Download or read book Dutch Silver written by J.W. Frederiks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume on Dutch Silver does not need a lengthy introduction, since it is a continuation of the second volume, describing and reproducing the wrought plate of the other provinces of the Netherlands, i. e. Zeeland, Utrecht, North-Brabant, Limburg, Gelderland, Overijsel, Friesland and Groningen. The province of Drenthe, until recent years a district with a poor population, has never produced important pieces of silver, but only rather insig nificant "folk art" which need not be included in this book. The general observations contained in the introduction to Volume II apply also to this volume. Here we shall add only certain particular observations regarding the most important and characteristic productions of the various provincial masters. Many of their works are well above the standard normally reached by local celebrities, and some mention of their particular skills and versatility is, therefore, called for. The silver of ZEELAND is, in general, of fine quality and neatly executed. Though this island province, lying between Holland and Belgium, had much easier communications with the Southern Netherlands than with Holland, it is evident that the influence of the latter on the Zeeland silversmiths was predominant. One of the most outstanding pieces of Dutch silver, the eight-pointed dish of 1631 made by the Middelburg silversmith and engraver Johannes Looff (no.
Download or read book The Archaeology of Home written by Katharine Greider and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Katharine Greider was told to leave her house or risk it falling down on top of her and her family, it spurred an investigation that began with contractors' diagnoses and lawsuits, then veered into archaeology and urban history, before settling into the saltwater grasses of the marsh that fatefully once sat beneath the site of Number 239 East 7th Street. During the journey, Greider examines how people balance the need for permanence with the urge to migrate, and how the home is the resting place for ancestral ghosts. The land on which Number 239 was built has a history as long as America's own. It provisioned the earliest European settlers who needed fodder for their cattle; it became a spoil of war handed from the king's servant to the revolutionary victor; it was at the heart of nineteenth-century Kleinedeutschland and of the revolutionary Jewish Lower East Side. America's immigrant waves have all passed through 7th Street. In one small house is written the history of a young country and the much longer story of humankind and the places they came to call home.

Download or read book Vermeer and His Milieu written by John Michael Montias and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not only a fascinating biography of one of the greatest painters of the seventeenth century but also a social history of the colorful extended family to which he belonged and of the town life of the period. It explores a series of distinct worlds: Delft's Small-Cattle Market, where Vermeer's paternal family settled early in the century; the milieu of shady businessmen in Amsterdam that recruited Vermeer's grandfather to counterfeit coins; the artists, military contractors, and Protestant burghers who frequented the inn of Vermeer's father in Delft's Great Market Square; and the quiet, distinguished "Papists Corner" in which Vermeer, after marrying into a high-born Catholic family, retired to practice his art, while retaining ties with wealthy Protestant patrons. The relationship of Vermeer to his principal patron is one of many original discoveries in the book.
