Book Lumberjack

Download or read book Lumberjack written by William S. Crowe and published by Loving Healing Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner--Best Biography/Memoir of 2002, Midwest Book Awards (St. Paul, MN) A firsthand account of the lumbering era during the white pine boom years of the late 1800s - early 1900s in the northern U.S. Millions of board feet of logs were cut in deep woods camps, driven down the rivers to the sawmills and shipped by schooner and barge to build a nation. This 70th Anniversary Edition of the original book has been redesigned and expanded, with 78 historic photographs and illustrations, glossary, editors' notes, maps and much more. "The lumber barons, the lumberjacks, and the town people who worked in the mills-as well as the happenings of that period... are recalled by one who lived among them. I hope it will be an inspiration to others to set down their memories of the days of falling pine and belt-driven sawmills. Already too much of this story has passed beyond recall... a valuable addition not only to the history of Manistique, but to the state as well." --Ferris E. Lewis, Michigan History, Lansing "An authentic first-hand account... which tells the whole story of big-scale lumbering during the 1890s and early 1900s. Chapter by enthralling chapter, Crowe recounts the times involved in the 'big pine' operations... it rivals anything so far written... rich in description and alive with thrilling episodes." --Marquette Mining Journal "First-hand accounts of the dramatic 'big cut' by participant-observers are always illuminating. William S. Crowe's reminiscence of his years in the woods and the early days of Manistique, at the north end of Lake Michigan in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, was a classic in the 1950s. His granddaughters Lynn McGlothin Emerick and Ann McGlothin Weller have done a real service by republishing his book with ample photos and notes." -- Mary Hoffman Hunt, Midwestern Guides "Focusing on Manistique and meticulously researched, Lumberjack explores the early days of logging and the lifestyles of the countless loggers that filled the woods in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. William Crowe, the author, was a logger himself who collected and relates real stories from the men who were there. This is a mandatory book for anyone interested in the history of the Upper Peninsula. --Mikel B. Classen, author - Historian, True Tales: The Forgotten History of the U.P. and Faces Places & Days Gone By: A Pictorial History of the U.P. From Modern History Press www.ModernHistoryPress.com

Book excerpt: Short-listed for the 1978 Governor General’s Award for Non-Fiction The 19th century spawned a unique breed of men who took pride in their woodsmen skills and rough codes of conduct. They called themselves lumberers, shantymen, timber beasts, les bucherons – and, more recently, lumberjacks, working in the vast forests of eastern Canada and British Columbia. Across the country, farm boys would go to the woods, lumbering being the only winter work available. Immigrants – Swedes and Finns more often than not – resumed the trades they had learned so well in the forests of northern Europe. They broke the cold, hard monotony of camp life with songs, tall tales and card games. Within these pages, author Donald MacKay allows us a glimpse into that moment in our heritage when men entered the virgin forest to carve out an industry from the seemingly endless array of pine, spruce, maple and balsam fir found there.

Download or read book Bloodstoppers Bearwalkers written by Richard Mercer Dorson and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote and rugged, Michigan's Upper Peninsula (fondly known as "the U.P.") has been home to a rich variety of indigenous peoples and Old World immigrants--a heritage deeply embedded in today's "Yooper" culture. Ojibwes, French Canadians, Finns, Cornish, Poles, Italians, Slovenians, and others have all lived here, attracted to the area by its timber, mineral ore, and fishing grounds. Mixing local happenings with supernatural tales and creatively adapting traditional stories to suit changing audiences, the diverse inhabitants of the U.P. have created a wealth of lore populated with tricksters, outlaws, cunning trappers and poachers, eccentric bosses of the mines and lumber camps, "bloodstoppers" gifted with the lifesaving power to stop the flow of blood, "bearwalkers" able to assume the shape of bears, and more. For folklorist Richard M. Dorson, who ventured into the region in the late 1940s, the U.P. was a living laboratory, a storyteller's paradise. Bloodstoppers and Bearwalkers, based on his extensive fieldwork in the area, is his richest and most enduring work. This new edition, with a critical introduction and an appendix of additional tales selected by James P. Leary, restores and expands Dorson's classic contribution to American folklore. Engaging and well informed, the book presents and ponders the folk narratives of the region's loggers, miners, lake sailors, trappers, and townsfolk. Unfolding the variously peculiar and raucous tales of the U.P., Bloodstoppers and Bearwalkers reveals a vital component of Upper Midwest culture and a fascinating cross-section of American society.

Download or read book Most Ethical Company written by Kenneth Johnson and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the trials and troubles of a half-breed Alaskan Native standing up for what is right and being tempted and threatened by powerful men in charge of a pipeline owned by several oil companies that won a title as Most Ethical Company in the USA. This book tells one story of many about the fears and trials of one man who prayed and trusted Lord God to help the Alaskan Natives trying to work on the pipeline and the Alaskan Natives who received jobs. This book also tells how Lord God helped them. It mentions organizations directly involved with the pipeline and how they helped. This book tells some of the threats, scare tactics, and the ways they treated Alaskan Natives during his stay with Alyeska Pipeline. This book is a long time coming because the author was worried for his family. He does see how this might help other Native organizations and tribes across the USA and the world deal with these powerful companies. This book also shows some of the good that came about because a few people who had courage and trust in Lord God came forward and spoke out for what is right. The author has seen the 20 percent Alaskan Native hire in effect and smiles when he sees the Native people with jobs on the pipeline and the other companies. He also smiles when he sees his youngest son with a full engineering scholarship through ANSEP and his daughter doing wonderful work with First Alaskans Institute. The author’s oldest son will be retiring from the Navy soon, and Alaska will be a better place when he comes back. He can see how their books in the future will be much more rewarding than this. Thank you, Lord God!
