Book excerpt: Bio Sam Okello is a best-selling author. He lives in Nairobi, Kenya, with his best friend, Hellen, and their two rambunctious sons, Garrie and Prince Sam Okello Jr. Synopsis Luo Nation Rising is a response to a conversation I had with Uncle Paul Oyoyo under the cool shade of a mango tree in Yimbo Usenge. On that sizzling December afternoon, the miffed Oyoyo wanted to know why the book Luo Kitgi Gi Timbegi remained the most authoritative guide on Luo ways in spite of the passage of time-which had rendered most cultural practices irrelevant and unhelpful. But was Uncle Paul really right? Reading Luo Kitgi Gi Timbegi afresh, I was blindsided by the enormous burden Luos of the past had to endure to live in harmony with the Ruoth, Ogayi, Joyath, Jonawi, Jondagla and other crazy folks in the community . Indeed, the Luo were in a situation worse than the Israelites under the punishing Levitical Laws and Islamic women and the dominant Sharia. In this riveting, politically-incorrect volume, I go to war with cultural practices that continue to hinder the emergence of a unified Luo Nation and call on the community to go back to the path charted by Ker Paul Mboya, Ker Joel Omer, Pastor Isaac Okeyo and Jaduong Joshua Rume. The hour of Luo greatness has come!

Book The Luo People in South Sudan

Download or read book The Luo People in South Sudan written by Kon K. Madut and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work draws from several interpretations and perceptions of Lou ethnic groups regarding their kinships, lineages, and the geocultural claims pertaining to their identity and sociocultural interactions among social groups and communities. It builds on the current literature and oral history to methodologically reaffirm kinships and establish ethnic lineages. Most contemporary Luo narratives come from Kenya and Uganda, in addition to those written by Western anthropologists and missionaries. None of these narratives have changed the content of the oral stories told by Luo groups and subgroups in Africa, especially those related to their lineages, ethnic affiliations, and their path of immigration from South Sudan to Tanzania, but have, instead, confirmed the history, stories, and mythology of the greater Luo groups in Africa. This book will serve to evoke intellectual curiosity among African social scientists, prompting them to conduct more research to further understanding of Luo ethnic groups’ ways of life and social interactions, as well as their contributions to the sociopolitical and economic development in the countries and regions they inhabit.

Download or read book The Luo of Africa written by Afullo Obiero Charles and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Luo are a unique being. Its history is akin to the Israelites and the Old testament, complete with miracles like those of Nengo Jamwa, the heroes like Lwanda Magere whose power was in his shadow, and Gor Mahia, among others. The Luo migration is traceable to Egypt, with some of the Pharaos believed to have had a luo origin. Later, the history is documented clearer from Sudan, from where they migrate to the rest of Eastern (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania), Central Africa (DRC and Togo) and Western Africa (Ghana and Nigeria). They found the Babito Dynasty, replacing the then unique only dynasty in Bunyoro Kitara. Mpunga Rukidi's twin brother later founds Baganda kingdom. The Luo are a culturally strong Nilotic people wo whom a home means a home and nothing less. Even though some of them have long left the right of passage of removal of six lower teeth, it still has a lot of cultural relevance. Other cultural practises described in this book include wife inheritance, choice of leadership, among others. It is a unique nation which has produced some of the most eloquesnt and einfluential leaders such as Barrack Obama and Raila Odinga, both from Kenya. other leaders of Luo Origin are the late Garang and Milton Obote. History has it that Ruoth of Alego ascended to the kingship throne after cheating hie elder brother, ogelo at a shaving ceremony marking the end of the mandatory 3 / 4 days of mourning of one of their parents. When Ogelo was already seated ready to be shaved as the eldest son, he was called by the women who seemingly were squabbling over something. As a responsible elder, Ogelo obliged. Unknown to him, his younger brother had a secret plan to dethrown him from the mantle of leadership. On coming back, Ogelo found Ruoth already being shaved. This got him angry, and he left in a huff, even migrating to south Nyanza. However, it is said that Ogelo, like the case of Cain and Abel, was promised that whereas Ruoth had taken the home mantle from him, his position as the eldest son was secure, for he would have bigger positions than those ever to be taken by Ruoth. It is this that the presidency of Barrack Obama as the president of the United states, notably the strongest country on earth, was foretold. That Obama became president is therefore not a surprise to the Luo. Yet this is just one of the miracles foretold by the foreseers; there are many more promises yet to be fulfilled up the sleeves of the Luo . So to the world, . Watch this space.

Book Oral Literature of the Luo

Download or read book Oral Literature of the Luo written by Simon Okumba Miruka and published by East African Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sixth title in a series of titles focussing on the oral literary tradition of various East African ethnic groups - the Maasai, the Embu and the Mbeere amongst others - published by EAEP. Okumba Miruka, particularly known for his contribution to oral literature in Kenya, sets out to contexualise his subject by first explaining about the Luo people and culture - from migratory patterns and economic activity to the concept of divinity, death, warfare and Luo cuisine and eating culture. He then approaches the oral literature of the Luo through the genres of riddles, proverbs, poetry and narratives. For each genre, he offers a general introduction, notes on style, convention, performance and social function, and a wide range of samples, or 'primary texts' with commentaries.

Book Conservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage in Kenya

Download or read book Conservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage in Kenya written by Anne-Marie Deisser and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Kenya, cultural and natural heritage has a particular value. Its pre-historic heritage not only tells the story of man's origin and evolution but has also contributed to the understanding of the earth's history: fossils and artefacts spanning over 27 million years have been discovered and conserved by the National Museums of Kenya (NMK). Alongside this, the steady rise in the market value of African art has also affected Kenya. Demand for African tribal art has surpassed that for antiquities of Roman, Byzantine, and Egyptian origin, and in African countries currently experiencing conflicts, this activity invariably attracts looters, traffickers and criminal networks. This book brings together essays by heritage experts from different backgrounds, including conservation, heritage management, museum studies, archaeology, environment and social sciences, architecture and landscape, geography, philosophy and economics to explore three key themes: the underlying ethics, practices and legal issues of heritage conservation; the exploration of architectural and urban heritage of Nairobi; and the natural heritage, landscapes and sacred sites in relation to local Kenyan communities and tourism. It thus provides an overview of conservation practices in Kenya from 2000 to 2015 and highlights the role of natural and cultural heritage as a key factor of social-economic development, and as a potential instrument for conflict resolution
