Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I met this book's co-authors Michael Renegar and Amy Greer in 2016, when assigned a news story about Jamestown's famous ghost named Lydia. What could be less "real news" than a ghost story? Nonetheless, I quickly validated what Michael and Amy knew all along - there is, indeed, a real-life tragedy buried within this famous tale. It just took the final puzzle piece - an ironic twist of fate - to prove it. The first few lines of this work will draw the reader into this captivating mystery and these authors' passionate 30-year research of the Lydia legend. Will giving fact to folklore spoil the story? That's up to the reader to decide. But perhaps connecting the dots, at last, in the quest for truth can bring Jamestown's famous ghost - and her loyal believers - some peace. Book The Voyage Perilous

  • Author : Susan J. Rosowski
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2001-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780803289864
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book The Voyage Perilous written by Susan J. Rosowski and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They Voyage Perilousis the first extended interpretation of Willa Cather's writing within the literary tradition of romanticism. Although she partook of the familiar subjects and themes of the Wordsworthian school of romanticism, Cather was not nearly so concerned with what we see as how we see. Her intensely individual perspective, more creatively romantic than has been previously recognized, gave her work its own kind of elegant form. ø Susan J. Rosowski argues that Willa Cather early took up the romantic challenge to vindicate imaginative thought in a world threatened by materialism, then pursued it with remarkable consistency throughout her career. The early essays and stories set out the terms of this life-long commitment. In the early novels Cather celebrates imaginative possibilities; in the middle ones she present increasingly desperate circumstances, asking what is left when the imagination is eclipsed by commercial values; in the late novels she writes in a Gothic mode, the dark counterspirit to optimistic romanticism. ø The book is organized chronologically, with a chapter devoted to each novel. The chapters can be read independently or as part of a unified argument providing a larger picture.

Book Finding Bix

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brendan Wolfe
  • Publisher : University of Iowa Press
  • Release : 2017-05-15
  • ISBN : 1609385071
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book Finding Bix written by Brendan Wolfe and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bix Beiderbecke was one of the first great legends of jazz. Among the most innovative cornet soloists of the 1920s and the first important white player, he invented the jazz ballad and pointed the way to “cool” jazz. But his recording career lasted just six years; he drank himself to death in 1931—at the age of twenty-eight. It was this meteoric rise and fall, combined with the searing originality of his playing and the mystery of his character—who was Bix? not even his friends or family seemed to know—that inspired subsequent generations to imitate him, worship him, and write about him. It also provoked Brendan Wolfe’s Finding Bix a personal and often surprising attempt to connect music, history, and legend. A native of Beiderbecke’s hometown of Davenport, Iowa, Wolfe grew up seeing Bix’s iconic portrait on everything from posters to parking garages. He never heard his music, though, until cast to play a bit part in an Italian biopic filmed in Davenport. Then, after writing a newspaper review of a book about Beiderbecke, Wolfe unexpectedly received a letter from the late musician's nephew scolding him for getting a number of facts wrong. This is where Finding Bix begins: in Wolfe's good-faith attempt to get the facts right. What follows, though, is anything but straightforward, as Wolfe discovers Bix Beiderbecke to be at the heart of furious and ever-timely disputes over addiction, race and the origins of jazz, sex, and the influence of commerce on art. He also uncovers proof that the only newspaper interview Bix gave in his lifetime was a fraud, almost entirely plagiarized from several different sources. In fact, Wolfe comes to realize that the closer he seems to get to Bix, the more the legend retreats.

Book Elizabeth Bacon Custer and the Making of a Myth

Download or read book Elizabeth Bacon Custer and the Making of a Myth written by and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georger Armstrong Custer’s death in 1876 at the Battle of the Little Big Horn left Elizabeth Bacon Custer a thirty-four-year-old widow who was deeply in debt. By the time she died fifty-seven years later she had achieved economic security, recognition as an author and lecturer, and the respect of numerous public figures. She had built the Custer legend, an idealized image of her husband as a brilliant military commander and a family man without personal failings. In Elizabeth Bacon Custer and the Making of a Myth, Shirley A. Leckie explores the life of "Libbie," a frontier army wife who willingly adhered to the social and religious restrictions of her day, yet used her authority as model wife and widow to influence events and ideology far beyond the private sphere.
