Trois exemples de grille d'observation partagée, co-construites avec les acteurs de terrain, dans le secteur de l'enfance handicapée, de l'insertion sociale et de la santé mentale, viennent notamment illustrer cette démarche d'observation. Enfin, ce livre propose une lecture critique de la nouvelle classification internationale du handicap (CIF) et ses applications possibles dans les différents travaux d'évaluation. Les auteurs ont en particulier construit, à partir de la CIF, une échelle globale d'évaluation de l'autonomie (EGEA), pouvant constituer une base commune d'évaluation des besoins et être complétée par des modules adaptés aux spécificités de chaque population.

This book is the first extensive, comparative and interdisciplinary study on the subject. The recent evolution of these alternative techniques is considered from the perspective of their integration into Western medical systems. The first part of the research is an overview of the current position of alternative medicines in some Western countries. Sociological elements as well as various research and educational issues are presented. The study then focuses on the licensing to practise alternative medicine and the coverage of alternative medicines. The second part of the study analyses and compares the most important regulatory mechanisms. Proposals are also made for the regulation of alternative medicines. The last chapter deals with the concept of an integrated system of medicine. The main components of the system are presented and compared to current trends and a theoretical model. Moreover, the book addresses the questions: What is an integrated system of medicine? Are we moving towards such a system? If so, what are the reasons and is such a shift reasonable and feasible?

Book excerpt: This paper provides a theoretical framework to understand the way in which exchange controls modify the behavior of the different agents in the economy, leading to the creation of a parallel market economy. It gives the necessary theoretical elements to analyze this parallel market economy and provides a simple methodology to obtain relevant quantitative information about it. Finally, the paper elaborates on some of the policy implications of the existence of a parallel market economy. The model developed shows that the parallel market activities can be explained through the optimizing behavior of exporters and importers, which determines the amount of import and export smuggling, the level of the rent-seeking activity, and the black market exchange rate that is consistent with an equilibrium position where no one has any more incentives to move from their attained position. A method to detect the presence, and assess the magnitude of the parallel market economy, as well as to explain its behavior quantitatively, is then developed and applied to the case of Ghana.
