Book Family or Freedom

  • Author : Emily West
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2012-11-01
  • ISBN : 0813136938
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book Family or Freedom written by Emily West and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the antebellum South, the presence of free people of color was problematic to the white population. Not only were they possible assistants to enslaved people and potential members of the labor force; their very existence undermined popular justifications for slavery. It is no surprise that, by the end of the Civil War, nine Southern states had enacted legal provisions for the "voluntary" enslavement of free blacks. What is surprising to modern sensibilities and perplexing to scholars is that some individuals did petition to rescind their freedom. Family or Freedom investigates the incentives for free African Americans living in the antebellum South to sacrifice their liberty for a life in bondage. Author Emily West looks at the many factors influencing these dire decisions -- from desperate poverty to the threat of expulsion -- and demonstrates that the desire for family unity was the most important consideration for African Americans who submitted to voluntary enslavement. The first study of its kind to examine the phenomenon throughout the South, this meticulously researched volume offers the most thorough exploration of this complex issue to date.

Book Master Lundy S Hapkido

Download or read book Master Lundy S Hapkido written by Carlton Lundy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-11-19 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carlton Lundy, a master of the Korean martial art of Hapkido, never thought he would have reached such heights. In this memoir, he recalls growing up poor in Spanish Harlem, where he held his own on the mean streets. At nineteen years old, he passed a test to join the U.S. Air Force. Within two weeks, he was a six-year enlistee in the Air Force, choosing to serve his country and pursue his education instead of chasing a career as a professional boxer. He would go on to serve three years in Minot, North Dakota, over a twenty-year period, and also spent time in New York, Montana, the Philippines, Texas, Honduras, Nevada, Panama, and elsewhere. But it was his four tours in South Korea that shaped him and where he learned Hapkido. The more he learned about South Korea, the more he was surprised. South Koreans had much in common with African Americans: They held their elders in high regard, were conservative in their dress, and had also been enslaved at one time. Join the author as he shares life lessons from the military, as a martial artist, and being a soldier of God in Master Lundys Hapkido.

Book History of the Clan Lundy Lundie Lundin

Download or read book History of the Clan Lundy Lundie Lundin written by Robert Alan Lundie Smith and published by Zeticula. This book was released on 2005 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of many of the great houses and families of Scotland are well documented in literature, and by clan associations and individuals on the Internet. The family of Lundie (Lundy, Lundin, Lundyn) is described, by Sir Robert Douglas in his Baronage, as one of the most ancient in Scotland; its history however up until now is almost un-documented. Most lists of Scottish Clans and families seem to omit this family. The few books that do include details; with one notable exception, Lundins of Fife, by G. T. Welsh; provide very little information. In fact the short paper by Welsh is the only text so far printed that was solely dedicated to this family's history. This lack of documentation of the Lundie family is quite remarkable given, as shall be discussed in full later, the fact that members of this family have occupied many high offices in Scotland; including those of Lord High Treasurer, Chancellor, Chamberlain, Hereditary Doorward (personal body guard to the King), and Member of the Council of Regents of the Kingdom. They have performed duties as hosts, ambassadors and representatives of the Sovereign; voted for Wallace as Protector of Scotland, fighting by his side in Scotland's fight for Independence; and played an important role in the reformation of the church in Scotland. Indeed many of the heads of "Great" families of Scotland, have direct descent from this house through marriage with daughters of the various branches of the Lundie family. By taking what has been written by historians so far, it has really only been through reading the histories of these other families and noting their intermarriage with Lundies, that one could form an idea of their high social standing andhistorical importance.
