Download or read book Lyrical and Lovely Thoughts written by J. Kirby Smith and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's not for me to say exactly how bad or good this poetry is, that of course would be pretentious. I have to say and must say, however that I feel this is at least very authentic verse. Almost all it rhymes, yet, I like to think it has a voice and attempts a kind of mellifluous flow, if you will {if you will} It's been very painful over the years, to witness insincere pseudo poetry sometimes thrive because of its author's name recognition while someone like myself with no public saliency is ignored by so called traditional publishers. Therefore, I'm giving it one shot with AuthorHouse and will, if not successful, go back to being merely a pauper, a peasant, a pawn and a poker player! In the opening poem, "The Vicissitude of the Storm," the gossamer threads represent spider webs blowing in the wind. If I've ever accidentally written a perfect poem, that would be "The Season", in this column. It's not a very long poem but the alliteration, I like to think creates an astonishingly nuanced yet bent throbbing winter romance scene. In, "A Stone in a Pond", I try to convey the sadness I feel of how a bay is often adored by people standing near it who see it through their egos. But when it becomes less amorphous, grows into something g possibly wonderful yet different then them; if is scorned for not meeting their specific expectations. I haven't written any more poetry for many many years because of becoming weary of fighting unreceptive publishers. Yet, I've read and adored many sincere poets like Poe and Kents. The movie "Bright Star" about John Kents and his love interest touched me deeply. And ii like to think, I too, have a little something to say...

Book excerpt: In the generation of singer-songwriters who came to fame in the '60s, none has created a more evocative, bittersweet, literate, and reflective body of work than Joni Mitchell. Today's music owes much to her innovation and inspiration. After displaying a haunting and sophisticated quality in such early albums as Joni Mitchell (1968) and Ladies of the Canyon (1970), Mitchell reached her poetic apotheosis in the surreal and mythical Hejira (1976) and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (1977). In more recent works like Night Ride Home (1991) and Turbulent Indigo (1994) her poetic vision continued to sharpen and grow more penetrating.Joni Mitchell: The Complete Poems and Lyrics -- including lyrics from Joni's newest album, Taming the Tiger, newly added to this paperback edition -- gives us the first opportunity to reconsider Mitchell's written work in the broad sweep of its power, honesty, and reflective beauty.

Book excerpt: THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED DEBUT BOOK OF POETRY FROM LANA DEL REY, VIOLET BENT BACKWARDS OVER THE GRASS “Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is the title poem of the book and the first poem I wrote of many. Some of which came to me in their entirety, which I dictated and then typed out, and some that I worked laboriously picking apart each word to make the perfect poem. They are eclectic and honest and not trying to be anything other than what they are and for that reason I’m proud of them, especially because the spirit in which they were written was very authentic.”—Lana Del Rey Lana’s breathtaking first book solidifies her further as “the essential writer of her times” (The Atlantic). The collection features more than thirty poems, many exclusive to the book: Never to Heaven, The Land of 1,000 Fires, Past the Bushes Cypress Thriving, LA Who Am I to Love You?, Tessa DiPietro, Happy, Paradise Is Very Fragile, Bare Feet on Linoleum, and many more. This beautiful hardcover edition showcases Lana’s typewritten manuscript pages alongside her original photography. The result is an extraordinary poetic landscape that reflects the unguarded spirit of its creator. Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is also brought to life in an unprecedented spoken word audiobook which features Lana Del Rey reading fourteen select poems from the book accompanied by music from Grammy Award-winning musician Jack Antonoff.

Download or read book Lyric Poetry by Women of the Italian Renaissance written by Virginia Cox and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bilingual, annotated edition of more than 200 poems by Italian Renaissance women, many of which have never before been published in English. Outstanding Academic Title, Choice Lyric Poetry by Women of the Italian Renaissance is the first modern anthology of verse by Italian women of this period to give a full representation of the richness and diversity of their output. Although familiar authors such as Vittoria Colonna, Gaspara Stampa, and Veronica Gambara are well represented, half of the fifty-four poets featured are unknown even to many specialists. Especially noteworthy is an extensive selection of verse from the period following 1560, which has received little or no critical attention. This later, strikingly experimental, proto-Baroque tradition of verse is reconstructed here for the first time. Virginia Cox creates both a scholarly teaching resource and a collection of poetry accessible to general readers with no previous knowledge of the Italian poetic tradition. Each poem is presented in its original language, accompanied by a translation and commentary. An introduction traces the history of Italian lyric poetry from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. Cox also provides a guide to meter, rhythm, and rhyme, as well as a glossary of rhetorical terms and a biographical dictionary of authors. Organized thematically, this book offers poems about love, religion, and politics; verse addressed to patrons, friends, family, and places; and polemical and correspondence verse. Four languages are represented: Greek, Latin, literary Tuscan of various levels of standardization, and the stylized rustic dialect of pavan. The volume contains more than 200 poems, of which about a quarter have never before been published in a modern edition and more than a third have not previously been available in English translation. "Exhaustive and insightful . . . This is an amazing book, a major achievement in the field of women's studies."—Renaissance Quarterly, reviewing Women’s Writing in Italy, 1400–1650
