Book excerpt: This work examines a test case for the relationship between the polis and the Hellenistic empire focusing specifically on the interaction between Antiochos III and the cities of Western Asia Minor (226-188 BC). Such a study is possible thanks to a rich epigraphical documentation which has been reproduced extensively and translated in an appendix to this book. Dr Ma approaches this material from a variety of angles: narrative history, structural analyses of imperial power, and analyses of the functions played by language and stereotype in the interaction between rulers and ruled. The result is to further a nuanced appreciation of the relation between the Hellenistic king and the Hellenistic polis by drawing attention to the power of the Hellenistic empires, to the capacity of political language to modify power relations, and to the efforts of the Hellenistic polis to preserve its sense of identity and civic pride, if not its political independence.

Book excerpt: The Greek grammarian Epaphroditus, trained in Alexandria and prominent as a teacher in Rome of the Neronian-Flavian era, continued the tradition of Hellenistic scholarship in his study of Homer, the Hesiodic Shield of Herakles, and the Aitia of Kallimachos as well as in his treatise on etymology and in the compilation of a glossary of unfamiliar words. Numerous fragments from these works have been preserved in the Ethnika of the sixth-century grammarian Stephanos of Byzantium, the scholia on Homer and other authors, and, notably, in Byzantine etymological lexica, not all of which are fully accessible in print. The present edition presents a critical text of the fragments within the broader context in which they have been transmitted. Each text is supplied with a critical apparatus and a list of the more important parallels. To make the edition more easily accessible to non-specialists an English translation has been given not only of the fragments but also of longer texts quoted in the notes, features which should be of use to specialists as well. After each fragment a short commentary summarizes the results. An extensive introduction presents the life, works, and scholarship of Epaphroditus and explains the reasons for the classification of the fragments. A concordance to the edition of Lünzner (1866), a full bibliography, and indices facilitate the use of the work. The aim of the edition has not only been to set the grammarian in his rightful place in the history of scholarship but to encourage further work in this neglected field by demonstrating its intrinsic interest and by explaining methods and technical terms which are often taken for granted in specialist works. Book excerpt: In his utopian novel Hiera Anagraphe (Sacred History) Euhemerus of Messene (ca. 300 B.C.) describes his travel to the island Panchaia in the Indian Ocean where he discovered an inscribed stele in the temple of Zeus Triphylius. It turned out that the Olympian gods (Uranos, Kronos, Zeus) were deified kings. The travels of Zeus allowed to describe peoples and places all over the world. Winiarczyk investigates the sources of the theological views of Euhemerus. He proves that Euhemerus’ religious views were rooted in old Greek tradition (the worship of heroes, gods as founders of their own cult, tombs of gods, euergetism, rationalistic interpretation of myths, the explanations of the origin of religion by the sophists, the ruler cult). The description of the Panchaian society is intended to suggest an archaic and closed culture, in which the stele recording res gestae of the deified kings might have been preserved. The translation of Ennius’ Euhemerus sive Sacra historia (ca. 200 - ca. 194) is a free prose rendering, which Lactantius knew only indirectly. The book is concluded by a short history of Euhemerism in the pagan, Christian and Jewish literature.
