This book examines three expeditions by the Spanish to the borders of Charcas, a district that covers present-day Bolivia and the northwest of Argentina, in the second half of the sixteenth century, using an approach that has not been attempted until now. Scholarship on these events has framed them as part of a gradual top-down process of centralisation driven by the Crown to extend its power and build a colonial ‘state’ in the Americas. This book challenges that view, approaching the expeditions through an analysis of the political culture that underpinned them. It explores the events within the process of installation and consolidation of royal jurisdiction, understood here as the authority to establish law and deliver justice, in a remote area. This was a process achieved through coercion and violence, as well as negotiation and consensus, that involved both the Spanish and indigenous peoples, and that frequently created overlapping jurisdictions, via downscaling of politics and dispersal of power. Jurisdictional politics were decided and settled in battlefields and courts and involved the theatricalization of power, to make a distant monarch present, which, paradoxically, made such absence the more evident. This paper analyzes the extent to which workers in Bolivia face barriers to entry in the formal and informal sectors of the urban labor market. These barriers are most prevalent in the formal sector because of regulation. The higher wages found in the that sector are often regarded as evidence of labor market segmentation. However, wage differences between sectors may also result from compensating wage differentials, which follow from non-monetary returns to the job such as health insurance, utility associated with the workplace, and job security. The author proposes a model that allows testing for labor market segmentation between the two sectors on the basis of cross- sectional data. The methodology incorporates data on ways in which individuals search for new jobs and information about discouraged workers who have stopped searching for jobs. The proposed model accounts for all of the specific features of urban labor markets in developing countries, in particular the existence of a competitive informal sector.

This significant legislative output, however, does not take place in a vacuum. Rules of private international law have been earlier (and still are) adopted at national, international and even European level in scattered regulations and directives. The recent plethora of private international law rules gives rise to issues of delineation and calls for some sort of ordering as gaps, overlaps and contradictions become flagrant. At the same time, the resulting interactions can offer new insight, ideas and even opportunities at a more theoretical level. This book gathers a collection of essays resulting out of a series of international seminars held in Lyon, Barcelona and Louvain-la-Neuve. During those seminars, young researchers selected in an open call for papers had the opportunity to discuss their views among themselves as well as with various specialists of the field, such as more senior academics, EU civil servants, national experts and representatives of other international organisations. The book offers the fresh views of those who will in the future shape the dialectic between the various sources of private international law and attempts to launch a discussion on the “living together” of legal sources. Two ranges of topics are addressed in the book: - firstly, the relationship between EU private international law and national law (substantial and procedural) and/or international law (international instruments of private international law or of uniform substantive law); and - secondly, the relationship between EU private international law and other aspects of EU law (internal market rules of primary law, harmonisation through secondary law and other pieces of legislation enacted in the realm of the area of freedom, security and justice).

Book excerpt: This book analyzes the experiences of women living and working across the busiest and most transited frontier in South America, the Paraná Tri-Border Area (TBA), between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. From a feminist approach, it shows how, in these territories, the gender violence is intensified, configuring an expression of ultra-intensity patriarchy. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted for two years along with Paraguayan women living and working between Ciudad del Este (Paraguay), and Foz de Iguazú (Brazil), the authors analyze, on the one hand, the intricate connection between gender violence and ethnicity on these borders; and, on the other hand, the persistence of a female care that appears to offer a fundamental tool of resistance, of vital female drive. The work is divided into three parts. The first is intended to read like a trip to this complex and fascinating corner of South America through a visual and ethnohistoric journey of the region, as well as a theoretical debate that defines gender violence and its particular condensation on border territories. The second part explores the women’s stories in-depth and follow the narrative thread of their biographies, rebuilding their experiences from their families of origin to their productive insertion on the TBA. Finally, the third part takes an in-depth look at the complex links between the social reproduction obligations that fall on women, and the gender violence on the TBA, stressing how they develop strategies to change their life conditions by establishing transborder circuits of care. Ultra-Intensity Patriarchy: Care and Gender Violence on the Paraná Tri-Border Area will be a valuable tool for researchers from different disciplines, such as anthropology, sociology, population studies and gender studies, interested in the growing field of studies of feminism, borders, and migration from an intersectional perspective.
