Book Estimates of the Moon s Geometry Using Lunar Orbiter Imagery and Apollo Laser Altimeter Data

Download or read book Estimates of the Moon s Geometry Using Lunar Orbiter Imagery and Apollo Laser Altimeter Data written by Ruben L. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selenographic coordinates for about 6000 lunar points identified on the Lunar Orbiter photographs are tabulated and have been combined with those lunar radii derived from the Apollo 15 laser altimeter data. These coordinates were used to derive that triaxial ellipsoid which best fits the Moon's irregular surface. Fits where obtained for different constraints on both the axial orientations and the displacement of the center of the ellipsoid. The semiaxes for the unconstrained ellipsoid were a = 1737.6 km, b = 1735.6 km, and c = 1735.0 km which correspond to a mean radius of about 1736.1 km. These axes were found to be nearly parallel to the Moon's principal axes of inertia, and the origin was displaced about 2.0 km from the Moon's center of gravity in a direction away from the Earth and to the south of the lunar equator.

Book Low Energy Lunar Trajectory Design

Download or read book Low Energy Lunar Trajectory Design written by Jeffrey S. Parker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-06-25 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on years of research conducted at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Low-Energy Lunar Trajectory Design provides high-level information to mission managers and detailed information to mission designers about low-energy transfers between Earth and the moon. The book answers high-level questions about the availability and performance of such transfers in any given month and year. Low-energy lunar transfers are compared with various other types of transfers, and placed within the context of historical missions. Using this book, designers may reconstruct any transfer described therein, as well as design similar transfers with particular design parameters. An Appendix, “Locating the Lagrange Points,” and a useful list of terms and constants completes this technical reference. Surveys thousands of possible trajectories that may be used to transfer spacecraft between Earth and the moon, including transfers to lunar libration orbits, low lunar orbits, and the lunar surface Provides information about the methods, models, and tools used to design low-energy lunar transfers Includes discussion about the variations of these transfers from one month to the next, and the important operational aspects of implementing a low-energy lunar transfer Additional discussions address navigation, station-keeping, and spacecraft systems issues

Download or read book Physics and Chemistry of the Solar System written by John S. Lewis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at several distinct audiences: first, the upper division science major who wants an up-to-date appreciation of the present state of the planetary sciences for 'cultural' purposes; second, the first-year graduate student from any of several undergraduate disciplines who intends to take graduate courses in specialized areas of planetary sciences; and third, the practicing Ph. D. scientist with training in physics, chemistry, geology, astronomy, meteorology, biology, etc., who has a highly specialized knowledge of some portion of this material, but has not had the opportunity to study the broad context within which that specialty might be applied to current problems in this field.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance man " ... discovered many a mechanical marvel .... The achievement of the astronauts '" opened up comparable prospects to the men of today, but of infinitely wider scope". C. LUCET, French Ambassador to the United States.· "Any future ... must inevitably pass through the channel of combined disciplines ... (from which) will arise a humanization of state-of-the-art technology, and updating of methods of Earth Science." Author unknown.·· "It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and reality tomorrow." ROBERT GODDARD, American physicist. This'phrase has become the symbol of NASA . • Is there a crisis of the spirit?, Bu/. Soc. Prof. Fr. en Amer. (1969) p. 9. *. La recherchespatiale [Space Research] (May 1969) p. 15. INTRODUCTION FROM GALILEO TO ALDRIN AND ARMSTRONG In 1610, Galileo observed the surface of the Moon through the lens which bears his name and announced that, contrary to official opinion, its surface was irregular and not smooth. We now know that this observation -and many others ofGalileo-was a correct one, but the opposition that always arises against research too far ahead of its time resulted in his condemnation.
