Download or read book English MPs written by Michael W. McCahill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was the role of elected legislators? Was it to represent the opinions of constituents or to vote according to their informed opinions reflecting the needs of the kingdom? Most authorities have accepted Edmund Burke's depiction of 18th-century MPs, insisting it was their right to form their opinions without reference to the instructions of constituents. This study provides answers to these important questions and, in doing so, reveals that Burke's vision does not represent how the House of Commons functioned during the last two decades of the 18th century. Rather than focusing on specific issues or demographic groups, English MPs brings to the fore the legislative activity of a broad segment of late 18th-century English MPs. This book shows they were diligent legislators who attended to the needs of constituents, in the process developing strong connections with them. It demonstrates that these connections did not rest on shared beliefs in reformist ideologies except in, and around, the metropolis. Instead, they grew out of the members' timely and effective tending, session after session, to the host of measures brought forward by constituents and neighbours. McCahill explores, in fascinating detail, the consequences of this bond. In this book, McCahill draws from an impressive array of primary sources and secondary literature to combine a structural analysis with broad surveys and detailed case-studies. The result is an illuminating and a comprehensive account of the House of Commons between 1760 and 1790.

Book MPs in Dublin

Download or read book MPs in Dublin written by E. M. Johnston-Liik and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Parliament met for the first time on June 18, 1264 at Castledermott and for the last time in the Parliament House, Dublin, on August 2, 1800. It had lasted for over 500 years, and from 1707 it was the only parliament in the British Empire with the medieval structure of King (represented by the Lord Lieutenant), Lords and Commons. Like the English/British parliament it only met regularly from the end of the 17th century. In 1692 Ireland had a minimal infrastructure; by 1800 it had become recognisable as the country in whose history and culture there is a continuing and irresistible tide of interest worldwide. Since its publication, "History of the Irish Parliament "has acquired an already legendary status. This companion volume looks at Irish society and the personal concerns which influenced the MPs. This volume will form a valuable reference work in addition and complementary to the "History of the Irish Parliament." The six-volume "History of the Irish Parliament 1692-1800" was published in 2002. The online resource is available at www.historyoftheirishparliament.com.

Book The MPS Language Workbench

Download or read book The MPS Language Workbench written by Fabien Campagne and published by Fabien Campagne. This book was released on with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MPS Language Workbench, Volume II (first edition). The second volume of the series explains how to customize the JetBrains Meta-Programming System (MPS) platform to better integrate it with the needs of your languages. Volume II continues where Volume I ended and discusses more advanced features of the MPS platform. This book includes a detailed example to illustrate the design and implementation of a custom web aspect. This detailed example illustrates how the advanced features of the MPS platform make it possible to design languages suitable to generate complete applications. The Meta-Programming System (MPS) is a new kind of tool called a Language Workbench that makes it easier and more fun to write programs. With traditional programming, it is common to choose one programming language to solve a problem and being limited by this choice. When working with MPS you can use and combine different languages to solve a problem. You can also create simple languages (e.g., Domain Specific Languages) or extend existing ones when the languages available do not exactly meet the evolving needs of the problem at hand. The languages that you create with MPS will integrate nicely with languages developed by others. MPS is open-source and can be obtained from http://jetbrains.com/mps (or http://github.com/JetBrains/MPS/).

Book Parliamentary Committees in the Policy Process

Download or read book Parliamentary Committees in the Policy Process written by Sven T. Siefken and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the often shadowy, but essential role of committees, which exist in modern parliaments around the globe, and it questions the conventional notion that the ‘real’ work of parliament happens in committees. Renowned country specialists take a close look at what goes on in committees and how it matters for policy making. While committees are seen as the central place where policy is made, they often hold their sessions closed to the public and calls for transparency are growing. To understand this "black box" it is necessary to look within but also beyond the walls of the committee rooms and parliament buildings. Bringing together formal and informal aspects, rules and practices shows that committees are not a paradise of policy making. They have great relevance nonetheless: as crystallization points in the policy networks, as drivers for division of labor and for socialization and the integration of MPs. The new insights presented in this book will be of interest to scholars, students and professionals in parliamentary affairs, legislative studies, government, and comparative politics. They are also relevant for political analysts, journalists, and policymakers.
