Book Political Economy in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Political Economy in the Twentieth Century written by Maxine Berg and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1990 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of previously unpublished essays discusses the work of a select number of major intellectuals of the recent past (Joan Robinson, Piero Sraffa, Maurice Dobb, Michal Kalecki, Paul Sweezy and Joseph Schumpeter). These are not the figures who dominated established economic traditions; they stood, rather, outside the mainstream, acting as critics of the capitalist order and of the theory that sought to explain it. More than a study of leading intellectuals, the book also investigates the principal problems and theoretical inheritance which linked together theorists of otherwise disparate social and political contexts. Students and scholars of the history of economic thought will find many interesting ideas here. It will be a fascinating source of reference for many years to come. The contributors are: Geoff Harcourt; A. K. Sen; Malcolm Sawyer; Josef Steindl; Michael Lebowitz and Tom Bottomore.

Book Routledge Revivals Agriculture in France on the Eve of the Railway Age 1980

Download or read book Routledge Revivals Agriculture in France on the Eve of the Railway Age 1980 written by Hugh Clout and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, this compact and useful book uses the earliest volumes of government-published statistics, and with the aid of computer-generated cartography, transforms the numbers there reported into an arrondissement-by-arrondissement comparative picture of French agriculture in the mid-1830s. Clout reviews problems of rapid population growth, scarcely adequate domestic food supplies and primitive systems of transportation, while attention is drawn to spatial variations in agricultural activity and productivity. Commercial, high-yielding farming was best developed in a northern multi-nuclear region, comprising of Ile-de-France, Normandy and Nord, with smaller foci of commercial orientation along an eastern axis from Alsace to Marseilles and in western areas from the Loire to the middle of the Garonne valley. Clout concludes that the revolutionary promise of national economic unity was far from being realised in the 1830s and was not to be achieved until national systems of transport and education were firmly established later in the nineteenth century.

Book Rationality and Irrationality in Economics

Download or read book Rationality and Irrationality in Economics written by Maurice Godelier and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a research project begun by the author in 1958 with the aim of answering two questions: First, what is the rationality of the economic systems that appear and disappear throughout history-in other words, what is their hidden logic and the underlying necessity for them to exist, or to have existed? Second, what are the conditions for a rational understanding of these systems-in other words, for a fully developed comparative economic science? The field of investigation opened up by these two questions is vast, touching on the foundations of social reality and on how to understand them. The author, being a Marxist, sought the answers, as he writes, 'not in philosophy or by philosophical means, but in and through examining the knowledge accumulated by the sciences.' The stages of his journey from philosophy to economics and then to anthropology are indicated by the divisions of his book. Godelier rejects, at the outset, any attempt to tackle the question of rationality or irrationality of economic science and of economic realities from the angle of an a priori idea, a speculative definition of what is rational. Such an approach can yield only, he feels, an ideological result. Rather, he treats the appearance and disappearance of social and economic systems in history as being governed by a necessity 'wholly internal to the concrete structures of social life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of this work is to be found in the cyclostyled course on 'The optimal allocation of resources in the firm and in the Nation' taught by Mr Boiteux at the Centre d'Etudes des Programmes Economiques (C. E. P. E. ), Paris from 1957 to 1960. Of course, several successive later rewritings and a great many additions have profoundly altered the initial version: starting from a remarkably clear and concise exposition of eco nomic theory, we have ended with a book that is several hundred pages long. It is not at all certain that Mr Boiteux would recognise this intellec tual sponsorship. Nor is it certain that the gain in information justifies such an increase in size. However that may be, the initial plan has survived. Without Mr Boiteux this book would never have been undertaken: it is a pleasant duty for us respectfully to acknowledge our debt to him here. Microeconomic analysis, that is to say that analysis which results from the study of the behaviour and activities of individual decision-units, was for a long time the main concern of the neo-classicists. Quite recently the introduction of macroeconomic theory, dealing with aggregate quan tities, seemed to relegate it to second place. But this is not where it belongs: we tend to agree with Mr Raymond Barre that there are "two different scales of analysis that complement rather than contrast with one another".

Book Modeling Economic Instability

Download or read book Modeling Economic Instability written by Michaël Assous and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fresh perspective on the early history of macroeconomics, by examining the macro-dynamic models developed from the late 1920s to the late 1940s, and their treatment of economic instability. It first explores the differences and similarities between the early mathematical business cycle models developed by Ragnar Frisch, Michal Kalecki, Jan Tinbergen and others, which were presented at meetings of the Econometric Society and discussed in private correspondence. By doing so, it demonstrates the diversity of models representing economic phenomena and especially economic crises and instability. Jan Tinbergen emerged as one of the most original and pivotal economists of this period, before becoming a leader of the macro-econometric movement, a role for which he is better known. His emphasis on economic policy was later mirrored in the United States in Paul Samuelson’s early work on business cycles analysis, which, drawing on Alvin Hansen, aimed at interpreting the 1937-1938 recession. The authors then show that the subsequent shift in Samuelson's approach, from the study of business cycle trajectories to the comparison of equilibrium points, provided a response to the econometricians' critique of early Keynesian models. In the early 1940s, Samuelson was able to link together the tools that had been developed by the econometricians and the economic content that was at the heart of the so-called Keynesian revolution. The problem then shifted from business cycle trajectories to the disequilibrium between economic aggregates, and the issues raised by the global stability of full employment equilibrium. This was addressed by Oskar Lange, who presented an analysis of market coordination failures, and Lawrence Klein, Samuelson's first PhD student, who pursued empirical work in this direction. The book highlights the various visions and approaches that were embedded in these macro-dynamic models, and that their originality is of interest to today's model builders as well as to students and anyone interested in how new economic ideas come to be developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s, a Pareto vogue emerged in the English-speaking world. In Italy, however, the Paretian episode was already well established, with many Italian economists investigating the relationship between economics and sociology based on Pareto's contributions. This is a study of the Paretian school and its 'fiscal sociology'.
