This five-chapter focuses on the questions of analysis and representation of such operators and illustrates the results of these analyses by obtaining some of the limitations that are imposed on the performance of passive systems. The first two chapters deal with the structure of general linear passive operators. These chapters specifically look into the theory of distributions, called generalized functions. The third and fourth chapters illustrate the application of passive operator theory to rational (lumped) and irrational (distributed) systems. The fifth chapter discusses some applications of optimization theory to the study of networks.

It is shown that the scattering matrix, W(p, s), of such a structure is two-variable bounded-real. A complete synthesis technique is evolved for purely reactive networks by introducing the concept of a minimal realization. Moreover, it is demonstrated that such lossless networks may be constructed with the absolute minimum number of lumped reactances and lines. Several theorems are also presented delineating the fine structure of nonminimal realizations and two examples serve to illustrate the basic synthesis approach. (Author).

Recently this topic has received renewed attention and has been a focus of considerable research. This is because the transmisson line theory has found new and important applications in the area of high-speed VLSI interconnects, while it has retained its significance in the area of power transmission. In many applications, transmission lines are connected to nonlinear circuits. For instance, interconnects of high-speed VLSI chips can be modelled as transmission lines loaded with nonlinear elements. These nonlinearities may lead to many new effects such as instability, chaos, generation of higher order harmonics, etc. The mathematical models of transmission lines with nonlinear loads consist of the linear partial differential equations describing the current and voltage dynamics along the lines together with the nonlinear boundary conditions imposed by the nonlinear loads connected to the lines. These nonlinear boundary conditions make the mathematical treatment very difficult. For this reason, the analysis of transmission lines with nonlinear loads has not been addressed adequately in the existing literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many engineering systems which cannot be reasonably modeled by lumped elements, but must be modeled by distributed elements. This is especially true in electrical networks at high frequencies and in integrated circuits. Herein are discussed some computer optimization methods for the design of lumped-distributed networks in which the parameters of the network are adjusted until certain engineering requirements are met. An efficient way to adjust the parameters is to utilize the gradient of the performance index. Two different algorithms are developed to generate the gradient of the performance index with respect to the adjustable parameters. The first method assumes that the network has a cascaded structure, and the gradient is obtained by calculus of variation techniques. The second method which proved to be more efficient is the adjoint network method. The adjoint network method developed previously, using Tellegen's Theorem, for lumped-active networks in branch formulation is extended to distributed-lumped-active networks. For this, the port parameter formulation is used. These methods are applied to several practical examples. The first examples are on the design of UHF broad-band amplifiers with both real and complex loads (a slot antenna). The third example is the low noise matching of a slot antenna to a transistor amplifier. The last example is a design of a low-pass distributed-lumped-active filter. Some of the designs have been built and the measurements show close agreement with the calculated results. A survey of stability criteria which were used in the designs is included. (Author).
