Weil, whose original axiomatization was soon followed by those of Bourbaki and Tukey; in this book use is made chiefly of Tukey's system, based on uniform coverings. The organization of the book as a whole depends on the Eilenberg-MacLane notions of category, functor and naturality, in the spirit of Klein's Erlanger Program but with greater reach. The preface gives a concise history of the subject since 1936 and a foreword outlines the category theory of Eilenberg and MacLane. The chapters cover fundamental concepts and constructions; function spaces; mappings into polyhedra; dimension (1) and (2); compactifications and locally fine spaces. Most of the chapters are followed by exercises, occasional unsolved problems, and a major unsolved problem; the famous outstanding problem of characterizing the Euclidean plane is discussed in an appendix. There is a good index and a copious bibliography intended not to itemize sources but to guide further reading.

This book was written to be a readable introduction to algebraic topology with rather broad coverage of the subject. The viewpoint is quite classical in spirit, and stays well within the confines of pure algebraic topology. Topology developed as a field of study out of geometry and set theory, through analysis of concepts such as space, dimension, and transformation. Such ideas go back to Gottfried Leibniz, who in the 17th century envisioned the geometria situs and analysis situs. Leonhard Euler's Seven Bridges of Koenigsberg Problem and Polyhedron Formula are arguably the field's first theorems. The term topology was introduced by Johann Benedict Listing in the 19th century, although it was not until the first decades of the 20th century that the idea of a topological space was developed. By the middle of the 20th century, topology had become a major branch of mathematics. The motivating insight behind topology is that some geometric problems depend not on the exact shape of the objects involved, but rather on the way they are put together. For example, the square and the circle have many properties in common: they are both one dimensional objects (from a topological point of view) and both separate the plane into two parts, the part inside and the part outside.

The construction of extensions of various sorts - compactifications, realcompactifications, H-elosed extension- has long been a major area of study in general topology. A ubiquitous method of constructing an extension of a space is to let the "new points" of the extension be ultrafilters on certain lattices associated with the space. Examples of such lattices are the lattice of open sets, the lattice of zero-sets, and the lattice of elopen sets. A less well-known construction in general topology is the "absolute" of a space. Associated with each Hausdorff space X is an extremally disconnected zero-dimensional Hausdorff space EX, called the Iliama absolute of X, and a perfect, irreducible, a-continuous surjection from EX onto X. A detailed discussion of the importance of the absolute in the study of topology and its applications appears at the beginning of Chapter 6. What concerns us here is that in most constructions of the absolute, the points of EX are certain ultrafilters on lattices associated with X. Thus extensions and absolutes, although very different, are constructed using similar tools.

Specifically, one knows that the set C(X) of all real- or com plex-valued continuous functions on a completely regular space X forms a locally convex topological algebra, a fortiori a topological vector space, in the compact-open topology. Chapters VIII and X include this material, which, to the regret of many interested readers has not previously been available in book form (a recent publication (Weir [\06]) does, however, contain some material of our Chapter X).
