Book excerpt: Carl Strehlow’s comparative dictionary manuscript is a unique item of Australian cultural heritage; it is a large collection of circa 7,600 Aranda, 6,800 Loritja (Luritja) and 1,200 Dieri to German entries compiled at the beginning of the twentieth century at the Hermannsburg Mission in central Australia. It is an integral part of Strehlow’s ethnographic work on Aboriginal cultures that his German editor Baron Moritz von Leonhardi published as Die Aranda- und Loritja-Stämme in Zentral-Australien (Strehlow 1907–1920) in Frankfurt. Strehlow and his editor had planned to publish a language study that included this comparative dictionary, but it remained unpublished until now due to a number of complicated historical and personal circumstances of the main characters involved with the dictionary. Strehlow’s linguistic work is historically and anthropologically significant because it probably represents the largest and most comprehensive wordlist of Indigenous languages compiled in Australia during the early stages of contact. It is an important primary source for Luritja and Aranda speakers. Both languages are spoken in homes and taught in schools in central Australia. The reasons for presenting this work as a heritage dictionary—that is, as an exact transcription of the original form of the handwritten manuscript—are to follow the Western Aranda people’s wishes and to maintain its historical authenticity, which will prove to be of great use to both Indigenous people and scholars interested in language.

The book offers valuable insights as it examines in detail the policy settings that helped and hindered bilingual education in the context of minority language rights in Australia and elsewhere.

This language was once spoken along the lower Murchison River, from Kalbarri inland, and south to present-day Northampton and Geraldton, but has remained largely unknown until recent years. Nhanda is based on the author's fieldwork in Western Australia from 1993 to 1998 with one of the last speakers of the language, and also incorporates notes of early explorers and linguists who passed through the area. The grammar presents the general features of the language within the Australian context, followed by a comprehensive study of Nhanda sound patterns, major sections on nominal and verbal morphology, and descriptions of simple sentences and constituent order. Each chapter is rich in data and provides comparative evidence with important implications for historical relationships between the languages of Australia. The volume also includes Nhanda-English and English-Nhanda alphabetical vocabularies and an alphabetical list of Nhanda affixes.

However, many of these earlier names have been incorporated into contemporary nomenclature, with considerable reinterpretations of their function and form. Recently, state jurisdictions have encouraged the adoption of a greater number of Indigenous names, sometimes alongside the accepted Anglo-Australian terms, around Sydney Harbour, for example. In some cases, the use of an introduced name, such as Gove, has been contested by local Indigenous people. The 19 studies brought together in this book present an overview of current issues involving Indigenous placenames across the whole of Australia, drawing on the disciplines of geography, linguistics, history, and anthropology. They include meticulous studies of historical records, and perspectives stemming from contemporary Indigenous communities. Book excerpt: The goal of this work is to describe the changes occurring in the Pitjantjatjara speech of teenagers in Areyonga, a Central Australian community, from both a grammatical and a sociolinguistic point of view. The study is based on data collected in 1994 and 1995. At the time the data was being collected, the Areyonga community had about 200 inhabitants, more than half of them under 25 years of age. A key question of this work is the extent to which Areyonga Teenage Pitjantjatjara is being influenced by contact with English. In order to identify changes in Areyonga Teenage Pitjantjatjara, contemporary speech was compared with several independent descriptions of Traditional Pitjantjatjara (and similar neighbouring dialects). Personal observations of the author and discussions with older Pitjantjatjara people at Areyonga help to round out the picture obtained. The Areyonga population is predominantly young. Most of the older people have left the settlement to return to their community of origin. As a result, many traditional ways of living have not been transmitted fully to the following generation. However there is an undeniable striving to reintegrate traditions into the community and the teaching of the children. Consequently, there is a constant effort to educate children in their first language. What then is the state of Areyonga Teenage Pitjantjatjara? This book aims to answer this question.
