Book The Development of Latin Clause Structure

Download or read book The Development of Latin Clause Structure written by Lieven Danckaert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Latin word order, and in particular the relative ordering of i) lexical verbs and direct objects (OV vs VO) and ii) auxiliaries and non-finite verbs (VAux vs AuxV). In Latin these elements can freely be ordered with respect to each other, whereas the present-day Romance languages only allow for the head-initial orders VO and AuxV. Lieven Danckaert offers a detailed, corpus-based description of these two word order alternations, focusing on their diachronic development in the period from c. 200 BC until 600 AD. The corpus data reveal that some received wisdom needs to be reconsidered: there is in fact no evidence for any major increase in productivity of the order VO during the eight centuries under investigation, and the order AuxV only becomes more frequent in clauses with a modal verb and an infinitive, not in clauses with a BE-auxiliary and a past participle. The book also explores a more fundamental question about Latin syntax, namely whether or not the language is configurational, in the sense that a phrase structure grammar (with 'higher-order constituents' such as verb phrases) is needed to describe and analyse Latin word order patterns. Four pieces of evidence are presented that suggest that Latin is indeed a fully configurational language, despite its high degree of word order flexibility. Specifically, it is shown that there is ample evidence for the existence of a verb phrase constituent. The book thus contributes to the ongoing debate regarding the status of configurationality as a language universal.

Book Cicero s de Provinciis Consularibus Oratio

Download or read book Cicero s de Provinciis Consularibus Oratio written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no other single Roman speech exemplifies the connection between oratory, politics and imperialism better than Cicero's De Provinciis Consularibus, pronounced to the senate in 56 BC. Cicero puts his talents at the service of the powerful "triumviri" (Caesar, Crassus and Pompey), whose aims he advances by appealing to the senators' imperialistic and chauvinistic ideology. This oration, then, yields precious insights into several areas of late republican life: international relations between Rome and the provinces (Gaul, Macedonia and Judaea); the senators' view on governors, publicani (tax-farmers) and foreigners; the dirty mechanics of high politics in the 50s, driven by lust for domination and money; and Cicero's own role in that political choreography. This speech also exemplifies the exceptional range of Cicero's oratory: the invective against Piso and Gabinius calls for biting irony, the praise of Caesar displays high rhetoric, the rejection of other senators' recommendations is a tour de force of logical and sophisticated argument, and Cicero's justification for his own conduct is embedded in the self-fashioning narrative which is typical of his post reditum speeches. This new commentary includes an updated introduction, which provides the readers with a historical, rhetorical and stylistic background to appreciate the complexities of Cicero's oration, as well as indexes and maps.

Book Ancestor Masks and Aristocratic Power in Roman Culture

Download or read book Ancestor Masks and Aristocratic Power in Roman Culture written by Harriet I. Flower and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first comprehensive study of Roman ancestor masks in English, Harriet Flower explains the reasons behind the use of wax masks in the commemoration of politically prominent family members by the elite society of Rome. Flower traces the functional evolution of ancestor masks, from theirfirst attested appearance in the third century BC to their last mention in the sixth century AD, through the examination of literary sources in both prose and verse, legal texts, epigraphy, archaeology, numismatics, and art. It is by putting these masks, which were worn by actors at the funerals ofthe deceased, into their legal, social, and political context that Flower is able to elucidate their central position in the media of the time and their special meaning as symbols of power and prestige.

Book Republican Legal Theory

Book excerpt: Republican legal theory developed out of the jurisprudential and constitutional legacy of the Roman res publica as interpreted over two millennia in Europe and North America. In this book - the most comprehensive study of republican legal ideas to date - Professor Sellers traces the development of republican legal theory. Explaining the importance of popular sovereignty, the rule of law, the separation of powers and other essential republican legal characteristics, he argues that these republican institutions have introduced a new era of justice into politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen contributions to the multilingual volume together chart Cicero's presence in the cultural history of Basel - from the city's foundation to the heyday of humanist print culture, to the cultural politics of the modern day. Written by scholars working from different academic traditions and organised in four sections, they trace a broad range of engagements with Cicero in Basel across time, thus offering the rudiments of a localised form of reception history: "Ciceronian Foundations" focuses on Cicero's role in the city's (and her university's) foundation myths; "Editions and Commentaries" centres on the Ciceronian editions and commentaries in the heyday of humanist printing culture; "Discussions and Engagements" situates his reception in the intellectual currents that define humanist Basel - from stylistic and literary debates to the controversies of the theologians; lastly, "Scholarship and Education" explores the entanglements of academic and civic life that come to define Cicero's place in Basel from the 17th century. For all their diversity, the contributions are united in their aim to contribute both to the study of Ciceronian reception and to the cultural history and development of Basel in its European context.
