Book excerpt: The Dream Hanger covers the lives of three young females who each come from very different backgrounds, yet life has ironically brought them to the same place. As each character struggles to pick up the pieces of life, God’s purpose and plan for them becomes all the more real. By trashing their plans, they begin to pick up their dreams and live again. Are you who you are because of what you are? Or are you what you are because of who you are? Is a piece that deals with the lives of two young men, each thoroughly a victim of their own society. Growing up in the city streets, they each become products of what they see. Through a few bad decisions and wrong turns, they each find the path that God has for them on a road to discovering the meaning of life, friendship, and forgiveness. Runaway Home is about the life of a young girl who has the misfortune of witnessing a terrible incident as a child. This incident spiritually scars her, and causes her to have a skewed outlook on life. As time wears on, it’s through the after math of this very incident that she will find ambition, life, and love, proving yet again that everything can be used for the glory of God. Even with all of her attempts to escape her pain, God brings her back to purpose.

Download or read book Right to Rock written by Maureen Mahon and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-23 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original architects of rock ’n’ roll were black musicians including Little Richard, Etta James, and Chuck Berry. Jimi Hendrix electrified rock with his explosive guitar in the late 1960s. Yet by the 1980s, rock music produced by African Americans no longer seemed to be “authentically black.” Particularly within the music industry, the prevailing view was that no one—not black audiences, not white audiences, and not black musicians—had an interest in black rock. In 1985 New York-based black musicians and writers formed the Black Rock Coalition (brc) to challenge that notion and create outlets for black rock music. A second branch of the coalition started in Los Angeles in 1989. Under the auspices of the brc, musicians organized performances and produced recordings and radio and television shows featuring black rock. The first book to focus on the brc, Right to Rock is, like the coalition itself, about the connections between race and music, identity and authenticity, art and politics, and power and change. Maureen Mahon observed and participated in brc activities in New York and Los Angeles, and she conducted interviews with more than two dozen brc members. In Right to Rock she offers an in-depth account of how, for nearly twenty years, members of the brc have broadened understandings of black identity and black culture through rock music.

Book excerpt: "Soul Asylum has been a leading force on the alternative rock scene since the 1980s behind Dave Pirner's passionate and inspired songwriting. Beginning with his high school band, the Schitz, and then the precursor to Soul Asylum, Loud Fast Rules, Pirner's songs have run the gamut from punk rock ragers to soulful ballads, from humorous ditties to intense social commentary. Collected here, for the first time, are the complete lyrics from more than forty years of songwriting by Pirner. From Soul Asylum's early Twin/Tone releases -- Say What You Will, Made to Be Broken, While You Were Out -- through the latest, hot-off-the-presses release -- Hurry Up and Wait -- Loud Fast Words offers firsthand commentary from Pirner reflecting on every album and every song from his repertoire. He leads you through the band's early indie success and the songs that helped catapult Soul Asylum into the major-label mainstream with Hang Time, And the Horse They Rode in On, and the triple-platinum Grave Dancers Union, including the Grammy-winning "Runaway Train." Two more albums in the 1990s -- Let Your Dim Light Shine and Candy from a Stranger -- were followed by three full-length records, two live albums, and several compilations leading up to the newest 2020 release. Pirner also digs into the vault and shares his recollections of the 1986 cassette-only release, Time's Incinerator. Loud Fast Words takes you inside the mind and creative process of one of America's great songwriters. Dig into the words and meanings for more than 150 songs from this hugely popular and durable band." --
