Book Gustaf Wingren and the Swedish Luther Renaissance

Download or read book Gustaf Wingren and the Swedish Luther Renaissance written by Mary Elizabeth Anderson and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swedish Luther Renaissance began at the turn of the twentieth century and flourished through three generations of theologians who brought the challenges of their own day to their study of Luther. The last of these theologians, Gustaf Wingren, saw an increasing and deadly disjunction between faith and life in the church. Reading Luther he found two lively intersections: Christian vocation and proclamation. Using the methodology of his mentors, Wingren breathed new life into the Reformer's work and developed a Lutheran theology for his place and time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking the Wittenberg Concord for Today One of the mostly forgotten gems of the sixteenth century Reformations is the Wittenberg Concord. Signed in 1536 by representatives of evangelical southern German imperial cities and territories and the Lutherans, the dialogue that led to the concord provided space for the participants to have a meaningful dialogue that led to the recognition of each other's understanding of the sacraments as orthodox. This was remarkable, given the very public failures at Marburg in 1529 and Augsburg in 1530. The lack of agreement threatened the unity of the evangelical estates and made them, along with the Reformation teachings, vulnerable to attack by the Holy Roman Empire and the Roman Catholic Church. The dialogue participants created enough space in their own understandings of the sacraments of baptism, absolution, and the Lord's Supper to allow the agreement to occur--and function reasonably well, at least until the beginning of the Thirty Years War in 1618. The final two chapters explore how this concord has impacted the church since its acceptance, and how the lessons learned from this dialogue can assist churches today in providing healthy spaces for ecumenical dialogue to discuss controversial issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the extensiveness of the resources consulted and in the depth of insight into Luther's own thought which is here revealed, Dr. Forell's work compares very favorably with anything that has been produced on the subject by European scholarship. It is the most solid and genuine piece of Luther research that has come out in this country to my knowledge." - Edgar M. Carlson, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn."The book is especially notable for its balanced judgment and objectivity. Prof. Forell attempts no whitewash, but notes Luther's personal and historical limitations at the same time as he indicates the enduringly valid principles of his ethical thought." - Warren A. Quanbeck, Luther Theological Seminary. St. Paul, Minn."This is a significant contribution toward a classification of Luther's social ethics. It convincingly refutes both of the divergent tendencies which assert 'that Luther had no social ethics at all, since he placed society outside of the Christian Gospel, or that his social ethics was purely pragmatic, accepting the social order of his day and thus helping to bring about the growth of capitalism and nationalism.'" - Martin Heinecken, The Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA"This is a book which should be in every Lutheran pastor's personal library and in every Lutheran parish library. As a matter of public relations, parochial, circuit , and district public relations committees should ensure that it finds a place on the shelves of public libraries and college and university libraries as a salutary corrective to the conventional misrepresentations of Luther's ethical principles." - Arthur Carl Piepkorn, Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis, MO.

Book The Reformation in Historical Thought

Download or read book The Reformation in Historical Thought written by Arthur Geoffrey Dickens and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By any reckoning the Reformation has proved a giant among international movements of modern times -- a catalyst for dramatic changes in intellectual life, social behavior, and material conditions. The authors examine the whole field of historical writing on this major segment of modern Western history, from its earliest struggle over the meaning of Christianity to the emergence of larger questions of human freedom, the development of objective attitudes, and research into social-religious structures. The Reformation in Historical Though will become the standard critical guide to the main developments of Reformation studies, as well as a stimulus to further research. Its vast scope and penetrating analysis will make it a classic of early modern European intellectual history. - Publisher.
