Ancient Egypt, an explicator of many of the obscurer passages in the Book of Dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The titulary of the ancient Egyptian king was one of the symbols of authority he assumed at his coronation. At first consisting only of the Horus name, the titulary grew to include other phrases chosen to represent the king’s special relationship with the divine world. By the Middle Kingdom (late twenty-first century B.C.E.), the full fivefold titulary was clearly established, and kings henceforth used all five names regularly. This volume includes all rulers’ names from the so-called Dynasty 0 (ca. 3200 B.C.E.) to the last Ptolemaic ruler in the late first century B.C.E., offered in transliteration and English translation with an introduction and notes.

Book Staging Black Queer South Africa

Download or read book Staging Black Queer South Africa written by S’fundo W. Sosibo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Themes of identity, tradition, and belonging blend together in this collection of five plays celebrating South Africa's vibrancy and diversity. Delving into African mythology to uncover a rich tapestry of history, spirit, and ancestry, Staging Black, Queer South Africa: Plays for the Gods! offers profound insights into the contemporary Black queer experience, shedding light on the complex interplay between identity and tradition in modern South Africa. Drawing on long-held parables, such as Camus' Absurd Hero, this collection bridges the gap between Ritual Theatre and Theatre of the Absurd to fully evoke the paradox of being Black and queer in South Africa, with the collection coining the 'Absurd Ritual' genre. Touching on ideas of Ubungoma, IsiZulu Shamanism, and the legacy of queer individuals in African communities, the plays challenge long-held assumptions on whether queerness 'belongs' in traditional beliefs. Along with a contextualizing introduction by Dr. Princess Sibanda, University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, and a personal preface by the playwright, Staging Black, Queer South Africa is a refreshing and often shocking look at the intersection of Blackness, queerness, and spirituality, and how this intersection is far from being a paradox.

Book The Egyptian Book of the Dead

Download or read book The Egyptian Book of the Dead written by E. A. Wallis Budge and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of the Dead: The Papyrus of Ani is the Book of the Dead for Ani, the scribe from Thebes, and is "the largest, the most perfect, the best preserved, and the best illuminated of all the papyri," according to editor and translator E.A. Wallis Budge. "Books of the Dead" were ancient Egyptian funeral texts, employed from around 1550 B.C. to 50 B.C., intended to help the dead pass through the underworld into the afterlife with magic spells and inscriptions which were written on papyrus scrolls and placed in the coffin. The Papyrus of Ani is a key scroll in understanding Egyptian Books of the Dead, and this text is ideal for those interested in the early discovery and translation of Egyptian hieroglyphics. This is the original 1895 edition and includes the full version of The Papyrus of Ani. SIR ERNEST ALFRED THOMPSON WALLIS BUDGE (1857-1934) was born in Bodmin, Cornwall in the UK and discovered an interest in languages at a very early age. Budge spent all his free time learning and discovering Semitic languages, including Assyrian, Syriac, and Hebrew. Eventually, through a close contact, he was able to acquire a job working with Egyptian and Iraqi artifacts at the British Museum. Budge excavated and deciphered numerous cuneiform and hieroglyphic documents, contributing vastly to the museum's collection. Eventually, he became the Keeper of his department, specializing in Egyptology. Budge wrote many books during his lifetime, most specializing in Egyptian life, religion, and language.

Book The Signs and Symbols of Primordial Man

Download or read book The Signs and Symbols of Primordial Man written by Albert Churchward and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1913 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Churchward's famous study of Ancient Egyptian myths and symbology reveals how their mythological culture evolved over thousands of years, influencing other civilizations. The author was among the first Western scholars to investigate the connection between the religious symbols, deities and traditions of Egypt, and those which emerged in later societies. By studying the hieroglyphic texts preserved in the monuments and papyrus of the Egyptian society, Churchward uncovered the origins of legendary stories, the roles of Gods like Horus and Ptah, and the emergence of important symbols such as the triangle, cross and swastika. The religious and cultural influence of this ancient society, whose dynasties stretched across millennia, is revealed to be of staggering magnitude. This book pieces together the connections between Egyptian lore and that of the Hebrews, the Freemasons, the Mayans and various tribal societies. The depth of Churchward's enquiry is enormous; hundreds of drawings, symbols, and photographs accompany the narrative, that the reader may discover the myriad connections and wide-ranging influence of the Egyptians from antiquity onward. Frequent quotations and cites of accomplished workers in the field of Egyptology, such as Dr. Wallis Budge and Gerald Massey, further support the points established.
