Book In the Grip of Minos

Download or read book In the Grip of Minos written by Matthew Senior and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following Trent, a new mode of confession makes its appearance, a baroque discourse in which "the heart speaks to the heart." Senior argues that Corneille similarly creates a new kind of hero who distinguishes himself as much by the confessional trial of self-statement as by his military exploits. In the work of Racine, Senior notes, Minos appears again, tormenting the conscience of Phedre.

Book The Layman and His Conscience

Download or read book The Layman and His Conscience written by Ronald Knox and published by . This book was released on 2024-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proper examination of conscience is surely one of the most challenging tasks of the Christian life. For the laity, charged with the work of sanctifying the world "from within as a leaven" (in the words of Lumen gentium), this task is made especially difficult by the clamorous distractions which come simply from being in the world, even if not of the world. To ease the difficulty of this task, Monsignor Knox offers in The Layman and His Conscience a retreat specifically for lay people to "remake their minds" by the power of God's good grace. Leading his retreatants (and now readers) in a spiritual "spring-cleaning," Knox throws open the windows of the soul and lets in the pure light and fresh air of the Holy Spirit to show our sins for what they are (and are not) and their causes in our bad habits and half-baked intentions, and sets down a programme of humble habits and holy intentions to keep our consciences clean and make our lives, here and now, "fit for heaven." The last of the books prepared by Knox before his death in 1957, The Layman and His Conscience is a faithful companion to his earlier work, A Retreat for Lay People. Complementing and continuing the fine lines of spiritual insight and encouragement contained there, Knox opens the ears of the sheep to know-and love-the voice of the Good Shepherd.

Download or read book Epic and Empire written by David Quint and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander the Great, according to Plutarch, carried on his campaigns a copy of the Iliad, kept alongside a dagger; on a more pronounced ideological level, ancient Romans looked to the Aeneid as an argument for imperialism. In this major reinterpretation of epic poetry beginning with Virgil, David Quint explores the political context and meanings of key works in Western literature. He divides the history of the genre into two political traditions: the Virgilian epics of conquest and empire that take the victors' side (the Aeneid itself, Camoes's Lusíadas, Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata) and the countervailing epic of the defeated and of republican liberty (Lucan's Pharsalia, Ercilla's Araucana, and d'Aubigné's Les tragiques). These traditions produce opposing ideas of historical narrative: a linear, teleological narrative that belongs to the imperial conquerors, and an episodic and open-ended narrative identified with "romance," the story told of and by the defeated. Quint situates Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained within these rival traditions. He extends his political analysis to the scholarly revival of medieval epic in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and to Sergei Eisenstein's epic film, Alexander Nevsky. Attending both to the topical contexts of individual poems and to the larger historical development of the epic genre, Epic and Empire provides new models for exploring the relationship between ideology and literary form.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Stravinsky

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Stravinsky written by Jonathan Cross and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-24 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stravinsky's work spanned the major part of the twentieth century and engaged with nearly all its principal compositional developments. This Companion reflects the breadth of Stravinsky's achievement and influence in essays by leading international scholars on a wide range of topics. It is divided into three parts dealing with the contexts within which Stravinsky worked (Russian, modernist and compositional), with his key compositions (Russian, neoclassical and serial), and with the reception of his ideas (through performance, analysis and criticism). The volume concludes with an interview with the leading Dutch composer Louis Andriessen and a major re-evaluation of 'Stravinsky and Us' by Richard Taruskin.
