Book The Charleston Orphan House

Download or read book The Charleston Orphan House written by John E. Murray and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first public orphanage in America, the Charleston Orphan House saw to the welfare and education of thousands of children from poor white families in the urban South. From wealthy benefactors to the families who sought its assistance to the artisans and merchants who relied on its charges as apprentices, the Orphan House was a critical component of the city’s social fabric. By bringing together white citizens from all levels of society, it also played a powerful political role in maintaining the prevailing social order. John E. Murray tells the story of the Charleston Orphan House for the first time through the words of those who lived there or had family members who did. Through their letters and petitions, the book follows the families from the events and decisions that led them to the Charleston Orphan House through the children’s time spent there to, in a few cases, their later adult lives. What these accounts reveal are families struggling to maintain ties after catastrophic loss and to preserve bonds with children who no longer lived under their roofs. An intimate glimpse into the lives of the white poor in early American history, The Charleston Orphan House is moreover an illuminating look at social welfare provision in the antebellum South.

Book excerpt: In the short span of 17 years, the first 17 years of his life, he was known as Peter Korytowski, Pierre Engglenger and Pierre Boivin, depending on who was hunting him at the time. Nine years old and his world had collapsed. It was 1940 and Hitler had unleashed the Blitzkrieg--bombs were exploding all around him, changing everything. This moment of terror catapulted him into an epic nine-year adventure during the Second World War. He was forced to abandon his home, his family and his childhood. Like a bad dream from which he could not awake, he began an alternate existence--that of a refugee, prey for the Nazis, part of old French nobility, a resistance participant and a rebellious orphan. But most of all, he learned how to be a survivor.

Download or read book The World of Jim Crow America 2 volumes written by Steven A. Reich and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume set is a thematically-arranged encyclopedia covering the social, political, and material culture of America during the Jim Crow Era. What was daily life really like for ordinary African American people in Jim Crow America, the hundred-year period of enforced legal segregation that began immediately after the Civil War and continued until the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965? What did they eat, wear, believe, and think? How did they raise their children? How did they interact with government? What did they value? What did they do for fun? This Daily Life encyclopedia explores the lives of average people through the examination of social, cultural, and material history. Supported by the most current research, the multivolume set examines social history topics—including family, political, religious, and economic life—as it illuminates elements of a society's emotional life, interactions, opinions, views, beliefs, intimate relationships, and connections between individuals and the greater world. It is broken up into topical sections, each dealing with a different aspect of cultural life. Each section opens with an introductory essay, followed by A–Z entries on various aspects of that topic.

Book Modern Day Slavery and Orphanage Tourism

Download or read book Modern Day Slavery and Orphanage Tourism written by Joseph M Cheer and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While appealing to the desire of tourists and volunteers to 'do good' while travelling, underlining orphanage tourism is the fact that the vast majority of children (over 80%) in orphanages and allied care institutions are not orphans. Instead, children are often placed in institutions due to poverty and hardship, and as victims of human trafficking. The first of its kind, this book highlights exploratory research that examines the links between modern slavery practices and orphanage tourism.

Download or read book The Oldest Orphan written by Tierno Monänembo and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tierno Monänembo was among the African authors invited to Rwanda after the 1994 Tutsi-Hutu massacre to ?write genocide into memory.? In his novel The Oldest Orphan, that is precisely what Monänembo does, to devastating effect. Powerful testimony to an unspeakable historical reality, this story is told by an adolescent on death row in a prison in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Dispassionately, almost cynically, the teenager Faustin tells his tale, alternating between his days in jail, his adventures wandering the countryside after his parents and most of the people of his village have been massacred, and his escapades as a cheerful hoodlum in the streets of Kigali. Only slowly does the full horror of his parents? death and his own experience return to Faustin. His realization strikes the reader with shattering force, for it carries in its wake the impossible but inescapable questions presented by such a murderous episode of history and such a crippling experience for a child, a people, and a nation.
